- Mixing and matching can breath new life into old stuff. Works for fashion, works for camera gear also. In this video I pair up the new LEICA M11 with a golden oldie, 1954 Leica 5cm Elmar f3.5 collapsible lens and compare that to another combo, my Leica M-P Type 240 matched with the current Leica 50mm Summilux f1.4 lens.
What can you produce with these combos? Which is more pleasing to you? What are your favourite combos with your equipment? Welcome your comments.

My focus is photography street, nature, landscape, people and adventure travel. A few animals also sneak in from time to time. Property investment and business also get covered to complement the theme of having time and money to pursue your passions, like mine, in photography and adventure travel, 4WD, motorcycle and trekking/hiking, connecting with nature and culture.
thank you for great review. it helped me a lot
Thanks
Great stuff! Exactly displays my own observation using vintage lenses on modern sensors. Great photos and comparisons.
Thanks for watching!
It's always amazing that you can still get decent photos with such old lenses. The apertured beach photos I found quite usable, although here rather the fun and documentation were in the foreground. Nothing for pixel peepers.
👍
I love and appreciate your videos greatly! Have a nice summer! :)
Thank you so much!
That 50 is not at all old. Try going back to the 1930's Leica lenses on a digital M. I have been shooting, of late, with a 1930's vintage Leica 28mm f/6.3 Hektor, Leica's first truly wide lens. Results are rather quite good from my M Type 262 digital M. Never the less, I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.
Thanks for watching and sharing your experience with vintage lenses. Really appreciate your support. Cheers Peter
Always amazes me shooting the "slow" 50mm elmar 3.5 collapsable at night (iso 1600-3200) on an M10-P gives me pleasing film grain/noise. I can pop it off my film MP after dusk and right onto a digital M at night. Dehaze slider on LR for the Elmar helps on daylight digital shots. The focus nub also makes the digital M feel more "analog" too. Cheers!
👍
After shooting for 20 years, I found nobody except me cares about my gears. Lighter set increases the chance to catch the good moments outside studio environment, also, 80% of the elmar characters in this video seems can be fixed by adding a lens hood. If I care about the cost performance ratio, Leica would be the wrost camera I can pick in today's market. Leica means enjoyment. Any Leica you can afford to buy is good Leica. You can't buy this feeling from any other brands out there even though most of them will equal or outstand Leica's performance with much less cost.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.
Does the collapsible work on other digital Ms? Like M10r?
The one's I've tested all work, nevertheless, I always measure the lens collapse before trying out an old lens on modern digital M's.
Nice mixing. How is M11 black paint finish going? Is that durable as they say? Or is there any sign of wear after some time?
The M10-R Black Paint version is holding up well, no signs of wear at this stage. Mind you, I am fairly careful with my equipment. Just picked up an old Leica 35mm Summilux (circa 1970's), good match. I will do a video on this combination.
Please could you do a real world comparison review of the Leica Apo-Summicron M 50mm f2 ASPH vs Leica APO-Summicron 35mm f2 ASPH. I really want to buy one of these.
Would love to do so, anyone out there who would like to loan me a Leica APO 50mm and I will do the review. Thanks for watching.
Some belting shots from both combinations. Logic says M11, my heart says nice black paint Brass M240-P, however I worry that even with an F1.2 lens, the low light performance of the M240 in dimly lit pubs / venues will frustrate. Can you let me know how low you can go light wise with an M240… is 1600 ISO OK? I don’t mind a bit of grain, but banding would ruin the shots. Cheers from a dimly lit Lake District in England, Marcus. PS. If money was no object then obviously the M11 looks amazing as it would double up as Leica’s best landscape camera.
Thanks for watching. 1600 ISO is great. 3200 useable. 6400 banding. The M240 is not good for photographing the Milky Way unless to use a f1.4 or faster lens. Video on a tripod, manual exposure is also good 1080p. Great first Leica digital or 2nd body. Cheers
My choice would be an M11 with a non-Leica lens if I could only afford one or the other.
👍
Please could you let me know which lens henri Cartier used?
5cm lenses were his favourite. He may well have used the f2.8 collapsible version. Thanks for watching.
Use a lens hood dammit.
