Sagamore Spirit Rye Barrel Select (Whiskey Crusaders' Pick) Review

- The Whiskey Crusaders donated a bottle of the channel's own barrel pick, and the gents compare with a standard Sagamore Rye.
Big thanks to Patron Saint Matthew Zitrick for the booze. Cheers!
Daniel & Rex glad you guys liked it. Yes we did pick the way more interesting whiskey nerd version. We always prefer picking outlier barrels over what tastes like a standard one. Best thing to do in a barrel house is say show me the weird ones and those generally are our favorites. Cheers.
I know I have a budget rep but I have one of these bottles and it is outstanding. The nose and the palate are complex and constantly changing.
Thanks for the shout-out you Magnificent Bastards!
Thanks for the shout out! We do love the funky bottles!
Yo! When are we gonna finish going through the quintessential wall? The suspense is killing me! REX, for the PEOPLE.........
Ryes are quickly becoming my favorite whiskeys.
There are so many awesome ryes today that we did not have 5 years ago.
Any recommendations?
I am only now starting to try more things, as I was initially turned off by one that had a lot of dill and licorice flavors, neither of which I dig.
I tried the Bob Dylan one though & really dug it & I am starting to like high rye bourbons.
@@karl_alan have you tried pikesville or rittenhouse, old overholt at all? You might also try woodinville or wilderness trail
@@WhiskeyCrusaders thank you for the recommendations. I will start there
@@karl_alan bulliet rye and possibly whistle pig which I've heard is good but I can't find
I’ve got three picks of the Barrel Selects and none disappointed. Love that they bottle it at 110, which is practically cask strength (only 2-3 less).
When referring to mgp they sound like Bo Katan from Mandalorian referring to the clones. “I’ve heard your voice a thousand times” 🤣
Sagamore is really hit or miss. My wife and I visited their distillery in Baltimore and it was awesome. Of all of their offerings, their port finished rye was the best and most memorable. I'd love to try this!
Sagamore is great. I am a big fan of their cask strength and finished ones. If you like the port there are several new finished ones as well now that replaced it. They have a cognac, calvados, manhattan, and tequila that I have tried. I have hard that distillery is amazing to visit. Hope to get there one day. Cheers
@@WhiskeyCrusaders I remember trying their cask strength during the tour 2yrs ago and being turned off by what I percevied to be excessive heat. Perhaps I need to give it another go! I have noticed their other finished series and I look forward to trying them relatively soon!
@@jeremybamgbade absolutely try the other finished ones. I have noticed with their cask strength each batch is different and prefer certain batches over others. Cheers
I have a barrel select Sagamore Spirits rye that I got from Total wine that I absolutely LOVE. SOOO freaking good.
Awesome there are some great picks out there.
Grabbed a bottle from the Mirage my last time in Dallas. All of my buddies and I love this pick. Great job WC
Yes it is Galen. Cheers.
Thanks Galen! Cheers friend! 🥃
I still think it's be great, since you edit in a "funk" every time Daniel says the word, if you could edit on Bob Ross' afro every time Rex says "coloring outside/inside the lines"
I am still hoping y'all will do an episode with a tour of all the whiskeys on the special wall.
Recently I'm addicted to rye whiskey
I am allowed to see it for reference
Sagamore double oak is really good
I agree it is.
2:55 Rex’s floating head😂🤣😭
That ladder in the end left me with so much anxiety that my heart skiped two palpitations..
That ladder is scary when using it in the vault. I am always afraid it will hit something or get wedged too hard and pop some bottles off the shelf.
please hire taller staff..
@@davidelourenco2537 haha being a hobbit myself its hard
@@WhiskeyCrusaders would love to help from the top of my 1,85 meters if whisky vault branch opens in Lisbon. Hugs from Portugal!
@@davidelourenco2537 sounds like a great plan. Cheers
This is a year ago. I just got a Sagamore Cask Strength that is both MGP and Maryland distillates with 4 to 7 year old ryes. The new stuff is really good with very little licorice, lots of dark sugars, minty and rye blueberry muffins
Idea for the empty bottles...wind chimes. You can have a $1k MacCallen M wind chime
A *zesty* keyframe on Rex's face there. Didn't go unnoticed. Well done Fancy Dan.
"I don't spread it around...I know what I'm doing."
Good Morning Gentlemen. Well I just got tired of seeing people write "first" , so I thought I'd change it up.
I believe early next year Sagamore is going to start bottling whiskey they've been aging at Sagamore in Northern Baltimore County.
You are correct. 2021 is when they will start releasing there own around May is what I have heard.
@@WhiskeyCrusaders Yeah they said April 2021 at the earliest
I’m never this early! GM from AZ you MB’s ! 🥃
Happy New Year 2021
Thanks for very entertaining videos, dudes! Definitely contributing to my whiskey journey. I'm trying to get into rye whiskey and so far I had Old Scout single barrel, 4 yrs, Willett Rye, 4 yrs, and Chicken Cock. I like them, but I get very intense vanilla and Christmas spice notes. Could you please recommend something that will make me feel like I'm biting into a loaf of rye bread?
GOOD MORNING YOU MB'S... 2020 is almost gone... 🥴🥃🥂😜
You pick 2 barrels and they blend the 2. So you pick a barrel of high and low that gets blended.
You should do a video where you taste the items/flavors you are referencing all the time. For example, drink some vanilla, chew on an oak stave, drink some herbal tea, eat a butterscotch, eat candied citrus . Or make Rex eat any flavor Daniel references. 🤣 Shenanigans
At the store i work at we have a barrel picked sagamore rye. I thought they were going to review it for a second😂
How is your barrel pick?
@@WhiskeyCrusaders very good one of the best ryes ive had so far. A bit more sweet on the pallet than what you would find in a normal rye
@@wolverine6314 that is awesome to hear. Cheers
It's definately a major third interval between the Glencairns!
Major second. Specifically F# to E.
@@TheBradWhittington good ear man. Do you have perfect pitch?
gelncairn tone is a whole step :)
It’s a whole step Daniel... drummers 😂
Hey MBs I find with some nice bourbons like 1792 that on the nose I get hot dog mustard. Like Coney Island hot dog mustard. Maybe because American hot dogs contain corn syrup? Anybody else get that?
I have not but will certainly look for it next time
Upvoting in the hopes that they will try 1792 just to look for Coney Island hot dog mustard
@@sarahgiggles9444 good plan
Now even Sagamore Rye if you look at the label it says distilled in Maryland and Indiana bottled in Maryland. Soon it will just be Maryland
Considering MGP is so important in sourcing, and American whiskey generally... Is it possible to visit the distillery?
Rex sounded genuinely hurt when he said "You don't pay attention to me!" Come on Daniel. Pay attention to Rex.
I heard that if you want to try something really strong it should be Twisted Tea.
It's a major 2nd 🤓 former music major here...
Good afternoon bastards. I know my comments will go unnoticed but it's ok i still love you guys..... Cheers
Cheers!
Welcome to the wind chime vault! We prance, spin, sing and make you feel uncomfortable! Sometimes there’s even whiskey!
Do you guys believe that adding ice to whiskey bruises it? Makes it more harsh?
Well the ice waters it down and cools it so you can lose nuance when you use ice with the extreme of ice compared to the human body temperature. You can also pull the ice out when flavor reaches perfect palate to your liking. Cheers
@@WhiskeyCrusaders I’ve never been a fan of it. Always reminds me of a watered down and flat soda. 🤷🏻♂️
@@Retro_Beek agree which is why i much prefer neat. Cheers
I Iike my Screaming Vikings only with the cucumber bruised.
Well... we have to see this "Shrine" now
Interesting fact: Westland Distillery in Seattle has done a Silver City cask exchange and on the label it says "Aged in MAGNIFICENT BASTARD & FAT WOODY Beer Casks" hmmm is there a similarity there?????? Getting ready to try iy wish you were here.
I wish yall would do the 16 year rye noble collection crown royal.
You guys think this drinks similar to the Willett 4 year Rye? I get a lot of green tea and herbal tea in both.
I see the Lagavulin is back up on the shelf.
Where is it? I don’t see it
@@daddydog9275 middle row. Second down from the top
Got a small aging barrel as a gift. Any recommendations you MBs on what to experiment with?
Something cheap the first time just in case of leakage.
Why is Daniel not spinning when announcing Patron Saint? - "Spin Dickhole!"
Sagamore is a neighborhood near where i live in Mass. im assuming we stole it from the UK like all our town names
A while back Dan said he doesn't like Tabasco brand red pepper sauce. The one hot sauce aged in oak barrels. Stop ruining logic! (2020; am I right?)
It’s funny how Rex is always much more accurate and less bullshitty than Daniel, yet Daniel is the so called “sommelier”...
Wow! My comment has been edited.
You can't just tell us you have a shrine to Mr. Rogers, then NOT show us
Agree we want to see.
It's a major second, or a whole step.
Colleyville?
Yes it is between Dallas and Fort Worth at Mirage Fine Spirits
@@WhiskeyCrusaders I know that place. Attached to a gas station. Haven't been there all year. It was just surprising to hear my town mentioned in a UA-cam video.
@@schtinerbock4570 awesome we are local in the area I go there often.
Omg I tried watching this immediately after I woke up from a nap 😂, horrible mistake, I’ll try again in a bit.
Anyone notice the redbreast 12 and Jameson are missing from the wall.
Yeah they been gone for last couple of videos. Someone thought maybe they used them on another video
All I could think of is "I'm a hessian without no aggression." 😆
Maybe it's a twizzler. Also, "he doesn't pay attention to me" & "is this high rye?"
Morning fellow MB Peeps :)
Rex’s curl at the front is very Lou Diamond Phillips-esque
Funk Count: 1
Why does it seem like everyone who sources, sources from MGP?
The main reason is MGP has been around a long time and they make 50% of American whiskey. People source from them because they are huge, make good to great whiskey depending what you are going for, you can buy in bulk, and they can make any mash bill you want. Cheers
Minor third 😊
Hmmm... Is this a Speyside?
‘Tis a bourbon, not a Scotch. 😁
@@bimscutney1242 I know. I just want to annoy/quote Rex
stale red vines
Jesus Christ. Schtik overload right from the start.
Whiskey Crusaders' Picks go well with bacon, cats and screaming children. Just sayin'. 🥓 🐱 🧒
Thanks Erik this is very true. Cheers
I want your jobs!
I'm sipping a Dalmore Cigar and thinking to myself ... why don't I start my own Whisky Bar? Then I realise it's because I'd drink the all the stock!
Don't waste your time with Sagamore. Epoch is the best Rye from Baltimore and they actually make it themselves.
Sagamore makes its own Rye. The distillery is newer so they worked with MGP to have product until what was made at the distillery aged. They worked with MGP to create their own recipe and have further altered it so it will be 100% there's and a true representation of Maryland Style Rye Whiskey. By comparison Epoch is Rye but it's not a Maryland Style Rye. It's not a better whiskey, it's just a different type.
