@@gabe_s_videos Revelation 2:9 KJV I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
While I had Jewish friends growing up, as a Christian child, this special really is what introduced me to Judaism and the story of Hanukkah. I haven't watched it in years, but I have very fond memories of watching it as a kid. Also, the whole "I broke a 'shin' because of you!" line cracks me up to this day. I didn't get why it was funny when I was a kid, but now that I'm older, it's hilarious. :)
Anyone else feel bad for the other old man that was clashing with Boris? I was too young to grasp what he was saying then but now I realize he basically admitted he was jealous of Boris's family because he never had kids and now continuously regrets it in his old age. Man I forgot how deep this show could get.
Exactly. As a kid, you miss that level, but that is sort of the moral of the story for the adults - Boris envied Shlomo's business, and Shlomo envied Boris's family, and both assumed the other had a better life. Also, I appreciate the fact that they imply that Shlomo's "fancy pants business" is in fact a business that makes fancy pants.
My all time favourite Rugrats special, it was how I got know about Hanukkah and Jewish religion in the first place. Every time the Rugrats all referred Shlomo as “The Meanie of Hanukkah” gets me every time 😄 but it turns out Shlomo wasn’t actually “The Meanie of Hanukkah” after all, he was just playing the evil Greek king Antiochus for the Hanukkah play with Boris and the two had a long time rivalry. My favourite parts of the Rugrats Hanukkah special was when the Rugrats were doing the story of Hanukkah in their imagination and the ending where both Shlomo and Boris finished the reading the Hanukkah storybook to the Rugrats backstage and putting their differences aside by singing a Hebrew song together as reformed friends to the audience, that was a such a heartwarming moment ❤️
Rugrats did such a great job at exploring different holidays. Also great was the kwanza special. They did such a great job at exploring the holidays and explaining them to children in a way that isn’t necessarily dumbed down but rather in a way that if in class teachers asked if they knew what Hanukkah or kwanza was kids had a frame of reference.
I came back to this years later expecting to be able to riff over it and have a few laughs, but this is genuinely a good, simplified telling of the story and meaning behind the holiday, especially for all the kids growing up who probably had no idea what Judaism was.
This certainly was a breakthrough in network television, back then tv shows doing other holidays besides Christmas and Easter was something that was unheard of.
It was more like: "Those candles aren't for Tommy's birthday! They're for... (hacking) CHHANUKAH!" "Harmonica?" "CHANUKAH! You have to (hack) when you say it!"
Mine too. Even though I was born Christian, I still have a major respect for Jewish culture and religion, and I don’t think I ever would’ve if I never grew up with this show.
@kimlechman5856 🙂 same here. I'm Catholic, and my intro to Judaism was through Rugrats and Hey Arnold. I wouldn't haven't known about it if it weren't for them.
This is beautiful. Exodus is one of the great stories of humanity. Sadly, we enlightened, modern people have decided to conpletely disregard the stories that built us because talking about God is scary.
The one thing about this episode that mislead me was the way they sang that Oh Hanukkah song. I grew up thinking it was supposed to be a somber and haunting dirge when in reality it's a cheerful party song :p
This was actually the first new episode after the original 65 was made. When I first watched it, I was quite shocked at some of the voices sounding different especially, Tommy and Didi. Tommy now sounded more Babyish, and Didi now sounded too nice. I thought the voice actors changed, but no, they were still the same ones (E.G. Daily and Melanie Chartoff respectively).
They cut out the part where Phil pretends to be a ghost to try to scare the meanie of Hanukkah but ends up walking into a table 🤣 I remember watching and laughing so hard when you see Phil be like, "OooOoooO 👻" and then BAM, he walks into the table 🤣
It's faith, not religion. Because of this feeling it is proof to show that regardless of who we are, or what we are, we are all the same in the end. We are brothers and we are sisters.
well tbf if you're Christian or Muslim, Maccabees Revolt was a huge part of what defines Early Christianity. It was the violent side of something that had been going on for a centuries: The mixture of Jewish and Greek theology, philosophy, and ideas in general.
😃 Its a great episode! I'm catholic and I love these episodes. Rugrats and Hey Arnold introduced me to these holidays and religious practices as a kid. It was pretty cool 😁
The animation is pretty different here compared to previous and subsequent episodes, with a darker mood akin to Klasky-Csupo's other Nicktoon of the time, "AAAHH! Real Monsters." Probably because this was the first new "Rugrats" episode since the original 65 episodes.
MegaMr46 Actually technically Hebrew is a LANGUAGE, not a people (anymore). It was confirmed in the Passover special that Boris is actually RUSSIAN and Minka is from what is now known as Lithuania.
