They don’t scare as much as they just make me feel uneasy. It’s like I’ve never been there in my entire life. But it feels like I’ve been there at least once. It’s a strange feeling
Can’t really connect. I grew up in Australia and it looks very American so that’s probably why lol
deja vu, i've just been in this place before.
I hate working alone at my job doing dish's at night in the kitchen, cause when that happens i always get this feeling like something not quiet right or something is watching me lol.
Yeah.
Also usually there are lots of people there and now there aren't any. Like they shouldn't be there and neither should you.
I'm not scared of being alone. I'm scared of who is with me.

I was literally just wondering why liminal spaces are so weird. I've also been in a liminal space. When I was younger I went to a church at night with a friend. We went after everyone left and turned off all the lights. It was weird walking empty corridors going room to room

Fun fact: the fog in SH1 was not originally intended; it was a way around limitations. The PS1 couldn't handle rendering that much town, so they implemented the fog to hide the unrendered portions. It was a genius workaround, as it adds a lot to the feeling of isolation.
Liminal space gives me the same feeling as if I was in between reality and purgatory. Dreams give me a very strange feeling of liminal space and I think it’s because our brain skips developing character and life to a scene, leaving them bare and giving you a sense that something is lacking here.

The weirdest experience I've had was when I left my hotel room and i was greeted with the presence of a child's bed in front of the door. I looked around for the person who put it there but the corridors were empty, with nothing except me and a child's bed. It was kinda scary, but mainly weird.
So that hotel corridor image triggered that memory and i feel so weird now, thanks
whenever i forgot something in my locker at school and went back to go get it, i always felt extremely uncomfortable walking through the empty halls that were usually full of people. it felt weird to be alone - i felt out of place. since i’ve learned about liminal spaces and the concept of the backrooms, it makes a lot more sense that i felt this way.
Complete with scary music, these send chills down your spine.
I will make a VR game that has suspenseful music and the further you get into the game, the more distorted the music gets, and the screams and shouts are louder, The text becomes more glitched and such, The roads have broken down cars with nothing and nobody in them, nearing the end, the visuals are all glitched and distorted including the music to the point where you can just hear distorted screams and horrifying music, the last room is an endless void, no music, no screams, no sounds, it's endless, you can't even hear your own footsteps...
Ever since I was a child, I’ve had these weird lucid dreams or “visions” while trying to fall asleep, in which I see oddly familiar places I know I have never been to that make me feel either at peace or scared in a way I can’t even describe. The worst ones are places so big yet devoid of any furniture or opening, I feel like I’m being swallowed by the room even though I have plenty of space to move.

I literally got back from my janitorial job at a high school and I was in a very isolated part of the school and that is, by definition, a liminal space lol
I’m making great content if you wanna see it
Is it creepy? I work at a liminal space with some eerie features.
I like these type of stuff just imagine being in one of these areas. Yeah sure the world is dark and gloomy but it’s full of curious stuff to find
Usually when I see a playground devoid of children and in ruin, I get the same feeling whenever I see a used or broken children's toy on the side of the road. I have no name to the feeling both give me, it's kind of a mix of grief and guilt. Knowing that those items and places kept a lot of children entertained and happy, seeing them abandoned and devoid of childhood innocence. It's just... sad.
I’m late, but I know why we fear these liminal spaces. These spaces, once bustling with life, now devoid of it, make us think of the crowds that had gathered in them. We expect life to be there, but know there is none. This gives us an eerie feeling, like being watched, because we look for life, but find none. It gives a feeling devoid of hope, dread taking its place, because we often can’t help but think, “What happened here? Why are there no more people? Where have they gone?” We are social creatures, used to being around others, especially in places like these. For some, that feeling of there being life around us may not fade when there is none, fueling the fires of paranoia and fear. We know people were here, but we feel like they still are. All these questions, these feelings, this paranoia, it all drives fear into our souls. We are forced to fear these tranquil places by our instincts, telling us that we need to leave, that the other people are gone so we to must go. It scares us because we want to see other friendly life, life we can relate to and share time with. Liminal spaces hold this feeling, and it is the reason why we fear them.
I don’t know if this makes any sense, I’m just trying to organize my thoughts. Thanks for reading, if you did

But at that time i was hungry and needed aomething to eat so i grabbed a few sausage rolls and a can of coke and hoped to be on my way but i swear as soon as i turned that corner i saw..something.
It was tall..i think and grey and looked weird i never saw its face but it wasnt human it was twitching way too much to be human i headed to the checkout and paid for my stuff i dont think it saw me but im sure ot heard me i looked round to check and it was just stood in the window i still didnt see its face. I know what your thinking it was just an employee but there was 3 people there stocking up in the early hours and i saw all three of there faces...so..what was this thing that i saw ive never seen it again but id never set foot back in the shop at that time again..

I didn't read the title so at the beginning I thought he was just talking about empty rooms
I mean kinda?
I mean, he is
The scary thing about these spaces is that it makes you think, that how empty your life can get, if everyone and everything in your life could disappear in an instant or over time, it always reaches the same point. And there is nothing anyone can do to stop it its inevitable.
I'm glad there is a term for these spaces now. Back in 2001 I was working a construction night shift in a massive single floor office building that housed about 1500 employees during the day. Most of the offices were cubicles so you could see through most of the area of the space. It was a little bit strange seeing this place that is supposed to be full of life in a state of being devoid of life. But I got over it rather quickly. I think career office workers are the people that get their brains buzzed at the thought of that emptiness, they see their spaces during the day full of activity and then they see them without any signs of life. During the COVID shutdown I was asked to take a shift at night for security on a 500,000 sq ft building and I walked that building alone every night several times. I liked being in that space alone. I like the idea of liminal spaces because they are fascinating to look at, but they are just places that aren't being utilized.
Never clicked that fast.

The whole concept of "creepy liminal spaces" seems as very western-oriented, I think. Here in Russia (or, more generally, I guess in all former Eastern Bloc countries) we've got things like Brutalist architecture, the "famous" Khrushchyovkas, and buildings of Brezhnev-era stagnation, that lacks any personality, aestetics and care for human comfort. In general, soviet-era city-planning leave no place for people to actually live, you're treated by them more like a unit moving from one place to another. That's liminal space on the scale of the city. Soviet Era is gone, ofc, but traces of it are felt to this day (again, I guess in different places it hits on different scale). We constantly exposed to empty "uneasy spaces", and kinda tolerant to it, I belive. Or at the very least they hit us on a different level.
And another thing - all late-period soviet-era buildings looks kinda the same. And all districts in city planned the same way. And all towns and cities are the same. Streets share the same naming stucture, populated by the same-looking buildings, with same interiors. That's intentional. Why would you even need otherwise? What are you, bourgeois? Even in Soviet era it was played up in comedy "The Irony of Fate", where drunken guy accidentaly fly to Leningrad, and beliving he is still in Moscow, took taxi to the place with exact same adress, wich looks the same, and uses the same key - he get in, fell asleep, and later was found by real apartements tenant (wich is young woman, ofc, and that sparks the main plot). So there is little-to-no nostalgia about some place you might seem once, because nothing memorized, because nothing is unique :/
Like, look at that playground at 3:23. It isn't eerie, it's just part of natural east european landscape. I'm actually know place that look very similar in ~10 minutes from my home. Alongside others pictures displayed, which is clearly more western-looking structures and looks kinda alien to me, it feels almost cozy. Like home :/
Agreed. Western people in general assume their existence is a default experience - maybe because they do not have compare their lives with someone else's, but, that is how things work. I find many of these images calming - I enjoyed staying in empty rooms at school or wander around "zabroshki" because I do not like company. There is some interesting quality to them, but I do not percieve them as uneasy or spooky. I guess growing up in an era of desolation and fall of quality of life does that to you. But, I am intrigued at what people here, or in other places and times, would percieve as eerily nostalgic.
This kind of liminal space isn't like an Asian interior design, so it doesn't feel notalgic of comfortable
I'm American too. That Western default experience is an important point and one I was considering earlier, so I'm glad someone brought it up. I did briefly think of Pripyat when I saw that playground photo (different place; same 'vibe'), and all its abandoned flatblocks. And I explored the Backrooms wiki levels' photos and their descriptions. The interior ones were so often from Western design concepts. The outdoor levels lacked stuff like baobab trees, or rice fields, or buildings with distinct India or East Asian architecture. Backrooms are a 'universal' concept; the representation was far from that.

My parents owned a restaurant and on Friday nights we would have bands come and play some music. We would often close super late, like at 12 or 1 AM. I was on cleaning duty so I would usually be the last person to leave. The feeling of being in the restaurant alone that late at night after everyone else had left always gave me an uneasy feeling. Some nights I would play some music through the speakers to not feel so alone, but man, those nights when I didn't play any music... the sound of nothingness was almost suffocating. Sometimes I swore I heard like a whisper or someone breathing behind me... And also, even when I did play some music, something still felt off.

Before I knew what the backrooms were, I dreamt I was in them. I remember trying desperately to get to the highest levels to escape. As I got higher and higher, the hallways began to get more unnatural, randomly narrow or wide, horizontal splits in the ceilings, and oh yeah, more monsters to hide from.
Great video. Billy styler is Just an amazing narrator.
For me it also makes me think of things like car parks, dark, devoid of other people, but possibly holding dangerous ones. Nothing is so full of danger as a place that's empty, and all that.
I always get a strange feeling looking at these luminal spaces...it’s like somewhere I’ve been before but it’s almost dream like to me...it’s almost like places forgotten in time

I remember a large gym area that had a lot of plastic toys such as dollhouses inside at an old school I went to. It was strangely eerie and ominous, because the lights were off. It felt like something was watching me from the vast and empty shadows. Not to mention, that school was mostly empty, so everything felt so creepy to be around, even in the hallways, like something's always behind you.
Billy styler just the way he narrates gives me the chills
The gym picture reminds me of my family going to a school with my cousins inside already to see them play basketball, also playing with them too.The gym was big and after all of that while leaving, i had thee thought of how it will look like if you where alone there nobody with you. That gave me the shivers.
I've always kind of liked the feeling of loneliness you get from these.
I used to walk around the mall when it was about to close. No one was around (besides the occasional janitor), it was just the old mall, the echoing quiet music and me.
You have a great voice and narration

Liminal spaces evoke the same feeling as the fear I had as a kid, and still kinda have now. The fear of playing some 3D creative game, like Zoo Tycoon 2 or Minecraft, and some object or entity appears that I didn't put down, or some hyper realistic image appears. To this day when I open up Zoo Tycoon 2 and look around a completely empty map, I have to shoo away the thought of some random, hyper realistic entity, or even just a normal game asset appearing without my input
