  • #43 of "365 Days of Plants" is an exceptionally slow growing species of cactus known as Copiapoa hypogaea. This one that I have seems to be growing in an interesting fashion and has been really easy to care for. In this episode I'll go over a little of its natural history, where its from, where I'm growing it, basic care tips and more.

    Your Copiapoa hypogaea is etiolated. A 23 watt 5000K LED bulb with an inexpensive fixture so that you can position it approx 12" above your cactus will take care of FUTURE problems but the existing damage ... I hesitate to say "damage", but ... is done, and will probably never fully resolve itself. As far as fertilizer for cacti is concerned, the majority of members of the forum that I belong to (cactiguide.com) seem to agree that a balanced fertilizer like Dyna Gro All Pro 7-7-7 is the fertilizer of choice, but it's a tad expensive, so maybe not the best choice if you have a small collection. If so, then Dyna Gro Orchid Pro 7-8-6 which is less expensive and nearly the same composition might be a better choice. I highly recommend cactiguide.com ... there are a number of members there that have masters degrees in horticulture, and much, much research has been accomplished regarding cactus cultivation. I HIGHLY approve of your choice of growing medium. Water that you put in a cactus pot NEEDS to run right straight at the bottom and it sounds like yours DOES. Love your video(s), BTW. Growing underground ... when the climate is at its driest, this cactus will retreat until just the VERY TOP is exposed to the sun.

    I love this little guy mainly because of its resemblance to another cactus. The one that if consumed there will be some side effects. 🌈😲💫

    Cute funky looking cactus, I don't do well with cactus, but it doesn't mean I won't still keep trying to find ones that will grow for me, or rather ones that I can make happy. Thanks for this series, see you tomorrow.

    Hi summer.im a big cactus fan,this copiapoa looks terrible to be honest, it needs at least 6hrs direct sunlight in order to keep its normal shape.

    I've watched many of your videos and you always hit the nail on he head, except this time. The reason why those offsets are elongated is because they are etiolated. They should be flat and stubby as the center section , and the color should be more brown than green.

  • @RareCactus
    @RareCactus 4 роки тому

    Great video! Placing it closer to the window will fix the etiolation and give it a nice color closer to its natural color. No need to turn it :)

    Copiapoa is one of my favourite.
    This one’s etiolation is pretty bad. It needs a lot more light, not suited for indoors.
    Thank you for making videos, love and respect from South Africa .
