Hey Avalanche, your channel is awesome. We're kindred spirits when it comes to this survival horror revival. I haven't had time lately to keep up on everything on social media, so that's why I appreciate the attention you're bringing to titles such as this. Hollowbody is 100% right up my alley. I'll be aquiring it for my inventory, come hell or high water.
I think the current indie Survival Horror revival is a repeat of what the initial Indie Game explosion was originally. A collection of extremely passionate game developers who just wanted to make a good game straight out of their childhood. They're not in it for the money or because it is popular. They're in it because they're tired of waiting for their dream game to be made so they'll do it themselves. It's also been a long time coming because a number of these games have been in development for a while. If I recall correctly, the two person studio of rose-engine started working on SIGNALIS in 2014, which was then released in 2022. It was their 8 year passion project. Normally an 8 year development cycle is that of production hell. But SIGNALIS' quality indicates it was closer to two people creating their masterpiece and didn't want to release until it was basically perfect without compromise. I think the Survival Horror revival is in its nice renaissance period. Unfortunately, the pessimist in me is saying that give it a few more years and it'll be as bloated like the Metroidvania genre is now due to more and more people jumping on the train. Then again, maybe "true" Survival Horror is just niche enough that it can avoid that whole issue as more Mainstream Action Horror titles like modern Resident Evil and that Dead Space remake "shields" the mainstream attention from classic Survival Horror. And we as gamers can eat well as we get both high budget and lower budget horror games.
My dream game since around 1999 has been a metroidvania done in the style of Sega Genesis' Shinobi 3. Same acrobatic character abilities and then some, same enemy/boss, and music aesthetic but bigger and laid out with a progression system. Unfortunately I have no game creation abilities and Bushiden which sort of resembled my dream game is apparently in development hell haha.
As a gamer who wants to dive deeper into more horror games would this new wave of indie games be a good start? I struggle with emulation at times, and the big companies don't preserve all the classic games.
@@chozochiefxiii3298 I'm not really a Survival Horror gamer myself (I just like watching my friends and YTbers play). However, the one Survival Horror game that I absolutely played the heck out of is the aforementioned SIGNALIS. I played it once on normal and once on hard mode. It's such a beautiful game. I also like it a lot because it's not big on jump scares and is more about creeping horror. The two other games I would mention are Tormented Souls and Crow Country. Tormented Souls is part satire and part love letter to janky old Survival Horror. If you love B Movie plots, weird dialogue, and wonky puzzles, Tormented Souls is absolutely lovely. I haven't looked into Crow Country too much yet but I know the main character Mara is hilarious in a very dry and wry way.
A lot of this game has me thinking of a British horror movie from a couple years ago the name of which I can't seem to remember - in it, the entire population of England finds themselves locked in their homes and some kind of (sinister) public broadcast starts giving out instructions to help "keep them safe". Things get worse and worse and eventually one character gets absorbed into the TV and turns into some kind of TV/cable-based monstrosity. Carnage ensues. Thematically it's mostly about xenophobia and the propagation of paranoia through the media and pop culture - not a particularly great watch, but aesthetically it's pretty darn similiar to what this game has going. Wonder if the dev watched that movie at some point. Anyway, the game rocks. Always excited for more modern survival horror!

Really curious to hear your thoughts on the SH2 remake once it releases. Your videos on the originals got me into the series and even inspired me to track down a crt to play the ps2 versions lol. Hollow body seems to scratch some of the same itch so that’s nice to see, hopefully bloober team can capture some of that feeling
Yeah, that seems to be a common complaint. Guess that just means the developer has to make another survival horror game to address it! Win/win for everyone.
After watching your review today I bought the game and beat it in about 6 hours with continous play. I too am running into the same issues with that underground level gate, the 4 hearts and the key in the beginning. I also agree the story is kinda out there I dont see how anything really connects and to call this a "cyberpunk" survival horror is kind of misleading as the only tech thing I noticed was when you look at your map, it's seen through her eye as if it's been hard wired into her brain. It's def no signalis but id give it a 6.5-7 our of 10. Great review as always!
@AvalancheReviews whaaaat! Why would they put that in there then... maybe the dev forgot they had put that there lol I mean hopefully an update will "fix" this, it jist doesn't make sense though
I just finished the game and had an absolute blast with it. Yeah there are definitely things that leave a lot to be desired. I actually actually never solved the heart puzzle. After the room changed so many time I just assumed it couldn't be done. Other than that and some small glitches I had a good time and would definitely play it again.
I had high hopes for this game. I played this game in intended difficulty and I never died, not once, no matter how careless I was. I never used melee combat and had plenty of ammo anyway. The game is not bad at all but in my opinion is not great either, the atmosphere is great, the gameplay is ok or good enough for this genre, the story had potential but is not as good as it could be and when I reached the end my mind automatically said: " Was that all? there has to be more" but there isn't :( , thing is that I didn't want more because the game was very good, rather I couldn't believe that that was all so it was a bit disappointing. I hated the street sections, exploration was meh and the map doesnt help too much so you get lost easily, the only enemy type that poses a threat in these wideeeeeee streets was the running dogs that sometimes hits you from behind when you cannot see them. I really think that the game have cool ideas and potential but need more work.

Idk if someone’s mentioned it already but if you go back down the ladder to the sewers there’s the tunnel across that’s long and leads to a dead end. I also thought this was the only one but on the same wall as the ladder to the right there is another tunnel that leads back to the church to get back to the apartments. Just figured this out myself.
once you get the heart by the dead guy and the music gets weird go in and out of the camera change in that room, you will end up back at the shrine, this will put a giant heart where the locks are....but i dont know what else that does....however i did not think about bringing the key back to the apartment
the game was alright id give it a 6/10. i thought having more weapon types than enemy types was an interesting choice along with having no memorable locations. i forgot it was cyberpunk about 5 minutes after the first cutscene. aside from that single cutscene, a ui element, and some strange bathtub jokes, nothing indicates this game takes place in a not-so-distant cyberpunk future, all the other lore tidbits could have happened anytime within the last century. props to the small/solo team, a 4 hour long silent hill clone is hard to find theyre usually super short.
The awsome thing about these new indie survival horror games is most if them aren't chasing a fad. Games loke the original Alone in the Dark, RE and SH were true passion projects made by people with creative vision and ingenuity to make that vision a reality. Most of the clones while some were genuinely good and unique, were more likely a board pointing to the other games and saying "hey RE made capcom millions, SH made Konami millions make a game like that. (Spoiler-Related) 10:54 Is very possible the bioterrorism attack could be a cover story by some manner of experiment by the property corporation, which would explain by said corporation has a PMC in the first place, and how suspicious and shady they act.
Hey dude, thanks for your video. SPOILER!!!! But according to the dev the hearts puzzle can't be solved. I understand your frustration and I totally agree with your assessment of story not tying together.
I just realized that Avalanche didn't make a proper review of Them and Us, a really cool modern survival horror game. A game where he doesn't have to spend first ten opening minutes explaining why the game technically fits the bill for the survival horror genre!
Hey, Avalanche! It’s officially October and I know you’re a horror buff for video games. Can you do a retrospective on the CONDEMNED Series? Condemned: Criminal Origins and its sequel Condemned 2: Bloodshot were developed by the same guys who made F.E.A.R and Criminal Origins was a launch Xbox 360 game. I highly recommend playing Condemned 1 on your Series X which is Backwards Compatible. It’s also available on PC. Unfortunately, Condemned 2 is only available on PS3 and 360 (not BC and not on PC) with the 360 version being the best (PS3 doesn’t have trophies and graphics look noticeably worse compared to 360)
Haven't played the game yet but just from the brief little story synopsis presented in this video, I would assume that the terrorist attack did occur and it's what sets the games plot into motion. The weird tree thing may be a collective hivemind of all residents that got exposed to the biological weapon eventually kinda all melding together as one sentinel structure, kinda like the Flesh Golems in "I AM A HERO". I would assume that Sasha is also apart of that Hivemind and her lingering humanity is what urges Mica to escape to not meet the same fate, but eventually Mica meets the structure and I choses to be apart of it with whatever of Sasha is left. The Guy you rescued managed to "save" both you and Tax but the damage is done, Mica's mind is lost in the Hivemind and Tax is assume broken or insane. Plan the play the game but just spitballing what I assume the story was based off snippets from the video.
I also kind of figured that maybe the real estate pmc guys did a false flag attack with the virus to take over the property across the city but it backfired in their face and lead to the issues in the game as well. Making a guess ofc. Tl;dr is that the bioterroist attack is a false flag by greedy real estate guys
Likewise haven't played, but that was my guess, too. I don't think it was actually a terrorist attack since the intro was specific with "suspected" bioterrorism; just corporate malfeasance causing a pseudo-gray goo from that AI nano cell doohickey. I'm also wondering whether The Guy is just a trojan horse to escape the quarantine.
@@TrinSpin @TrinSpin Initially suspected that the reason the Structure wanted them to escape was the spread it's influence but then it takes Mica and Tax and keeps them which kinda contradicts that. Only makes sense that it's Sasha's isolated will that spurs her to escape and why it's so friendly and knows so much about her. At some point Sasha loses the mind battle and Mother takes control at the end / Sasha succumbed to Mothers influence.
@@MegaOverclocked Fair point; though I'd say that until we play the game we lack too much information to interpret motivations/mechanisms (which equally applies for my first guess of The Guy being meant as a trojan horse)
hear me out, my theory on what the "mother" is, is what became of the "survivors" after merging into a single entity in some sort of mutation after the bioattack, ala Dead Space and merged all their consciousness' into one, one of them being Sasha, that's why it knows Mica
Unrelated music question: What are your thoughts on the new Linkin Park singer Jared? Great video btw, I'll definitely check this game out if it's available on the PS Store.
Hey Jared, I’m not sure if it’s classed as survival horror. But would you ever do a review on Alien Isolation? Just played it recently, and was easily one of the most terrifying games I’ve ever played, and funnest since Resi 1 / 2 and Silent Hill
Only two games have ever forced me to quit for a break because of the stress and tension - one of those was Alien Isolation, such a good game. And a second has been confirmed!
Hey, Jared, if a game were ever to be made of Tsutomu Nihei's manga "BLAME!" would you want it to be a Survival Horror, an Immersive Sim, or a different genre (all options having absolute minimal levels of dialogue)?
Always imagined a BLAME! game to be a soul-like. I believe the locations, enemy spawning, player respawning lends well. Something like a merge of Surge, Bleak Fate and Hellpoint but... good) Playing as a generic safeguard would allow for cool customizatio. Don't think a survivor horror would work. Blame! should have a more action-based gameplay, not slow exploration.
its no Signalis. Not by a long shot. Its pretty cheap though and worth picking up for a quick playthrough. One person doing all of this is impressive and hopefully its a jumping off point for them to get into more survival horror work.
Unfortunately that backtracking puzzle you mentioned has no answers, only a flamethrower. Also I have no idea how (FUCK those sewers) but I did reach the locked grate at one point after placing the hearts, but said grate was replaced with a fleshy blockage.

So glad SH2R ended up being top tier & you ended up eating your words. I dont want you to be wrong, we all just want good Survival Horror games, whether that be old school indie releases or AAA games, as long as the games are good then we're ALL happy 😊

Is very possible the bioterrorism attack could be a cover story by some manner of experiment by the property corporation, which would explain by said corporation has a PMC in the first place, and how suspicious and shady they act.
That seems to be the most reasonable conclusion. I just wish there was something in the game that could confirm it.
Okay, multiple notifications of reviews for this game, so it should be goooood.
Unfortunately, Condemned 2 is only available on PS3 and 360 (not BC and not on PC) with the 360 version being the best (PS3 doesn’t have trophies and graphics look noticeably worse compared to 360)
need this on my retro game tv 📺
Thanks for the vid
NEW AVALANCHE BABY
hear me out, my theory on what the "mother" is, is what became of the "survivors" after merging into a single entity in some sort of mutation after the bioattack, ala Dead Space and merged all their consciousness' into one, one of them being Sasha, that's why it knows Mica
Unrelated music question: What are your thoughts on the new Linkin Park singer Jared?
Great video btw, I'll definitely check this game out if it's available on the PS Store.
huh, you dont sound bald.
I get that a lot. I have a very hair-ful voice.
I hope SH2R proves you wrong on that Bloober jab. I believe in the game, the recent footage looks great.
No one hopes I'm more wrong about that than me.
It took me until the subway to figure out the crates can break so dont feel to bad.
No physical copy like tormented souls ?
Ok, I’ll buy it
"...Hey Bloober team, you kinda fucked up, this is actually how its done" I wonder if he'll touch on this in the eventual Silent Hill 2 Remake review
I love both survival horror and cyberpunk, but I like my stories at least somewhat grounded. This seems ... weird.
Exciting
Always like a game where I have to find myself hehe. Weird hearing you say my name that often.
I watched a movie with a Jared in it recently. i know how you feel. HA!
According to the main developer, the heart puzzle in the sewer is not meant to be solved. There isn't anything missed.
Why would they add a puzzle that isn't meant to be solved? That doesn't make much sense.
"Tech Noir cyberpunk horror survival set in BRITIAN" Hoy boy, we really are fucked.
3:46 - Did someone pass a law making it illegal to not put in a RE:1 reference in your survival horror game?
It's known, mie-beach? Bettah' c'mon & ... ketchup, muh-manez.
I must ask, where is this clip from: 7:30 ?
It looks hilarious. XD
It's from an anime called great pretender.
@@AvalancheReviews Thank you.
That first location looks exactly like an English working class housing estate in the middle of England .
Did you and Boulder Punch get together and be like
"Hey lets release a video for the same game today!"
lol
We decided to double-team the internet.
It's the release day for the game ding dong
@@kyler247 true but within a minute of each other is crazy 😂
Fun game, I liked it.
keen
Get keen-er!!!!
What is the top-down game at 0:35 ?
what where the titles of the games shown in the intro?
Hey Jared, I’m not sure if it’s classed as survival horror. But would you ever do a review on Alien Isolation? Just played it recently, and was easily one of the most terrifying games I’ve ever played, and funnest since Resi 1 / 2 and Silent Hill
I still have never played that game, but i do want to one day. If it strikes me as crazy good, I'll for sure do a video on it.
@@AvalancheReviews ohhhh man. If you do play it, it would be great to hear your thoughts! Thanks for the reply man 👊
Only two games have ever forced me to quit for a break because of the stress and tension - one of those was Alien Isolation, such a good game.
Something like a merge of Surge, Bleak Fate and Hellpoint but... good)
Playing as a generic safeguard would allow for cool customizatio.
Don't think a survivor horror would work. Blame! should have a more action-based gameplay, not slow exploration.
What are the games featured in the intro?
SILENT HILL IS BACK ON THE MENU BOYS
The game's Steam page recommends a GTX 1080 for this game. Anyone knows why? I mean, it looks PS2, why does it require such big hardware? 😖
Bad optimization
Played with a 1060 and it ran good for the most part except only 2-3 areas that have a bit of an fps hit
I like your stuff but I have one bit of criticism for you. Your channel is Avalanche Reviews yet you've never reviewed a single avalanche. What's up?
Thank god you dropped a vid, I'd off myself if I had to watch G-Man shills garbage take on anything.
Another PS2 classic I missed
What’s that game with the girl wielding that axe at the beginning called?
What games are in the start minutes of the vídeo?
This game has the exact same set up as the movie Doomsday.
Can someone share with us the name of the games shown in the intro?
I recognized Tormented souls, crow country, ???, ???, Signalis, ???
Dread out 2(?)
You will die here tonight (?)
The medium (?) and it's fucking horrible
Somehow you AND boulder punch released vids on this at the exact same time....🤨😂
I got them both too at the same time🤣🤣
What’s the game in the intro of that gal chopping the dude with the axe?
My philosophy degree isnt worthless ok?! Ur not my real dad!!!!!!11
What game is it at 0:28? Thanks!
Dreadout 2
Why is it so hard to come across these awesome games??? Why are they so obscure?
Hopefully this new genre revival will keep picking up speed and games like this will find themselves in the spotlight more often.
its no Signalis. Not by a long shot. Its pretty cheap though and worth picking up for a quick playthrough. One person doing all of this is impressive and hopefully its a jumping off point for them to get into more survival horror work.
Signalis is gay

The minute I saw the trailer, I was WAITING on yo ass to make a video. YESSSSSSSSSSS 😂❤🎉
Unfortunately that backtracking puzzle you mentioned has no answers, only a flamethrower. Also I have no idea how (FUCK those sewers) but I did reach the locked grate at one point after placing the hearts, but said grate was replaced with a fleshy blockage.
th Love letter getting pretty used
Think there us unsolvable puzzles in this game. That might be one of them
Why do all the channels like Boulder Punch and Dungeon Chill release videos on the same game at the same time?
Because that's when the embargo ended.
Holy hell, You, Ragnarox, and Gman all made videos on this game close to each other.
Hey man! If you love survival horror games you should check out Song Of Horror!❤️🔥
I have and I really enjoyed it. Although, there were a few seemingly random mechanics and scenes that kind of bothered me.
I've been HOLLOWeen'd.
(( ̄_|
Hollow-lujah!!
PS5 version when?
This is how games should be done. Not these AAA trash funded by DEI crap.
