  • William T. Sherman is one of the most famous or infamous Civil War Generals. In this biography, you will learn about Sherman's personal life as well as his military career. You will find throughout this series a commander who had a lot of internal strife and personal problems, which he attempted to overcome. Essentially orphaned at a young age, he was taken in by a prominent politician and he would strive his entire life to get out from under Thomas Ewing's shadow and get away from Ohio. Sherman fell in love with the South and wanted to stay there, but the Civil War forced him to choose a side. Even though he loved the south, he thought that secession created disorder, which he hated and sought to end the chaos through preserving the Union.

    Far better than any documentary I have seen in a long long time. Thank you for not cluttering it up with loud music in the back ground, or a slow pace of narration, or long pauses where no information is given. Great pace, not too fast not too slow, great visual representation, maps are good. Unbiased. You packed more in in one half hour than the big budget ones do in hours. This is the second video I went to on this subject. The first was a TV doc. There was so much music and noise and explosions etc in the audio I turned it off in less than four minutes. Keep up the good work.

    Sherman wrote in his memoirs “war is ALL hell”. Probably the most misquoted quote of all time. His and Grants’ memoirs are a must for all civil war buffs.

      A quote by a famous person getting taken out of context? Who would have thought? LOL
      Both memoirs are great. I love how Grant can't bring himself to criticize anyone for anything.

    As a Canadian and older, I am so glad I watched this. I have always been interested in all about the Civil War. I thought Sherman was so hard and cruel. He was so maligned. He was so human and seemed to me kind and human and in tune. I'm so glad to hear all of this. So sorry Sherman you have been disparaged

    One of the greatest Americans. Almost alone among Americans, he presciently saw the war as it would unfold. Referring to Southern succession--And where are your men and appliances of war to contend against them? The North can make a steam engine, locomotive or railway car. Scarcely a yard of cloth or pair of shoes can you make... you are bound to fail. Only in your passion are you prepared for war. In all else are you completely unprepared, with a bad cause to start with."

  • @ellietobe
    @ellietobe 7 місяців тому +1

    Sherman was a tough old bird but it took men like him and Grant to do what had to be done. Unfortunately, that war went on much longer than it should have because of the terrible generals that Lincoln had in charge before Grant and Sherman finally got a chance to do the job.
    However Sherman said it…war is hell. You don’t get into one in order to be gentle. People suffer. People get hurt. People die. War is one of the ugliest things that human beings do.
