It was likely an accident.. Somewhere i read ,There was other hellicopters too in the team , from IRAN , and all other also faced problems with weather and bad visibility. As you can see in the video , even during day visibility is poor.. The other hellicopters returned to the base , but that one failed. If it was a terror attack , IRAN will have known because radio communications would have tipped all other choppers of problems and call IRANIAN government waiting for its president . Unless of course it was a bomb inside or a sabotage on their chopper while it was on the ground by a mechanic. Either way apparently there was other choppers escorting the President. Had any attack happened ,they would have known.

If the US presidential helicopter or plane crashed, their transponder would also be off too. Presidential aircrafts NEVER have their transponders on, they don't want people to track their exact location in flight.

I don't understand why they put the president in an old American helicopter without even a legally required functioning transponder to fly over rugged mountainous terrain in threatening weather, terrain which is extremely perilous for helicopters even in the best of times! Why wasn't he going by plane? Was there no takeoff and landing fields there? Or else by land. Was there no direct road?

Simply put. No. that is normal to have all beacons turned off for security purposes. It is easy to point fingers but that was clearly pilot error. Flying too low and not reading his instruments and maps.

Strange how 'blind spots' work, not only on individuals, but countries. They could have easily replaced those choppers with updated ones from Turkey or Russia, but still preferred to tinker with them and keep them going. It was a Mossad operation. The aircraft was hit via a missile. Otherwise, it will not blast apart the way it did if it was a crash. And usually, due to the softer landings of helicopters, there always comes out someone who remains alive or injured severely. In this incident, the entire cabin was killed and that shows that the pilot lost control after the missile hit and it got sent down. There is a large Mossad intelligence post in Azerbaijan and America gave the direct location of the helicopter to the exact detail. This was not a crash at all and forensic evidence of the crash site is an obvious giveaway that it has been hit.

The transponder plays no active part in controlling an aircraft. Rather, it does record systems failures even when not switched on and it is practically indestructible.

The revelation is not stunning. Misinformation. The transponder has nothing to do with the navigational ability of the aircraft or crew. It is merely a device that transmits a signal so the aircraft could be tracked on radar. True it is a requirement in any aircraft. This could have been damaged in the accident or it could have been turned of because of the fact that they would not want the presidents aircraft to be tracked for security reasons. Every aircraft is fitted with an ELT (Emergency Locator Transmitter) which transmits a signal on a specific emergency channel, which should activate on impact. Why not use that when searching for the aircraft? So, sorry, not much in this information except getting people worked up with the wrong information. Blame the pilots. To put blame on the US because Iran have difficulty in obtaining spare parts is also absurd. So they are prepared to fly their president in a poorly maintained aircraft? Nonsense.

I might be missing something, but if 2 other choppers were part of the convoy, and they reached their destination safely, how on earth did they not notice the other chopper's disappearance, despite the bad weather and despite the bad weather, or did they all switch of everything for safety concerns?. Surely they had some connection with each other as all aircraft has and would know if one disappears. Won't they? Yet, it took a day to find the chopper that went down.

A transponder is not required for safe flight. It also known as secondary radar. Google it!.
A more likely scenario could be that the altimeter was set incorrectly or malfunctioned. That tells the pilot his altitude. If he knows the highest terrain on his way back then he could avoid crashing into a mountain. Barometric pressure most likely not available at the point of departure. Airports have it.
But the most important rule of operating helicopters is always to do a VFR flight, especially in rugged terrain. Never in FOG! Unbelievable carelessness or incompetence.
And 40 years or more is not a problem for any aircraft if properly maintained. From an old but not bold 6000 hour Chopper Pilot.

This is normal. In all countries Presidential aircrafts always have their transponders off. They are transporting the country's leaders and the leaders never wants people to be able to easily track their locations in flight. So far, nothing strange or unusual that the transponders was off. It would be strange if it were a regular passenger aircraft.

This is very often the case with US presidential plane air force one which frequently do surprise travels to other countries with their transponders off for surprise visits. However most countries leaders do that including Russia, France and most countries. For security reasons leaders don't want anyone to track their positions. In most cases they even go further by traveling together with several other aircrafts at the same time so that if spotted, people can't know exactly in which aircraft the country's leader is in.
