  • Grizzly Peak is a popular hike in southern Oregon. On a beautiful early summer day, I decided to hike the entire 5.1-mile trail and explore the origin of the name of the peak. Grizzly bears have been extinct in Oregon for many decades. Was the last grizzly bear in Oregon sited on this peak? Come join me for an enjoyable hike and learn what happened to the last grizzly bears in southern Oregon.

I did not expect Gramps to hit me with the epic cascading drone shots

I’ve read of the last documented grizzly bear being killed in Oregon in the 1930s. I was born at the very end of 1989. Throughout my childhood my father has told me and I’ve overheard him tell others of the time, which I believe occurred in the 1980s, but before I was born, when him and a friend were scouting for elk in the Eagle Cap Wilderness in eastern Oregon. He said at that time the fall bear season started when archery deer and elk season did (now it begins August 1st). Archery season begins late August typically.
They were using a cow elk call and in comes this bear within like 20 yards through the trees. He described it as big, don’t remember the colour he said it was. It put its paw on a log exposing its long claws, had a hump and it stared at them. The bear then began shaking its head left and right violently. Eventually it left the way it came and disappeared in the trees. My dad reported to have told his friend, “I think that was a grizzly” and his friend agreed. He also told my dad “It’s a good thing you had that pistol” to which he replied, “I’d have to push you out in front of me to jerk it out in time” or something to that effect.
My dad said he called the ODFW and spoke to a biologist about what he encountered and was asked to describe it a few times. My dad reported as saying, “Just tell me I saw a big black bear and I’ll believe yah.” The guy from the ODFW said, “Well you probably saw a grizzly bear. A fire crew reported seeing one a couple weeks ago”
My dad replied, “Why don’t you put up signs because in two weeks it would’ve been archery season and I would have shot him.”
The biologist said, “Well you would’ve been in big trouble.”
“Not as big as I would’ve been by sticking a grizzly with an arrow.”
I don’t believe my dad exaggerates. I know he’s been wrong about things like we all have. I know he’s been consistent with the story and knows what a black bear is and has shot multiple of various colors. I know he’s seen grizzlies or brown bears in Alaska.

I do believe he saw a grizzly bear. The people that live in the Wallowa Lake area will tell you there are grizzly bears in the area. I read about the last grizzly in Oregon being killed in 1930, but I strongly believe there are a few left. In 2008, I recorded bear tracks that were too big to be black bear in Mount Howard. I was very nervous because I had my wife and kids hiking with me. The mountain range in Northeast Oregon goes into Idaho, so it's very highly possible they trail through there. And there's plenty of grizzlies in Idaho.

Agreed. Ever notice that they keep going north, further and further away from California?

They are fleeing New Sodom. They're spiritually attuned, as the locals have long recognized.

We've had some reports of Grizzlys here in Southern Oregon from some guys that run dogs and I just recently saw a golden and brown colored bear a big one that run right in front of me down a hill! I never thought they'd make it down here again but seeing some credible reports

How I ended up here... I've had 2 encounters with the wolves this week. The wolves(Silver Lake Pack) live just north west of me and this time of year all the food goes down the mountain and the wolves start looking at the domestic animals as food and their numbers have increased exponentially every year. The bigger black wolves that make my 130 lbs dog look small don't run if you charge them, they look at you like dominoes getting delivered so you have to fire a couple shots. Then I thought we need something that puts the "Fear of God" into these wolves and curb their population explosion like we had in Alaska. In Alaska the wolves keep distant from humans I believe because grizzlies and brown bears will hunt wolves and that makes the wolves respect the size. Anyways, so I'm hoping that they will reintroduce grizzlies here in Oregon in the same areas where they released the wolves. I have heard that there have also been 4 sightings in Oregon around the Idaho border area... good video man. We need bears.

You said Real Foot was killed in the Pilot Rock area. But Pilot Rock is in Northeast Oregon about 500 miles away from the southern Oregon area you're at....

The Pilot Rock in my video is in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument on the Oregon and California border just east of Siskiyou Pass on I-5.

There are many pilot rocks, pipe rock, fish lakes, etc just in Oregon let alone other states.

Any plans to reintroduce them deliberately? Is there not enough space?

Not enough space???? Oregon is bigger geographically than Pennsylvania and New York state combined, and two thirds of the people live in the Portland area, that occupies only four percent of the land. The backwood country here is ENOURMOUS, our largest national forest is the size of Florida and there's enough left over forest land to cover all of Georgia and South Carolina. Not only could we reintroduce Grizzlies successfully here, I wouldn't be surprised if a population was found in the deep Oregon wilderness tomorrow, almost ninety years after they officially went extinct in this state.

@@user-ly9wr8wj5s That is great to know. Never been out that way, so I am glad to hear from people who know the local picture. Do you think that California, though a less extreme case, also has room? Outside the gigantic cities and a good number of medium-sized ones, the California Republic seems to me also to have a lot of wide-open space.
