So the slim model has a issue with a ribbon cables sticky residue dries and fails which causes the ribbon to poke out and scratch your discs. Good news! The cable is 2$
It's the laser ribbon glue, it comes undone over time so when the laser is moving back and forth the ribbon sticks up too high hitting the disc while it spins, making a perfect circle.
The FAT PS2 scratched five of my discs with a death ring. My slims never did that. The only problem of the SLIM is the power cable: don't remove-attach it too often, or the piece will break.

Never ran into that issue. Though the most common issue with the Original is the Power Supply failing... Much like the Original Xbox with the capacitor issues, the PS2 Phat model also fell victim to Capacitor plague within the Power Supply. It won't leak but it's still an electrical hazard. The only time you will find out if your console has this nasty problem is if the system shuts off after plugging in a HDD.
My uncle had a fat PS2 out of the box that wouldn’t read CD based PS2 games which has the blue back, but would read PS1 games and PS2 games on DVD. Also another story, my friend got a PS2 slim, this was for his bedroom, he had a fat model as well which was in his family room which was a fat model, so at this point he had plenty of games, so anyway, out of the box his slim model wouldn’t read DVDs or DVD based PS2 games, only PS2 games on CD, he was so pissed and I thought it was hilarious. He got it exchanged though so there was a happy ending.
I have the same experience as your uncle! My SCPH-39001 model is great with DVD-ROMs but not CD Roms! My SCPH-75001 model is good with CD-Roms but not DVD roms.
No, it's not about the media, some PS2 games used PS1 cpu to do different instructions, only early slim models had PS1 cpu and it was emulated in the later revisions causing different types of glitches - for example: sound loops in Chaos Legion game.
@thebroskis6364 Yes, it does. I've been doing it successfully for 20 years. All PS1 and PS2 games are compatible with the slim. If you have a game that's not working properly then your disc has a problem. It's not your slim.

I think it came down to economies of scale. The PS2 was so popular, Sony could afford to make the hardware tinier and tinier and cost less to manufacture. Coincided with a time when consumer electronics really started getting smaller, and smaller, and more compact... Compare a similar example: the Sega Genesis which has had MANY design variants over its nearly decade in production, starting from 4 major ICs (the 68k, Z80, VDP and YM2612), going down to 3, then 2, then EVERYTHING mashed into a single ASIC. The console didn't shrink nearly as much, but the PCB shrank. You could tell how much less it cost Sega to manufacture by the end of the console's lifespan. Crazy!
Only the 79000 models won't scratch your systems...and don't comment underneath saying I have 79001 79002, 7900# they're all the same model just different regions, that model will NOT scratch your games, all the others will cause of the ribbon cable.

You can just stick a pin in the back of the disc spot to prop open the door and it wont scratch. The thin plastic can flex and press down. I have thousands of hours played this way, and no scratched discs from the ps2 itself
Honestly, I do remember on the phat model, opening the disk drive and the disk still spinning on its own weight as the CD reader just dropped the disk as it was still spinning and it spun in the tray, leaving a nasty ring around the disk that would not come off. Don't remember what caused that, but others who had a phat PS2 that did that knows the terror of hearing that, and having to just sit and wait for the tray to open fully.
Our original ps2 has been running since the day i bought it (roughly a year after release) and its been played almost daily till this day (gave it to my dad who is 70+ and he loves the old ghost recons, black, killzone etc)
Ive gone thru half a dozen slim Models over the years always have a problem with the laser and disk tray, still got my original fat model from 25 years ago works perfectly still
Seriously? The "fat" model literally drops the disc onto the tray (sometimes spinning if you issue an open command during a time the spindle can't bring the disc to a stop) and you press it against the plastic every time you drop/grab it. How in the world does the "slim" scratch when you're installing the disc straight onto the spindle?
I don’t think the slot on the back is for hard drives. Unless there was more than one use then that slot is for a Ethernet connection pack so you could plug an Ethernet cable in.

about the PlayStation 2 Slim scratching games, I think it only scratches because of the optical reader's flat cable, which touches the disc as it rotates, which causes scratches.

it can be fixed
@@jaytrax34 is there any other method than using that one machine that cleans it? i used water and it does nothing
@@spochysrandomnetwork that’s weird because soap and water always did the trick for me
I’d put soap on it, wipe it around slowly and then put water on it, then I’d wait for it to dry and/or wipe it off. I did that to a copy of SvR 2006 and it started working again!
Yeaah! I always thought _I_ was the one at fault!
That fat PS2 hard drive expansion slot was a great hidden compartment during my teen years. Had zero idea what it was actually for until just now
Didn't have any issues with my Slim. The local dentistry, though, did have a Fat in the waiting area. As a child I thought it was SOOO FREAKIN' COOL.
I just brought a phat ps2 i lost my childhood one years ago. Now I’m collecting all the old games i had as a kid. Trip down memory lane
I still got my PS2 SPCH 30001, still works like a charm havent even dusted the thing out, still rockin 😂
I still have my 30001R version. Had to replace the lens and power caps. It's back on working.
So the slim model has a issue with a ribbon cables sticky residue dries and fails which causes the ribbon to poke out and scratch your discs. Good news! The cable is 2$
I prefer my slim. I still have it till this day working fine , I just need new cords.
I modded my PS2 slim with a 3D printed guard that keeps the laser flex cable away from the discs.
Yeah, on slim ps2s sometimes you will see circle shaped scratches on the outside of the disc.
True…
It's the laser ribbon glue, it comes undone over time so when the laser is moving back and forth the ribbon sticks up too high hitting the disc while it spins, making a perfect circle.
@@TheNamesRyanwhat is the best way to fix that issue if you want to play disc games ?
@@jeff15 there's some 3d print files out there for a clip you can install in the dvd drive to hold the cable down
Psp does same thing
My slim ps2 from 2007 still kicking every time I take it out to play vice city... what a console
The FAT PS2 scratched five of my discs with a death ring. My slims never did that. The only problem of the SLIM is the power cable: don't remove-attach it too often, or the piece will break.
My ps2 slim is the 90 series so the cable is the same as the fat. And if it breaks, i can use my ps3 slim power cable
@@nalendraalif1116 the problem is not the power cable, but the thing where you stick it in
Slim 7000 Series owner here. NEVER had any issues with my discs scratching or my console overheating (my cousin owns a 9000 Series, and his shut down due to overheating multiple times). Ive also had the best PS1 playback from my system. Recently the laser failed, Ill have to replace that
PS2 slim: Massive size reduction to the original.
PS5 slim: Tiny size reduction that's not worth it.
With the original it scratches more
Never ran into that issue.
Clarification needed for the compatibility issue. The slim may have issues reading PS2 games that were printed on CD format (Purple back) discs.
No, it's not about the media, some PS2 games used PS1 cpu to do different instructions, only early slim models had PS1 cpu and it was emulated in the later revisions causing different types of glitches - for example: sound loops in Chaos Legion game.
Had to return 4 PS2 Slims in warranty when they were new.
what about the original being backwards compatible with PSOne games, was that not something that was removed from the slim models?
Forgot to mention that the og ps2 has backwards compatibility
Ps 2 slim does too
All ps2 models play ps1 games.

@thebroskis6364 Yes, it does. I've been doing it successfully for 20 years. All PS1 and PS2 games are compatible with the slim. If you have a game that's not working properly then your disc has a problem. It's not your slim.
PS2 Slim was my first console and I didn’t really have any major issues with it growing up. Well yes it did scratch a few of my discs, but I just loved how small it is, so I was able to just shove it in my bag and take it to a friend’s house.

Never had any issues with my discs, nor have I ever heard of any compatibility issues or experienced them myself. And what exactly do I need expandable storage for?
I also heard things about the laser of the original model being more sensitive to breaking compared to the slim. I think you can make the case of which is better for either console depending on your preference.

Also it’s possible to damage the lid on a slim, and you’d need to put a weight on it so it recognises that it’s shut.
I have that issue with mine
The FAT is better for modding, no doubt
What's strange about the PS2 fat console is that you either bought one that is still lasting to this very day or you bought one that gave up working YEARS ago..
Survivorship bias I guess, I have a super mint 39001 that was thoroughly cleaned by last buyer without any problem, but some more just can't survive due to many factors like misusing them.
I salute your valiant effort to keep PS2 slim prices down for the rest of us.
~~The FDVDB development warrants second thought about the PS2 slim.~~
My Slim doesn't scratch discs, they just don't read them until I try putting it in a few times then they'll work
I have the Slim version, bought it when released, still works and still plays every game. The only advantage of the fat version is the expandable HD.
go to work

You can mod it to install m.2 ssd or microsd card to run the games from it faster than from USB port. Cheers 🍻
@@jeff15how is it installed? If it’s by the USB port, then that’s negligible because USB 1.1 has really slow load speeds (1.5~ MB/s)
Jak x is unplayable in some slim ps2s
The 7500 models had a problem with dual later discs. God of war 2 and gt4 would often get the red screen. It takes several tries before the games work
What he didn’t mention is the PS2 slim is much more reliable and usually lasts far longer
On which regard, exactly? Maybe if you talk about the laser in itself. Other than that, the original 39001 and 50001 models just mop the floor with the slim models.
@@francocavecchia8246 Perhaps he is talking about the disc tray mechanism which is likely to fail over time. I also dislike slot-loading consoles, for the same reason. The best devices are where you can put the disc directly onto the spindle yourself
@@bretton_woodsyea i knew a guy who had to either get a replacement or go full digital for his ps3 cuz it decided not to accept discs anymore therefore he couldnt put any of his games into the system. at least with a ps2 slim or ps3 super slim you put the disc in yourself no fancy mechanism needed. just pop the disc in shut the lid and have at it
back then my PS2 slim only have one problem, its the optic, my little brother just push it because hes curious what that is, after that incident i replace the optic with the new one and still working fine, aside from that ive never have a problem even when this ps2 fall off the table, and ps2 slim could scratch a disc? i never found one tbh, my disc are only scratch because my little brother just like to throw it / rubbing the disc on the floor. im owning the ps2 slim with serial number scph-90006 since 2008 and the chip is already modded when i buy it and i have 0 issue with compatibility.

My slim PS2 had issues reading discs after a few years and it did ended scratching them.. I never was able to fix the issue.
Great use of tekken tag music in the video! That soundtrack still slaps to this day!!
I never had any scratches on mine..never had compatibility problems..bought it new in 2010..still rocks on!🥳🥳
I accidentally spilled a glass of Coke on my Ps2 Slim back in 07, it was brand new too. That thing still works just fine almost twenty years later.
If you can load backups in slim, I’d say in modern aspect the small size more than makes up for the disadvantages
I still have PSone and PS2 superslim console and i am happy😊
Greetings from the Czech Republic and have a nice day peoples🙋♂️🍀🌞
This short has the perfect loop.🙂
Also, it's still amazing how small Sony could make that thing.😮
Certain models of the PS2 Slim can have an expanded hard drive added to it as well.
Easily added? I’ve seen a video about it that is EXTREMELY high risk and very heavy on electrical work.
Owned my ps2 slim for roughly 20 years. Still works good.
And the original PS2 has original PS1 hardware for when you play ps1 games on it,where as the slim has them emulated
Thats worst than the holocaust.
nah only the last revisions of the slim

I've seen those wireless controllers before on eBay, aliexpress, and amazon. Does anyone have em and are they any good compared to official of 3rd party controllers?
Can anyone explain why my copy of Yakuza only works on my Slim, and not my Fat model?
The only issue ive run into with the Fat 2 is that it doesnt run my MVC2 consistently. The slim ALWAYS reads it.
Ive gone thru half a dozen slim
Models over the years always have a problem with the laser and disk tray, still got my original fat model from 25 years ago works perfectly still
Which ps2 slim models do it? I have the one where it doesn't have a rotatable ps symbol
It's for both.
The scratch issue (which not all models have) is fixable with a sticky tape
How do you do it?
@@DiverseTech ua-cam.com/users/shorts90KeUllFmMM?feature=shared
You dont need to Open your ps2 to do it. (At least for the Models which might need the fix because you can reach the Spot much better without opening the ps2. 70004 or lower). There are many Videos which Show the process in Detail.
I would really like to know these supposed compatibility issues in specific.
There used to be a game list on Wikipedia, but it got deleted. Maybe someone reposted it somewhere, or you can use Wayback Machine. Take the list with a grain of salt.
about the PlayStation 2 Slim scratching games, I think it only scratches because of the optical reader's flat cable, which touches the disc as it rotates, which causes scratches.
That’s weird cause I remember having compatibility issues with my Fat PS2. My slim model would play games that my Fat one just wouldn’t.
If there was a hard drive what do we need memory cards for?
the only problem with the fat version is when it stops working and the ejection tray wont open then you can,t get the game out of it
Do I have a PlayStation 2 in the box I never opened bought two one to play with and it still works Kick-Ass
I had a slim silver PS2 back in high school. Loved it. Thinking of getting a slim PS2 and adding it to my collection
I have the slim. my dad said he bought it in 2004 but he wasn’t really a gaming person since his hobby is to DJ so he only used it when his friends came over to play mortal combat. In 2007 when I was born and everyone had kids he said nobody had time to play video games anymore so it has been sitting since but he gave it to me in 2022 to keep my brothers never used it because they’re busy with their Nintendo switch so now I have it hooked up to a crt tv and I play burnout 3 once in a while. However, I need to get the wireless controllers for it one day.
i had a ps2 fat originally but either the hdmi or av port was fried and no audio would play at all so i exchanged it for a slim and i had a lot of memories with it for a few years.
On the slim model depending on model #, can scratch your disks due toan interior ribbon being loose by time. but there is a fix modding to keep that ribbon from being loose. id look into that slim #model amd doing some modding.
