Been painting these for about 8 years now. The main tip I can give is to get the darkest darkest blue you can. You cannot darken blue. If you add black to blue you get grey so you need the darkest blue to start with. You can lighten with white.
I really like the approach you took on the gold in particular; it 'tricks' the eye and makes it read as if the entire surface is gold. Cool stuff as always!
Pete I really loved this video, the conversion one, and the speed painting Night Lord video since I am about to work on some CSM and was planning on making them Night Lords! I also have some cultists that go with them. Could you do a video on how to convert cultist to represent this or other chapters of CSM? Thank you for the fantastic videos!
Provided you're willing to use non citadel paints, I have a recipe of my own design for one particular (Alpha) legion's base colour. Leadbelcher > Vallejo Gunmetal Blue (watered down with Lahmian medium. May not be needed but I always do it) > Biel Tan Green wash in all recesses > Ard Coat to add the shine back and blend the green and blue. Give it a go and see what you think. Hydra Dominatus and for the Emperor.
Hey, I have a small question. My paint collection is currently small, and my tools more so. I have no Airbrush and can only hand paint or Rattle Can. So unto the question Can one use Grey instead of White, when Zenithal Highlighting, because I find that any sort of white areas is extremely hard to cover opaquely?
I love you're content! Keep up the good work 😊 QUESTION :Think there is any way of you making a toturial to the WORLD BEARERS? I have a bunch of chaos space marines liying around and I have no real clue how to paint or covert them 🙄
What I'd personally do with an airbrush is basecoat black, do a zenithal of the darkest Blue GW produces at 60° and then Kantor or Ultramarine from the Top. Leaves the Armour propper dark, so the lighting nonsense can really pöp
I got this guy's still on boxes I haven't painted them yet cause I've been painting Black Templars and imperial fist now after I'm done with the custodes I'm going to start building a loyalist army of them
What’s the ratio of contrast to medium? Like to know as I want to start using contrast in this way. Also, is there any advantage to use contrast medium rather than airbrush thinner?
It's roughly equal parts contrast to thinner. But you can go with more or less thinner to adjust the strength. Contrast Medium maintains that thickness that contrast paints have and simple spread out the amount of pigment without effecting the properties of the contrast paint. Using airbrush thinners, like I did, removes this thickness and makes the contrast paint much more fluid whilst keeping it's high pigment properties.
@@PeteTheWargamer they do indeed paint them blue, I'm not arguing that they arnt a blue legion. I'm just saying that I think they should be darker. If you look at Citadel Base: Night Lords Blue, you will see what I mean. Not saying your paint job is bad Pete and I adore your how to convert series. I just feel like this guy is abit brighter than the nightlords artwork I have seen and the descriptions of them in the novels.
Everyone learning to paint should paint a Night Lord. You have to incorperate so many tricks to make them loog good. Kantor Blue armor and retributor armor on the trim alone looks dull and cartoonish. In order to pull of a good looking Night Lord you need shading, blending, layering. You will find yourself using almost every trick in our book to make this color scheme a success. I recommend everyone try to paint them at least once.

One of the best ones you've done. really love everything about this mini, from the conversion to the paintjob.
That gold is brilliant.
I’ve been looking for a recipe for really old worn gold for a Chaplain and I think this one will be it.

Thanks! It was a bit of an experiment but I think it worked well
I used warp lightning over stormhost silver on the eye lenses of my thousand sons it really popped with a bit of ard'coat on them after the fact.

JCZFootball Aren’t Night lord cultists just flayed chunks of skin? Lol
That's a kick ass NighLord, really does them justice, and simple techniques too. Thanks.
Beautiful painting, loved the video on how you built him
Amazing! This video has encouraged me to try to paint my abandoned Night Lords. You have painted a fantastic figure!
I think this is the best video I've seen for a specific paint scheme. It really looks great!

Hydra Dominatus and for the Emperor.
One of your best conversions yet!👍
Excellent finish to a very interesting model.
Late to the party but this paint job is absolutely beautiful. Superb, mate!!
Looks absolutely amazing
Thank you!
Love it. Was wondering how he would use his little pouch on the right side. 😅
The method u used for the gold I would have never thought of
Thanks, Pete! Ave Dominus Nox!
Im not a minis collector but love to watch your content 👍
You need to do longer videos, you’re very knowledgeable and entertaining
Guilliman is gonna spit his dummy out. Great scheme as always :P
Awesome video!
It's a crime the Night Lords don't have official models
Superb! 🧙♂️
I like the end result but I wonder if it can be simplified even more. E.g. priming the model in blue.
Night lords edgiest group in the galaxy?
Ravenguard wants to know your location
The sweat goblins of Comorah would like to have a word with that
The Alpha Legion already knows your location
Ravenguard aren't edgy just cringe.
@@fuzztsimmers3415 I know but they wouldn't like to hear that.
Yeah I don't know if they're edgy so much as they are sadistic pricks.
Can I use the same glaze layers using night lord blue? Looks awesome man, defo going to use the eye effect with warp lightning.
Question: how much paint vs thinner? I suck at getting the right consistency but it's easier if I have the rough compesation.

You should do a how to convert/paint black dragons next
Please do how to wood elf's lineman I got the athelorn avengers team and I would like some help with it

A Word Bearers conversion will most likely be the next CSM video that I do 🙂
@@PeteTheWargamer so cool. Can't wait to see it 👍 thank you for responding so fast

is it bad that I instantly recognised the ossiarch shield, i think I might like AoS too much
If people can't get with contrast paints they'll never get better as an artist

Street Judges next?
Any specific reason to stick with Kantor Blue over Night Lords Blue now that GW offers that one?
A very simple reason, I don't have that paint 😂
@@PeteTheWargamer That was must first assumption but wanted to verify.
Thx a lot Pete! This mini looks great! I am really excited to test the way you did the metallics *thumbs up* How long did you take for the painting?
It's certainly not the quickest paint job, it took me a probably around 3-4 hours all together.
Why are you not doing voice over work on tv? Your voice is gorgeous
Nice
Whoops! Methinks you forgot to put the conversion vid in the desc
yes finally someone who uses green for the eyes not red.
Do you still remember how many coats of Kantor Blue you painted?
I'm going to have night lords as my 40k legion. Alpha legion is my horus heresy legion.
Haters gonna hate. Contrasts do their job well.
To be the critic, why did you only paint the outside of the wings on the helm instead of the inside also, it looks unfinished like that
Did you paint a Night Lords or an Ultramarine? That's a very bright blue.
It's not even as bright as the Konrad Curze Forgeworld model so I think I'm good.
Pfffft, those vampire cosplayers
I hate the shades of blue, far too bright. But the gold technique is fantastic.
Pete The Wargamer
Great tutorial for ultramarines. But the nightlords are midnight clad.
The blue should be so dark it's almost black.
You should probably let practically every single Black Library/Codex artist know that then because they all paint them dark blue.

give me a good site for warhammer rule 34 pls
Looks really derpy and "batsy" - closer to a clown than a SuperSoldier
