And here I was just worried about traveling during the Olympics! Good to know. That non-stop flight from Chicago to Lisbon is looking pretty good right now.

If you are traveling to Portugal this summer, keep an eye on news sites and your airlines/train/bus bookings to learn if this Schengen issue gets resolved or not.

Yes, the border crossing will be more difficult, and since you can only stay in the Schengen region for 90
Days, this will open Portugal for an easier path to leaving the Schengen and then going back after 90 days in Portugal.

I am coming from US June 8 with a couple hour layover in Lisbon then going to Seville. Question: do I have to go to security and immigration in Lisbon when I get off the plane to go to next flight or do I just walk to the next gate and get on the plane and do immigration in Seville?

You will need to go through passport control in Lisbon, then you will head to your connecting gate for Seville. If you have an electronic passport, "usually" that line is much faster than regular passport control. With that said, if you arrive in Lisbon sometimes before 8am, they may not have the e-passport gates open. If you have to use the regular passport control line, it can take anywhere from 30 min to 1 hour, depending on how many international flights are arriving at the same time. If you feel you will be tight to get your connection, let a representative know as you enter passport control and they can assist to get you to the front of the line.

Sorry you were unable to get a bank account. Portugal is becoming more complicated to move to.

Great information 👍 So looks like the Shengen Shuffle will get a bit easier coming up.
If and when this takes place, do you see the Portuguese government pushing through these issues to get back into the Shengen Zone? Or their past actions and bureaucracy speak more to inability to comply in a timely manner? 🤔

I get the feeling Portugal will not get it done by July 1, but, will be granted an extension. To have all of the flights/trains/buses be stopped in/out of Portugal on July 1, with people having to go to regular customs would be a nightmare for airlines/bus/train companies to manage, let alone passport control in each country. Plus, Portugal cannot figure out a budget and I'm willing to bet there will be another election this year.

Golly. Aren't there armies of civil servants in Lisbon whose job involves ensuring that Portugal *doesn't* get suspended from the Schengen Zone? I do wonder if the problem originally arose from official malice or from official ineptitude. Has Portuguese governance acquired its very own Boris Johnson?

    • @traveltidbitsrus

Makes one wonder how on earth the government would allow it to get to the 11th hour without a resolution. Summer tourism is huge to Portugal, and let's hope cooler heads prevail.

@@traveltidbitsrus , I would have thought that Portugal's government had a severe enough balance-of-payments problem anyway, without needing to make it worse by importing Boris ...

@@robertjamesstove Certainly after announcing a new airport to be built and other major capital expenditures coming, it would seem they would have addressed this issue months ago.

@@traveltidbitsrus, yes, I saw from a different video that Lisbon was going to be acquiring a new airport, although in 2023 I couldn't discern anything wrong with the old airport. So whatever caused the Schengen Zone shemozzle, it can hardly have been excessive budgetary constraint.

@@robertjamesstove The airport itself I think is good, but it needs to ability to expand, to handle another terminal, and even more planes to come and go from Lisbon.
