I can barely be bothered to keep up with it every few years, so I can understand Frieren's pain on this one. Dealing with bureaucracy every other week would suck.
They hinted at it here and they'll touch on it later, but Kraft the Elf Monk is among the most ancient beings in the world, when he says everyone who's heard of his righteous deeds have died, he's foreshadowing Frieren's future. She's famous now, but eventually her deeds will fade into legend, and eventually even that legend will stop being told, until she fades from living memory. That's why he asks Frieren what she's done in her life, and it's why when she says she helped beat the demon king, he responds with "What else?"
I've seen through episode 18 at this point, and Kraft reappearing as a statue was especially striking after this sort of humble, not very deep introduction into his character. Thinking on it later, I wonder if the abruptness and lack of focus on their time together was a deliberate set up for that exact thing.
For an elf to call another elf young is enough to say how old Kraft is, and Frieren is Mage that has lived for at least 1000 years. My brain can't comprehend how much older Kraft can be
My favorite thing about this episode is the one-on-one conversation between Frieren and Kraft. Specifically two things. Firstly, as a religious person, the ready generosity in his kindness and consolation to Frieren. "I'll praise you [since if you don't believe]," and "you will see him again." Second, the framing and positioning: it starts with them facing each other (oppositional) and furthest apart as she's contesting with his beliefs and as the scene continues the camera rotates and she turns until they're overlapping and she's turned 90 degrees to him (not opposing but not the same direction) as she says "Heiter is in Heaven now." Beautiful stuff. I love this show.
I guess not having people remember you or your legacy is a concern of extra importance if you're nearly immortal, since any people you get close to that aren't immortal will be gone in no time from your perspective, you're left with your accomplishments, but even those are not immune to being erased by time, so ultimately you're left with the belief that some higher power will remember all of your accomplishments and good deeds at the end of your life. I think this is what Kraft has experienced, having lived for so much longer than Frieren, and why he gave her that advice. Also I like how Kraft is clearly more emotionally and socially developed compared to Frieren, probably again owing to his age, he behaves in a much more "human" fashion than Frieren.
For whatever reason, the ending of this episode always tugs at my heartstrings hard. Something about the way they say goodbye. It's this beautiful, happy kind of bittersweet.
9:42 Based on the last episode, it does seem like the Demon King was making a concentrated effort to exterminate the Elves for at least a thousand years-probably because elves are the most likely to amass enough personal power to beat him within their lifetime. It seems that previously, elves were doing just fine, in spite of their lack of reproductive instincts, by forming deep platonic bonds and simply choosing to have children. Now that they’ve been driven to the brink of extinction, though, they’re struggling to bounce back.
17:13 yeah she’s still grieving and feeling regret for nor appreciating them more and staying connected. But yeah with their time frame saying see you next century is like the equivalent of saying see you next year
Re weird certification moments: I don’t have a university degree because I took the classes out of order, so the 1st in the series didn’t count towards my requirements. I already had a job lined up, so I couldn’t be bothered to take the alternative course I needed, and I just… didn’t. 🤷
@14:46 Kraft's religious devotion is not about preaching heaven as a magical place where all the good times is, kraft is arguing about religion as a remembrance like how we keep photos to remember the good times. He already lived the good life but nobody remembers it, so his coping mechanism to this thought is heaven. I think you got it confused with your own opinion about religion but that's okay.
I think Kraft is much older than Frieren? Maybe? He called her young and she does look much younger So maybe Kraft has been around since pre historic times
It's a common misconception that pandas are bad at reproducing and are slowly dying out. This isn't really true. Wild pandas reproduce just fine, and the panda species in general hasn't been endangered since 2021 (though they are still considered at risk due to constant human expansion into their habitat). Captive pandas are the ones who have an impossibly hard time to reproduce because most captive animals have an impossibly hard time to reproduce. The stressful social environment of a zoo or whatever just isn't conducive to reproduction for animals.
Holy shit so I'm watching this show dubbed I did not expected Kraft to be voiced by the guy who does Dio Brando from JoJos, Zato-1 from Guilty Gear, etc 😂 he's usually a very type casted actor I feel like but Kraft isn't like what he usually plays at all. Takehito Koyasu is the goat tho
I'm not religious at all, but I've gotten more and more spiritual as I've grown up. It's pretty interesting how those are separate. but that only makes sense, after all, religion had to be invented at some point, but spiritual beliefs have probably been around since cavemen days. especially in western culture where Christianity is 'hyped up' as it were as 'the' religion, even though its barely been around that long at all compared to like.. every other religion, lol.
I'm a little miffed you were expecting something romantic to happen with Kraft and Frieren. We were already told by Frieren that as a species elves are aroace, and as the only other elf we've seen Kraft does seem to support that since his interest in Frieren only went as far as "huh, surprised to see another elf". Even if other elves *were* interested in romance or sex Frieren herself isn't, so it feels rude to expect her to get into a relationship just because he seems to be the only male elf left. If Frieren was interested in making sure the elven species continues then maybe I could see a reason, but she doesn't seem to care if she *were* the last elf to exist.
Totally unrelated to Frieren but do you think you will start watching My Hero Academia Season 7 weekly? The first episode just came out a couple days ago and it was amazing! I particularly enjoy your My Hero reactions
@@AGoodwinTV Gotcha... I forgot the dub came out a week late. I love watching the sub a week early and than rewatching the episode on your patreon but in the english (One of the rare dubs I actually like)
It annoys me that this is called an "Era of peace" when the north is still clearly tormented by demon armies. Where are the first-class mages when it comes to dealing with Aura?
I mean, it WAS an era of peace. Aura rose back to power 30 years ago (basically when Himmel died), so it was a good 50 years of peace. If you watch the full season it's almost implied that most powerful mages are not alive anymore and the ones that are have other motivations.
17:31 I mean, does it really matter if elves go extinct? furthermore, they don't really need to date to reproduce lol. afterall, most pregnancies aren't intertwined with an ongoing relationship, at the very least not by the time the child is a couple years old. but even so, if elves do go extinct, it's not like it matters, yakno? neither of them are clearly interested in romantic or sexual relationships, nor in raising children (though, Frieren, with Stark and Fern, has been forced to do that anyway, lol..). if elves choose to quietly go extinct of their own volition, I feel like there's no harm in that. like, say the next generation of humans decided that they all no longer had interest in breeding, and so the next generation; generation alpha (the one after Z) were the last generation on earth. that's their choice to make. like, it's not like going extinct is a bad thing. it's bad when animals are going extinct because we (humans) are forcing that upon them, but an extinction of your own species that you, a member of your species is fine with? seems like a pretty peaceful way to leave the world. atleast, that's my perspective.
I pray Goodwin that you will come to know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. I pray he will forgive you and bring you into his family, into eternal life. I hope the barriers you have in the way of coming to the one true faith are broken down. Read the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John and decide for yourself. Love you chief, I wish for nothing but your eternal wellbeing. Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." - John 14:6
"There's not even any trees."
Way to attack a guy for being good at his job.
being an elf and having their sense of time must be so annoying in the modern world, imagine having your driver's license expire every week
