Sad fact: Mara Wilson's mother was hospitalized with terminal breast cancer and died 4 months before Matilda came out in theaters. From what I've read in interviews, Danny Devito is one of the nicest people you could work with in Hollywood; Mara Wilson have spoken about how he and his then wife became mentors and stand-in parents for her on the set of Matilda while her own mother battled cancer. And at the set for It's always sunny, he apparently often brings people together to cook dinner for them, and makes sure everybody keeps themselves mentally healthy and stress-free. Kind people like that are very rare in movie industry.
Danny Devito is one of my favorite actors, he's honestly the best version of penguin. definitely would love the next episode of this series to be about Robin Williams or Mike Meyers.
I'm glad someone else thinks so. I'm a big comic fan and The Penguin is a character I just never understood, he was just a slightly deformed gangster, so what? Danny DeVito as The Penguin, now that was an interesting character, he was disgusting and cruel, vulgar but with a weird humanity to him. Some said that his version of Penguin was confused but he reminds me of a real life insane murderers, yes they're scary monsters but it's also not their fault and they need help. When I think of the Penguin, I think of Danny DeVito's spectacular performance~
I'd recommend Robin Lord Taylor's portrayal of the Penguin in Gotham, it's my personal favorite. I think he nailed that wonderful "savage animal wearing the skin of a sophisticate" motif. That's not to disparage Devito of course, because while his arc may not be perfect, in terms of acting and look, he's phenomenal!
I'm sorry, but wrong. Oswald from Gotham and from Batman The Tell Tale Series are both better. I loved the theory of him getting the nickname from his injury induced limp walk in Gotham. And loved the back and forth banter between him and Bruce in The Tell Tale Series. Burton's Penguin isn't even a person. Fascinating to look at, but watching is a different story. I can't believe Mysterio can pin Big Show for a 3 count and I can't believe that version of Penguin ever exists. If the suspension of belief doesn't work than the performance/direction doesn't work.
What I love about DeVito in It's Always Sunny is just how much his character reflects the behind the scenes drama. Back when the show was still young, the executives threatened to cancel it unless the show runners could get a big name star signed on. DeVito agreed to the role, keeping the show afloat much like how his character keeps the gang in the clear by bank rolling their shenanigans.
@@KairuHakubi Also gotta love all the insults they fling at him. There's something beautiful about calling your biggest name a fat goblin on a daily basis.
If I remember right, DeVito was one of the first famous actors who did the cameo with their own name in the Simpsons (albeit James Earl Jones before him). I remember listening the comment reels of earlier episodes where they had the struggle of getting anyone to do camoes with their own name for not believing on some family animation, so DeVito sure hit my soft spot for doing that.
I'm glad he didn't tear apart Matilda for one very good reason. Stories like Matilda help teach kids that the reality is that not all adults are right. Kids in abusive and neglectful families are taught that what they go through is right and normal, and movies like this help them realise they're not alone and it does happen to other kids.
I think 'It's always sunny' is the best showcase so far for DeVito's talents, it lets him fully indulge his darkness, silliness and acting talent, and he's a perfect complement to the rest of the ensemble. Matilda's world is so mean because there are real children who's parents, the ones who hold their entire lives in their hands, absolutely hate them. That is... an INSANELY uncomfortable thing to confront in any context, but Devito steps up to the plate and does it through a child's perspective no less. I mean really think about it, how many kids go through horrible things and have no outlet to understand or cope with any of it because the media facilitating that is never *for* them? The idea that a child's experiences are not child friendly is just sad in its own right, and overcoming that dissonance actually makes Matilda important.

This was fascinating, especially discovering that he and Rhea Perlman were a couple. It makes so much sense! My favorite film of Devito's has to be the "the War of the Roses." I saw it for the first time when I was a sophomore in college, and loved his asides and the fireworks between Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas. The man is brilliant at dark comedy.
One of Roald Dahl’s consistent themes throughout his books is having the villains be over-the-top, ugly, black hearted grownups who treat children like vermin. The Witches, Spiker and Sponge from the Giant Peach, the Trunchbull here in Matilda. With their child victims being the ones who rise up to get back at them. It was essentially his way of telling an underdog story. It’s ultimately why I consider Matilda the best movie adaptation of its source material. It didn’t shy away from how nasty, scary and pure evil the Trunchbull was in the book; throwing kids out of windows, forcing one of them to eat an enormous cake and even locking them in what was essentially an iron maiden. Holy oompa-loompa hell!
I have a friend who works in Congress and he told me a tale of a congressmen past down through the generations of congress. You see, there was once a congressman who would vote to veto any bill that came through congress, no matter what the bill said or even if it did align with his views, he would always vote to veto it without fail. In fact, he was so infamous for this that they gave him the nickname: Danny the veto.
17:20- I was not expecting that. Of all the parts of this video, this made my day, not because he's praising this film now, not because it seems like he finally gets it, but because I was in a similar boat. I couldn't get through this film as a kid, but I kinda love it now.
@@ElvenRaptor Fun Fact: Getting DeVito for Hercules was very difficult because he said no at first, Disney had to do alot convincing to get him on board. He was also the original choice for Mario in the live action film, but he said no. Sadly I can't blame him because Bob Hoskins regrets the role.
Holy cow I didn't realize Devito directed Throw Momma From The Train I thought he just starred in it! He's amazing but so underrated but I think that's why he has lasted so long in the industry.
My dad when he was young was his driver when he came in town one time. Apparently he had 1 rule. No short jokes. At the end of the night after they drove around he got out of the car and said "ya listened kid" and tipped him really well. Such a great guy
"You okay?" "I'm kind of fucked-up in general so it's hard to gauge." That is an awesome line. My favorite slapstick joke is from "Throw Mama from the Train." When DeVito conks Crystal upside the head with a frying pan. I laugh hysterically every time I see it. The timing and DeVito's "bad" acting make it such a perfect moment.
I wonder what people did when Doug was filming that ad. I imagine everyone chilling in the house and then a high-pitched voice comes from the bathroom and everyone rushes to help.

I'm convinced Doug at the time of this video's recording was praising Matilda while, just offscreen, a twitchy-eyed Mara Wilson was ominously standing over him with a loaded gun pointed at his face.
Hey Doug. Thank you. I have so many words to describe how awesome this video is. I have been watching you for years. This is amazing work. I learned so much.
Of all the essays you have done on so many topics over the years, I think this truly was the best. If I wanted to sum up just how talented Devito is, its that growing up and watching all of his movies, I never really noticed his height. Yea a movie like twins uses it effectively against Schwarzenegger, but Devito commands each performance so completely, I honestly never really noticed it until I was much older, and really never had a thought about how atypical he is until seeing this. You never notice Danny Devito because he totally commands every role he is in to the point where you never see him as Danny Devito. That is such a rare and unique talent, it's great to see something heartfelt here really draw attention to it.
1:30 DeVito's directing style is so damn interesting He's like a mix of Sam Raimi,Terry Gilliam and Brian De Palma 14:50 split diopters 17:50 well that is roald dahl books in general 20:02 that's called symoblislm
Thank you for this. I also felt he offered far more than one note and deserves a deeper appreciation. I think he's very underrated as a dramatic actor. My favorite moment of his is his final monologue in The Big Kahuna.
I wonder what Mara Wilson would say about it... You know what, if he can finally accept Matilda maybe I can finally accept something from my childhood that I hated but everybody else loves, Cats Don't Dance!
"Throw Momma from the Train " is one of my favorite childhood films. With exception of one scene that was a little too scary for the childhood me, the film never failed to amuse me.
It was very interesting to hear the personal stories of the Critic, about how he got acquainted with various films. It is necessary to insert this into reviews more often.
Glad to see you sticking to going on with this series. It's always great to see you try something new, even when it doesn't work, or REALLY doesn't work and fails spectacularly, insert joke about your thing on The Wall here. I know you're still wearing the getup, the tie in this one, but it feels less like a character being played, and I've grown to appreciate Doug Walker talk a lot more about films and actors more than The Nostalgia Critic, despite everything. Hope this series keeps going and I hope you manage to improve even more.
I have to say after watching this video I have a ton of respect for Danny DeVito not knowing that he did all these different movies directed as well as produce it's just amazes me this is a truly great talent and a true legend respect.
I loved his performance in Jack the Bear. Playing a single father of 2 who is very comical and funny, but at the same time trying to fight his drinking problem and depression after the loss of his wife. Its a really good movie if you all haven't seen it, give it a watch.
I mean...I get that you were more focused on his work as a director, but I'm surprised at the lack of mention of Renaissance Man. IMO Renaissance Man is one of his absolute best acted movies, right up there with Robin Williams' Dead Poet's Society.
23:39 Am I the only one that hears Danny's fist fitting his hand? It just sounds like there was a sound match with the music. Like it hits perfectly every time I see.
Death to Smoochy is in my Top 10 Favorite Films of All-Time. I love it simply because of it being Dark Satire. It makes fun of the Childrens' Television Business, Organized Crime, Corporations, Corruption, it hits them all unapologetically. Plus this is an unrestrained performance by Robin Williams. He's off-tilt and I love every moment of it. My favorite scene is when he calls the Smoochy actor (Ed Norton) and warns him that he's gonna hunt him down; saying he's going on Safari before making a poor Elephant trumpeting sound before hanging up. It's so delightfully dark and silly, it's really worth the watch.
I love videos like this that go over a create person's career. It's helpful (to me, as a creative hobbyist) to see the similarities between these stories - making big gains from trying something new, confidence, having a vision, and luck.
I think my all time favorite Devito movie has to be 1994's Renaissance man , not sure what it is about that movie but it just has this cozy little nook in my heart
My sister's friend met Danny when he was shooting a movie (I think it was "What's the worst that could happen?") in Boston. They were at a hotel, middle of the night, making noise, partying...and there was a knock at the door. They ignored it. Another knock, louder this time. They answered the door, and Danny was standing in the doorway! And he said "Hey, could ya turn the fucking music down, please?! It's 2AM!" "Yes Sir." And they did just that.

@@manuelalbertoromero9528 He had parkinsons too, if he were gonna live as intended he would be a wreck the last years of his life with memory loss and eating pain pills daily. Its really sad he killed himself, but at least he died the way he wanted instead of getting remembered by what happened to his body and mind
Can you explain point 1 again? He didn’t want Mara... walking towards him so he made close up shots in Matilda to... scare her? I don’t get it.
We all know his craziest career choice:
Being the human version of red m&m
No seriously he did that, go watch the 2019 super bowl commercial!
“You wanna eat me?”
That’s my favorite one!
Its true 👍.
The man is brilliant at dark comedy.
i loved the fact you mentioned "Other people's money" he has this speech that rivals Michael Douglass's "greed is good" speech.
Is it honestly weird that last night I wanted another career dive episode, and exactly today we get one.
In fact, he was so infamous for this that they gave him the nickname:
Danny the veto.
Ron Paul? 😏
Your joke would work if not for the fact Congress only vetoes presidential statutes, not bills. Simply casting a no vote for a bill is not a veto.
Grr, I wish there was a president named Daniel so the pun would work. Congress doesn't have veto power. It probably works in a non US country.
17:20- I was not expecting that. Of all the parts of this video, this made my day, not because he's praising this film now, not because it seems like he finally gets it, but because I was in a similar boat. I couldn't get through this film as a kid, but I kinda love it now.
It's actually appropriate that DeVito made Matilda. His mean-spirited, darkly comic style was a good match for a Roald Dahl story.
Fun Fact: Iago from Aladdin was originally going to be played by DeVito.
@@orangeslash1667 That would've worked, too.
I want to see him career dive on Nicholas Cage, Jeff goldblum, Jack Nicholson, and Tim Curry, just to name a few.
👍👍👍👍👍
I think Tim Curry should be off limits because he had a stroke a while back.
@@CheeseReaper22
That doesn't diminish his work. He's still legendary and can have a talk about his career
@@CheeseReaper22 Career Dive is a positive look on someone's career, if anything Tim Curry is even more due for appreciation.
@@UltimateGamerCC Well the phrase Career Dive really threw me off.
As terrifying as the thumbnail for this video is, this is a terrific dive into Danny DeVito. That thumbnail though. Jesus.
Terrifying or...Beautiful?
@@ChannelAwesome ...can’t it be both?
My dad when he was young was his driver when he came in town one time. Apparently he had 1 rule. No short jokes. At the end of the night after they drove around he got out of the car and said "ya listened kid" and tipped him really well. Such a great guy
For those you're wondering where's the new intro? Well, give it a week or two for the next Nostalgia Critic episode.
Next week is the new intro
@@ChannelAwesome Thank you! I'll look forward to the new intro and a full review.
I’m glad you’re continuing this this series!
Doug: “So I start reviewin’”
These Career dive videos are so interesting to me because I just love learning about some of the most talented and wild people on the planet.
I always appreciated his voice acting rolls the most
His role as Herb Powell, Homer’s estranged half-brother is one of my fave celebrity guest voices on The Simpson’s.
I was actually thinking of that, too! Loved Herbert Powell on The Simpson’s because Danny Devito made that character come to life!
I wonder what people did when Doug was filming that ad. I imagine everyone chilling in the house and then a high-pitched voice comes from the bathroom and everyone rushes to help.
By this point, probably just like "Oh, the weird guy next door must be filming again."
He was great as The Lorax and the Penguin from Batman Returns.
The Lorax wasnt good
@@goodburger1114 if you think Gotham’s penguin is good, get lost
@@goodburger1114 poopy opinion
@@dillonohlemiller9027 they said Danny was great as the Lorax not that the movie as a whole was good.
Since "Death to Smoochy" was mentioned, I would LOVE a Career Dive on Robin Williams.
Danny DeVito will always be Herc's Phil 🐐🐐🐐
Philotetes, Trainer of Heroes and Eater of Fruit Bowls. XD
Man I love Danny, so funny and talented and seems like a genuinely good human being. Small in stature but a bona fide giant in the industry. Personally I've always liked his penguin and Twins. He and Arnold were great together.
his portrayal of Penguin was better than the story around him, i still sympathized for him and understood why he was the way he was.

Glad you like them!
He has always been fun to watch. The War of the Roses, Matilda, and Death to Smoochy were awesome.
DeVito's heart surpasses even the tallest of humans. God bless that man.
I had the same experience with "Anchorman" you had with "Matilda". For years, I hated it for being crass, stupid, and over the top. Now, I love it for those exact reasons.
Not gonna lie, I'd love to see Danny devito and al pacino act together, they would somehow compliment one another's style
I would genuinely want to see this.
I always compared Danny DeVito to Joe Pesci. I feel like they could play brothers.
@@Pssybart Imagine Scorsese working witj Devito that would be AWESOME.

Yuri, like from C&C: Red Alert 2?
I actually went to the same acting school as him! He’s a massive legend to me and so many friends.
Danny Devito is a great rounded actor still his best work is in drama like in Renaissance Man
loved that movie!
@@VonSpyder Absolutely, it's a damned good film and it feels completely wrong that Wikipedia has it listed as a comedy film.
@@AkinokazeHaruichiban i always viewed it as more of a comedic drama.
@@VonSpyder Even though it has some jokes, and is "fish out of water", I've just never considered it to be a comedy or comedic-x.
To me it's just a drama with some humour. I'd actually compare it to the truman show. It contains jokes but it's not a comedy at all.
"You were all right, I was wrong, it happens. Let's never talk about it again."
*Internet:* Oh no! We're going to always talk about it!
Late 70s/early 80s, Danny would’ve been perfect to play Al Capone.
Glad you enjoyed it!!!
1:30 DeVito's directing style is so damn interesting
He's like a mix of Sam Raimi,Terry Gilliam and Brian De Palma
14:50 split diopters
17:50 well that is roald dahl books in general
20:02 that's called symoblislm
I think his style is most like Roald Dahl or if Roald Dahl had been a director instead of an author. It's unique among directors.
@@DuelScreen you nailed it
Thank you for this. I also felt he offered far more than one note and deserves a deeper appreciation. I think he's very underrated as a dramatic actor. My favorite moment of his is his final monologue in The Big Kahuna.
The Critic finally understanding and liking Matilda? Now that's some good character development right there. BD
I wonder what Mara Wilson would say about it... You know what, if he can finally accept Matilda maybe I can finally accept something from my childhood that I hated but everybody else loves, Cats Don't Dance!
@@hamurshwhat did you think?
@@thomastakesatollforthedark2231 I think that it's not that bad...
Thank you. DeVito has been underrated for decades, and just keeps producing.
I rewatched Matilda for the first time in nearly 18 years. I somehow completely forgot she had supernatural powers.
Danny DeVito's character in "Taxi" is one of my favorite mean boss characters in television.
And I love "Death to Smootchie".
"Throw Momma from the Train
" is one of my favorite childhood films. With exception of one scene that was a little too scary for the childhood me, the film never failed to amuse me.
I’ve always loved Danny DeVito. Thank you for giving him the recognition he deserves.
It was very interesting to hear the personal stories of the Critic, about how he got acquainted with various films. It is necessary to insert this into reviews more often.
I know I can skip the advertisement in the middle of every video but I never do they can be strangely entertaining.
2 Future Career Dive episode suggestions:
Dustin Hoffman
Jon Lovitz
To conclude: Danny DeVito must be protected at all costs.
Imagine if when Disney remakes Hercules, Danny Devito was behind the camera this time. We could get something different and dark.
Or even darker, Hunchback.
I have to say - I love this concept. I was hooked on this episode of NostalgiaCritic. Well done!
I actually think he's, no joke, no irony, a very handsome man. Especially in his younger years when he was suited up.
Wow, I honestly didn't even know that he had a movie directing career I had seem some of the movies I he talked about but didn't know Devito did them
I have to say after watching this video I have a ton of respect for Danny DeVito not knowing that he did all these different movies directed as well as produce it's just amazes me this is a truly great talent and a true legend respect.
I mean the man directed Matilda, starring Doug's FAVORITE young actress.
@Raymond Frand
His A Simple Wish review.
*DONT MESS WITH MARA WILSON!*
23:39 Am I the only one that hears Danny's fist fitting his hand? It just sounds like there was a sound match with the music. Like it hits perfectly every time I see.
You should talk about Voice Actors/Actresses like Frank Welker, Tara Strong, Cree Summer, Mel Blanc and Tom Kenny!
John DiMaggio
@@claymathewselevator8121 That is a good one

I think my all time favorite Devito movie has to be 1994's Renaissance man , not sure what it is about that movie but it just has this cozy little nook in my heart
I’m just so glad Doug FINALLY talks about Sunny. It’s my all time greatest show to binge.
I wanna Danny Devito month to celebrate this great Legendary man

My sister's friend met Danny when he was shooting a movie (I think it was "What's the worst that could happen?") in Boston. They were at a hotel, middle of the night, making noise, partying...and there was a knock at the door. They ignored it. Another knock, louder this time. They answered the door, and Danny was standing in the doorway! And he said "Hey, could ya turn the fucking music down, please?! It's 2AM!" "Yes Sir." And they did just that.
