My tip is be kind to the staff. I always show the staff my photos and people get hit with the nostalgia. They know the cameras are going to a good home and keep me in mind when the next film camera comes in. I only have two thrift stores in my small town so they do keep them aside for me from time to time. Good luck friends

Number one skill, IMHO, is patience. You have to be willing to go to the thrift store five times and see nothing. To browse the local classifieds every few days and find nothing for months. And then sometimes you find someone incredible.
Ive scored a couple cameras at the swap shop at the local refuse recycling center where people leave stuff for others to take so it doesn't go in the landfill.

You get sharp to the clues, and start seeing your detective instincts taking over : 'it is time to dig further or bounce.'...
I went to a thrift store to donate items recently and happened to check out their cameras. Ended up scoring two digicams in perfect condition with boxes, chargers and everything, one digicam in nice condition but camera only, AND some great film cameras. I did notice that the staff looked each item up on eBay and suspect that they have a guideline they were following to determine pricing. Still, I feel that I got some good deals and expect to turn a nice little profit on the ones I end up selling after I test them out. That shop is only open two days/week, so I would imagine it would be great hunting grounds for those aware of the schedule.
One helpful hint. The second time I scored was a brand-new vintage Canon AE-1 program. The camera looked flawless. However, the shutter would not work. Why? It needs a battery to work. I decided to take a gamble and buy the camera. I brought it home and removed the dead battery with a new one. It worked. My recommendation is to bring a set of batteries with you when thrifting. I mainly carry two LR44 batteries and a coin. It does not cover all circumstances, but most.
I mostly go to antique stores since we do not have a lot of thrift stores near me. Don’t always find something I like or actually is priced reasonably. It’s always fun going to thrifting no matter what
The Netherlands is really good for thrifting cameras. I got a nikon d50 with 2 lenses, a bag and two batteries a couple of years back for 50 euros. Last week I picked up a sony dsc H3, a pentax mts 3 and konica c35 for 35 euros in total. Vintage is easier to find, occasionally you'll find a contemporary model but you have to be quick as thrifting is very popular out here!
it's so weird in the UK you almost never see cameras in thrift stores (we call them Charity Shops) - you see the odd lens but not often a decent camera
I've always looked for flm cameras and expired film trift stores in my hometown, but still haven't found anything. I guess that Bulgarian trift stores are mainly focused on second hand clothes and tableware. Here's an advice from me: Another alternative, which is free, is to ask relatives if they still keep film cameras around. This way I managed to get a Kodak S100EF and a Halina 1000 from my godfather and a Chaika half frame camera from my uncle.
And the number of cameras you will find also depends on the region where you shop. I live in a city that's fairly poor so I rarely find anything worth spending money on. My current ratio is about 1 or 2 good cameras every 6 months.
I go to 13 thrift stores in my area about once a month. Most of the time, most of the locations have no cameras. The most common camera I have come across is the Time Magazine plastic junk camera. If I ask the staff if they have any cameras the answers is either NO or I DON'T KNOW.

i found a pentax k100 behind a bunch of glasses and plates just sitting there. It also had a brand new roll of film in it as well. I got it for $100
