Yma Sumac, The Peruvian Songbird, sings "Chuncho."

- In a piece of classic exotica, the unique Yma Sumac (1922-2008) displays her most unusual voice. I, like many, have mixed feelings about Sumac (whose name, in Quechua, means 'How beautiful!") Some feel there was a potentially great operatic voice here, had it been trained as such. However, the decision was made to frame her performance as essentially a presentation of exotica. To a certain extent, Ivan Rebroff made the same decision.
One cannot gainsay the past, but there is ample evidence of an extraordinary voice here, that much is certain.
This is way beyond singing. So primal. Pure. . . It's like she is communicating with the forest and the creatures in their tones/language. . . Just Exquisite. . .
thats what i was gonna say!!
She is reported to have sung the highest and lowest of her range in this one song. Impressive and unique. What an honor to finally hear her voice.
In one moment i was thinking its some flute playing, but it was her voice, unbelievable.
It's true..
It wasn’t uncommon actually is a type of clicking language some peoples still know of today
My mom used to play this "record" when we were kids when there was a thunder and lightening storm. Scared the heck out of us. What a good memory!
***Magic***
Your mom is cool. I'm totally going to do this now. I need to move some place where we have more thunder storms.
where are u from?

You must be so proud of her, your mom has an awesome taste in music 👌🏼
I always cry when I listen to her, it, s like listening to Mother Earth
interesting comment!
My mom passed away 12 years ago and she had told me about this extraordinary singer as long as I can remember my childhood, she precisely told me about the fact she was able to emulate the birds' voices, now I'm 60 and I stumbled upon yma sumac for pure case on Facebook and on UA-cam, thank you mama ❤️
Stunned. I'm seriously having symptoms of shock right now. I cannot believe what I just heard. Why has this woman not come into my life until today? I don't even know what to say, which is unusual for me. Wow! Just wow!
Have you ever heard Arabic songs?
@@sal96ali I just discovered Umm Kulthum about a year ago! Wow! I wasn't sure if I was listening to a human at first. Very preternatural and ethereal!
Lol same here
@@mysticmerman Listen to Asmahan.
@@gerardsatamian Yeah, she's great! I wasn't too impressed by the first song. Then, I listened to "Ya Toyour" which shows her range and style well. I'll have to listen to more.
I first heard her when I was 9, in 1959. My aunts had bought a recording of hers, a 33 1/3 LP. My mother herself had a 5 octave range and her sisters were singers and instrumentalists too. I was blown away as I was listen and they pointed out that every note I heard, every growl, every chirp, every bird sound, every trill, was produced by Yma Sumac.
I can never forget that day, nor can I forget her magnificent voice. A true vocal phenomenon. She said that she had learned how to sing by imitating the birds and animals she heard, growing up in the Amazon. She was truly a unique singer and there has been no one like her. In vocal range there WAS Ewa Podles, a Hungarian opera singer with a huge vocal range of 9 octaves and currently, of course, the young male singer from Khazakstan, Dimash Kudaibergen (Dimash), who has a mind-boggling 8-octave range. He has been fondly called The Male Yma Sumac. Most of his fans do not know who she is, but us older ones, do!
Ewa Podles is not Hungarian for God's sake. She is 100% Polish.
@@magdam8290 thanks for correcting me. It was 2.00 a.m. in the morning and my memory slipped away from me. Having said that, is there any need to be so indignant? It was an honest slip. But thanks anyway.
Check please the young Russian girl singer, the phenomenal Diana Ankudinova. I came here to try to compare her voice with Yma's.
I also heard Yma from an old record my grandmother had. I listened in early 60's many times to that record facinated by her perfect voice. Sure wish I had that record now but one of her sons tossed it in the garbage. Sigh. I am now a Dear and I think of Yma often when listening to Dimash. She was treated with much disrespect during her stay in the USA but I am sure Dimash would have been honoured and excited to meet her if she had lived in a more modern time. Thank you for your comment.🥰Canadian Dear🇨🇦
@@magdam8290¡And not "9" octaves! 😂
Bueno, tmbn me gusta whitney, celine. esos llamads artistas DE HOY EN DIA no me gustan, no saben nada d musica, SAVE THE MUSICCCCCC
Her range is undoubtedly impressive. What she has that many singers don't is incredible power, tone and texture. She also has unbelievable control. I wouldn't doubt that she's the greatest singer who has ever lived.
OMGGGGGGGGGG, she was a LINVING INCA PRINCESS :-o, those sounds are supernatural
Possibly the most extraordinary female voice of all time. 5 octaves!
I thought there was a part that was a horse neighing and then realized it was her!
Brings back memories from my youth. We had this recording
Nowadays we have Dimash with I think 7 octaves, and he is even male. They call him the best younger singer on the planet. Try listen his "S.O.S. d'un terrien en détresse".
They have register 8
Eight octaves
Yma Sumac was definitely a unique talent and personality. Chuncho remains her most unusual work. It's for sure not easy listening. I find it hauntingly beautiful and a marvel of unique vocal ability and skill.
I always thought it was funny she's often put under 'easy listening'. Like, nothing easy about it!
I really wish she had recorded more things like this. I don't think Hollywood really knew what to do with her. Truly unbelievable!
I grew up listening to her ... my parents LOVED her and passed on the love of her music to my siblings and I.

Yma Sumac just blows my mind!! I had no idea this video existed
My father had a set of 45’s of her that I played over and over as a child. I loved her exotic voice and beauty. There is no other voice I have heard as unique as hers and able to achieve the different sounds and ranges. Why be like others when we can have something rare and beautiful. Hers was most definitely a unique God given gift.
Hi! My name is Julia. I am a high school/college student from Chicago in the United States. Peru fascinates me. I would be so grateful to speak with someone from and living in the country to learn about the food, culture, & ways of daily life. We would practice English as well. Thank you.
The food and Culture in Peru is so interesting. There's so much to know from each its regions. Greetings from Peru :)
I from Perú I study languages can I help you ? You may contac me greetings from Chiclayo - Perú .
My Grandfather Jesus Revollar played guitar for her in Lima, Peru. He was also her photographer, my mom and aunts still have a lot of the original photos he took.
Wow
Su voz no parece de este mundo. Que increíble!!
The most artistic.. Creative.. All in one voice.. 2 voice or even 3 voices in one syllable... I've never heard anything like it. .it's mindboggling
I wish I was exposed to this vocalist's music during my training. I never knew a human being was capable of singing like THIS.
I love her.
Apparently, she used a lot of whistles. It is a bit different from how you usually making sounds.
She could sing in a double voice as well.
She could sing like that because she was in higher elevation in Peru she can sing much higher than anyone pitch that is no pun intended
Mr. E 603 higher elevation causes higher pitch?
I agree. This is a remarkable voice, with perfect control and intonation. Notice she uses her chest voice, too, and still has the pure tones of a real soprano. Her throat muscles are toned; there is no wobble or unnecessary vibrato. The voice is consistent from top to bottom. Today's choir teachers might have put her in the "alto" section, as a Mezzo-Soprano, which is often a big mistake. Yma Sumac uses all her range as one instrument. It shows outstanding development and years of practice without throat tension.
We are fortunate that this video survived. I'm glad her voice was unspoiled by trying to conform to western opera. Brave and bold spirit.
Superhuman abilities and playfulness of the voice...stunning! Im adding this piece to my morning routine ,just play and experiment with the voice it is so liberating ...then i find my self expression just flowing so naturally
I discovered this woman when I was 12-13, and was totally mezmerized by her ability and the exotic music. That was 60+ years ago and I still love her voice. Few have matched it.
Well what the heck did I just watch? I am so glad those record execs and artistic directors back in the day took a chance and unleashed this crazy and unique beauty and talent into the world. What exactly is this? Singing? Caterwauling? Wailing? All of the above? Who cares, she sounded amazing. Hugs!
She was truly divine! No other voice like hers on earth!
She was an absolute master. Wow.
So much love and respect ❤️

Sure, she could have done opera.
But most opera singers would not have been able to do what she did. Rather than training her for more "respectable" music, it's better, I think to respect her rare and powerful talent.
She couldn't make opera because the ultra-racism from opera impresarios in Italy and jealousy between prima donna opera singers
AGREED! 100% and then some!!
And she would not have made it in the US in the 50s for the same reason Marion Anderson was not allowed to sing in Constitution Hall in the '50s: skin color. But she had a phenomenal voice, regardless of what she sang. Why people think that singing opera is the highest form of singing is a rather elitist attitude. To have a glorious voice is a gift. I love Leontyne Price, but she couldn't sing pop music to save her life, nor could most opera singers. The would make "Respect" by Aretha sound like really, really, awful. Aretha, however, could sing opera decently. So, what's better: to only be able to sing ONE way or to enchant people by singing pop, opera, and international?? I'll go for the latter.
Aretha cant even come close to deliver what a simple aria demands lol. where u got that from? Maybe in her head she can sing opera
mcbrion1951 No, Aretha wouldn't have been able to sing opera other than mimicking certain aspects of it respectably.
The thing is, there's nothing inherently better about opera than say, pop - but singers of the former always train their voices to their full capacities. Pop simply doesn't demand it so singers often neglect their potential and damage themselves. It doesn't mean that pop singers have less innate ability.
Whatever whoever thinks does not matter anymore, too late..
She really served alien elegance in her voice that is from somewhere beautiful in this galaxy
