  • Though "Spider" John Koerner originally moved to Minnesota to study engineering, he is now known in the state and around the world for his incredible interpretations of music ranging in styles from psychedelic R&B to the blues and Americana. His first recordings were collaborations with blues artists Dave Ray and Tony Glover. Since then, he has performed throughout North America and Europe and has become a champion of the traditional American folk song. In this segment, we'll hear "Spider" John Koerner play "Phoebe" and "Delia's Gone" and hear why the artist loves to play traditional American songs.

I saw John in the 70s at "Alice's at Avaloch" and in either the late 80s or early 90s in Cambridge, Mass. It's hard to describe how important and mesmerizing he was. So quiet and yet so intense. All I can say is rest in peace and thank you so much for what you gave to us.

when his guitar with the word "Gretsch" mis-spelled on it was stolen in 2003, I recovered it and his amp for him. Really a nice guy.

RoadieRon I thought it was the Epiphone that was stolen?

T4TEXASTOM JOHNNYCAT I’m not so sure, but I was under the impression that it was his Epiphone in this very same video that was stolen at one point in time. He’s played that guitar for the past 45 years so why randomly switch to a Gretsch in 2002?

I talked to him about that guitar. He was playing g it at the 400 bar. He said it was kind of hacked together.

John is a national treasure. I am lucky to live in the same town as him and have seen him at least 200 times over the years.

While I was in grad school at the U of M (1967 - 1969), I used to go to the Triangle Bar and listen to the great blues music. I saw Spider Koerner, Dave Ray, Tony Glover there quite frequently (always individually, never together) and they were great. The whole West Bank had a different character back then than now. Occasionally, there were free concerts in the park. Great memories.

The performance by "Spider" John Koerner at the 1963 Newport Folk Festival performing "Spider Blues" was absolutely incredible. It's a crime that there's only 35 seconds of video of it available on UTUBE.
    Happy 80th Birthday, "Spider Man".
    THANKS FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO.

I like Spider John Koerner the 4 plus minute MN ( Minnesota ) track of his comments, and as well his singing and playing. As far as I know, John Koerner is doing an authentic thing, and is able to well plot his own course, singing and playing songs he chooses.

Still have Tony Glover's harp tute book. Thank goodness these gents did what they did - kept true American music alive for all the beanheads these days, if they have the sense to hear the truth. Wonderful production sound and vision here for this.

Spider rocks! I love "Phoebe", but I'm sort of surprised they didn't feature his hit original "I Ain't Blue" co-written with Willie Murphy and made famous by Bonnie Raitt.

I had the Blues Rags & Hollers, Lots More B,R&H, and The Return Of K,G&R albums in the sixties. I wonder if John still has the 7 string that he played on those albums and if he ever plays it these days. I wonder if Roger McGuinn ever gave him credit for inspiring his seven string.

I wonder if spider John was a friend of Bonnie Raitts brother that passed away in 2009?
I also know for a fact he was over and the Minnesota area open till 2005 along with Willie Murphy who just died also in 2009
