One test of a strategic wargame is whether real-world military expertise and planning translates to the virtual space. We invited Lieutenant-Colonel Conny Hansen of the Swedish Armed Forces to play Hearts of Iron IV in our studio so he could get the measure of Paradox Development Studio’s newest grand strategy wargame.
In this short video, you can watch Lt. Col. Hansen plot an American war strategy that puts the Pacific theatre first. What will await him when he finally looks across the Atlantic? And stay for his final verdict on Hearts of Iron IV.

I love them, actually. They are one of the things which caught my attention when I discovered HoI3.

If I'm playing a multiplayer game, and I run into this guy, I have one option, that is quit the game and head to another server before I get crushed.
I do not know who this person is, but the fact that he is an officer... does not mean that he should be a great player. If it was the case, then a professional soccer player could easily beat anybody in FIFA games.

You do not take a very important factor into account - people are not robots. If they were, then I would totally agree with you, but in real life there are so many things which relevant to many professions, such as education (or training), level of fitness, teamwork, tactics, mental preparation, work under stress - all this must be taken into account when comparing individuals into certain... jobs (or whatever you call it) - and virtual machine simply cannot offer it, therefore experience in real life gives zero bonuses when it comes to computer simulation.

@@DerWizard games derive from real life and knowledge that is put into the game derives from real life so saying people enter a game with zero experience is entirely wrong. When I played games as a child I would find it more difficult and that is because of a lack of experience and knowledge of real life, not because I didn't practice 360 quick scopes.

Swedish arms industry is one of the biggest in the world and their Army is small but modern and highly capable. They don't need a bigger one since their friendly neighbor, Finland has the largest army in Europe and in any potential war they would so most of the fighting on land.
Now all we need is a 1v1 between two real Generals in HoiIV.
I really want to see a video/stream of a full game done my military officers like this, I feel like it'd be really entertaining to watch.

There's a huge advantage humans have when playing war/strategy games like these. They don't need to think of every division as real people. If they would, every move would be way more cautious

I would really love and honored to have him as an advisor in my HoI game.
No hate, but i have some serious issues with that game.
- Only 6 Types of recources. I mean.. No coal. No molybdenum. Really?
- You cant ask other nations for help if you get attacked. Nor you can ask for Lend & Lease.
- The Allies just hate you for being fascist and never let you join the allies, even though the russians have taken germany already in 1941..
- No Air Resupply for encircled troups??
- The tutorial is totally unfitting for new players. Without UA-cam, the HoI-Wiki and friends, i'd never got a hang in this.
- Historical AI is on.. Japan joines the Axis and then declares war on the USA in 1938.. WTF!! Or Germany declares war on russia while they havent even attacked Poland yet.. the AI tends to do really dumb mistakes.
- And.. the game seems to crash way to often in Multiplayer..
Serious criticism without any hate. Rather the opposite. I really like this game. But i am kinda disappointed about these major flaws.

I think they will vastly improve the gameplay of this game over the next 12 months. Europa Universalis 4 had issues after it was released, and the game has since improved immensely. I, for one, am glad this game has been simplified, I could never get into HoI 3, it was just too daunting. I hope they continue to tweak this game, like they have EU4.

What I love most about HOI4...the music, everything else might frustrate me, but the music makes me wanna stay and keep going.

Rick 1998 He's just telling the truth. The AI is so bad in this game, that it makes the gameplay almost completely unenjoyable. There are huge mistakes in this program, and I really don't know why do they put so much energy and money into the marketing instead of developing the game itself towards a better version with good AI and everything...

They probably buffed him up so that he had no chance of failing for the purpose of this video.
Or they made him "look like he is buffed" but in reality he isn't even playing the game.
Lets be honest, even experienced gamers starting on hoi4 has a hard time of playing it until at least 2-3 matches after, this guy wouldn't do great even with that much buffs, doing a naval invasion? Maybe, but using paratroops? I don't think so, you should convert to or train paratroops then have air superiority then have transport planes THEN you can use your paratroops, that's too complex for a starter to figure it out himself, maybe he eventually does figure out but it wouldn't be his first match.
My teammate in a mp game today (UK, 15 hours, invited nobody but me, france, to allies) called me crap cuz I got overrun in 1941. I was fighting germans in belgium, on the maginot, italy, nationalist spain, and and in africa. That is 5 fronts. Of course I lost. They were all player controlled. The new players of hoi have no ide aof the intensity of fighting on multiple fronts.
