  • One year after damaging my knee in a motorcycle accident in Mexico, I had Total Knee Replacement surgery. I hope to get back to my active life including riding my KTM 390 Adventure motorcycle. When can I expect to ride again? Here are weeks 2-8 after my surgery.

Keep up the good attitude. It takes a little more time for us to heal than when we were young. My left knee injury was in 1985. I have around 85° deflection with no ability to control hyperextension. I wear a knee brace when I ride my 390 and I feel pain everyday. However, I have not had a total knee (yet). Lol. It will get better. Ride Safe

Glad you're well into your recovery period Bruce, with no issues. Your therapist seems to be very encouraged by your progress. Maybe time to get the maps out and plan a celebratory trip for when you are really confident in your new knee. Take care.

Yup. Start planning that celebratory ride. You’re going to have a lot of riders wanting to celebrate with you. Pick a nice Spring day.

Hang in there, my friend. This, too shall pass. I too, went through the same knee replacement in 2019. The knee now feels good and wondered why I waited so long to have this done. I struggled with therapy due to my muscle disorder that I have. I am only able to move the leg 90° because of it. but the leg now feels great. Also couldn’t wait to ride motorcycles again. Was able to do it in eight weeks out. ill keep you in my prayers, ride safe. Moto Manny.

It takes a good year to completely feel normal again. Good rehab gave me almost comlplete movement back.
I was lucky enough to lay my bike down 13 months after surgery and pop my left shoulder out😢. Finally got the severe tears fixed three weeks ago. You’ll never get hurt sitting on the couch watching tv.
Looking forward to riding maybe in the fall

I’m actually getting my right knee done tomorrow. My biggest fear is that something goes wrong and I can’t ride 2 wheels anymore. Glad to see this it’s encouraging.

Hang in there. The recovery is long, but you will probably be able to ride again. For me, riding does not strain my knee, but getting on and off the bike puts pressure on the knee. Of course, you also want to be cautious of any fall from the bike. Good luck!

If the therapist says it's OK a stationary bike will give you a good range of motion

Watched the vid all the way thru. That's about what I expect and definitely hope for. I look for no miracles. I know it will take time and care. However it has to beat being almost crippled in the current condition. I'm having it done to get better. Not worse. You take care, take it easy but get back in life. Mental conditioning is therapy in it's self. Thanks for taking time to shot and post the vid.

Of course you can ride again. However it takes 12 - 24 months for full knee replacement recovery. Especially at our age. My recovery had complications and I was riding again at 12 months. It's been 22 months since surgery and my knee is still getting stronger and more flexible. Work it! Bicycling is the best therapy for your knee. See ya in the dirt!

I've been riding in Mexico frequently for the last couple of years. Now I can relate to the hazards of TOPAS {the steel speedbumps on the street} especially after the rain. I appreciate your narration when describing the pro benefits of riding Mexico Vs. the more non experienced opinions of peril and inevitable doom. Keep up with your range of motion activity and exercise with your knee. I had the same advice after getting hit on my bike by a drunk driver and breaking my arm in San Diego. Go Man go.

This was a timely report for me. As a new 72 yo transplant to the PNW, I have been working towards getting my DRZ adventure bike ready to ride this spring. We arrived in AZ two weeks ago to visit our kids. The day after we arrived, I tripped on a deck chair, fell hard and suffered a nondisplaced fracture of my left femoral neck (hip). Had surgery last week to pin it. Now suffering all the aches and pains your are reporting especially at night, but at least I can walk again. Will get checked out with by the Dr on Friday and start our road trip home next week. Maybe a senior Adv redezvous some place in north OR should be held as motivational therapy.

Best wishes on rehabbing the knee. That scar makes me rub my own knees, you know, to comfort them. LOL!. My Mom was a nurse and I did some work in EMS so I've always been intrigued by surgeries so I've seen a knee replacement video in all it's blunt detail. I am pretty amazed with the results with patients. You look good and seem to have the right attitude. Thanks for sharing your observations. Please do keep us informed on the progress. Cheers.

Thanks for the update, and despite how you feel sometimes you are making great progress! Yes, get back into those activities you love, but do it with common sense! About two months into my first 'total knee' recovery I was in a remote location and fell about 7 feet from a poorly designed log bridge (boards not nailed down) into a mostly frozen, boulder-y creek bed with my bad knee hyper-extended underneath me. Thought I had totally undone all the progress and may even have to re-do the surgery! Point of my story is that our bodies are resilient! Turns out that I did not break anything loose and although I probably set my recovery back by a month or so, today (7 years later) that knee is strong and pain free (hiked for 3 hours in 4 " of snow two days ago). Keep up the good work!👍

Your post-op experiences are good. I had a TKR in Nov 2021. My first motorcycle ride was 10 weeks later - a couple of hours. I rode a Tiger 800xcx at the time. Knee was very stiff during the ride and at the end. fast forward to last summer - 18-20 months. Riding a Tiger 900 GT Pro and a Kawasaki KLX 300 off road and not hesitant at all when it comes to putting a foot down at stops or during off-road technical sections. Very important to follow the PT and continue strengthening exercise. BTW - I am 70.

Tomorrow is 9 weeks for my TKR, I also have a 390 that I keep in Colorado where we summer. We are leaving in 3 weeks and I hope I will be able to ride the 390. My bike here at home is a Triumph Tiger 900 RP and it is relatively new to me and I don’t plan on taking a chance on this heavier bike until we return in September. Your healing experience sounds very similar to mine, i will be 69 this fall and overweight and out of shape but hoping the new knee will motivate me to be more active and get in better condition. I am doing PT 3 days per week and the PT days make for painful nights but I can feel the stamina and balance improving with every session. Thank you for your video, it was very informative and inspiring.

Keep up the PT. At 6 months, I still have pain if I overdue it, but riding my 390 is not affected and I'm walking easier as time progresses. Best wishes on your recovery.

Hope your having a good day with your recovery. I have had some major leg injurys. I do alot of therapy still. Probably will always. Just started swimming 2 times a week , which has really helped my elbow bursitis . I fractured 3 ribs on a bicycle get off. And my chiroprctor recommended all the swimming . She was right. Probably never stop doing 🏊‍♂️

Highly recommend you wear knee braces. I use POD K4's ever since I had a severe motorcycle accident in 2017, dislocated left knee and broke lots of bones tore ligaments. Did not have surgery, knee is mildly unstable without brace. Knee braces are key to preventing another injury. Very inexpensive to prevent injury and keep your knee replacement from becoming a disaster. For me the POD K4's fit perfect and do the job.

Thanks for the tip. Right now, I wear O'Neal external knee pads. They add protection but not stability. I'll check out the POD K4s.

I am hoping the pain goes away, but I also realize for many, some pain persists, and the replaced knee does not act like a real knee.

I found that the opioids the doctor prescribed had little effect. In desperation I tried over the counter Aleve and it worked. After 12 years I still take naproxen (Aleve) as needed. I have pain all day but it’s worst as soon as I go to bed.

hang in there neighbor ! those darn doctors can hurt you more than any motorcycle ever could ! I don't trust them one bit ! but now that you have....do what they say even if it hurts!
when they say stretch it they mean stretch it ! and yes it will hurt but if you don't it will never get back to where it should be ! I learned this from my mother she had the cartilage removed from her left leg and was crippled the rest of her life because of it. but she walked like a normal person after about a year. but she did not jump anymore if she did it was with only one leg ! stretching is hard but very important it's painful though...so gird up your loins and get it done buddy ..... glad it's you and not me ! hang in there !

Just don’t get ahead of the new knee mate. The tissue supporting the joint needs to be restored and pampered in equal measure. I used a ladder as part of my rehab, my gutters had never been so clean. Up and down, up and down…Accept the discomfort and count your blessings and you’ll be right as rain before you know it. Just a thought, ditch the KTM and get yourself the new Himalayan…just kidding. Kia Kāha (stand tall).
