Kempff was probably the first man in recording history to produce such a solid and firm tone, use such little amount of pedalling and actually play these Romantic period works well, especially those by Schubert and Schumann. Many other pianists, particularly nowadays, would just play every note too soft and use the pedal all the time to blur everything.

I think Kempff best expresses what's-what atmosphere which vaguely but certainly exists in Shumann's works like this. Other pianists plays such work as this too clearly and distinctly. Kempff plays best subtle shades and nuance of Shumann's emotion. I love this performance.

In what sense was Schumann using the word 'Humoreske' as the title of this work?
