Since there are 9 of them, you could consider something like a triad for each 3-string set: E-G-B, A-C-E, D-F-A
    Just a random idea.

Tune it all to D open and tune the strings in such a way you'll have the right tension. If you tune it to open you just make a D major chord using the notes D, F# and A.
    EDIT: or any open tuning.

I right now found that the guitar strings has some good tensions at some random open chord. Not sure which one but the strings are from low to high ( C E B E G B C D then another D because I haven't come that far to try lowest string. is this like open E minor or something. But basically open tuning overall seems like good approach.
Should the bass section also be open? not sure how to make them vibe with each other. If anyone can chime in

@@MattiasKrantzshorts I think chords in the lower register (open strings included) don't really sound good on bass because the harmonics tend to clash more and the sound becomes muddy. Maybe try tuning them in fifths like a cello?
Generally the lower the register, the wider the intervals in the chord need to be to sound clear

@@MattiasKrantzshorts I would say Open C might offer you some advantages. GCGCEGCECC or some cursed shit like that, common thing to do in indie folk music because you get a great sound on melody parts with the unison top end, but I don't know if you'll be able to play it with the same laziness on this type of guitar tbh. You probably know better than me if open tuning will work with the other strings going on as well. If you can't reliably mute that section, it will ring all the time because of sympathetic vibrations.
For low strings it might be better to keep a drop d situation on your lowest strings, especially if they are likely to happen at the same time. The only open tuning I have ever seen anyone reliably use on a 7 string is GCGCGCE. To spice things more than a C triad, you could try adding higher D's or B's, if either of those seem to work well, and possibly a very low F to use when u go to a 4 chord. DAEAC#E for example is just an A chord with a 4 on the bottom, but that might be muddy and useless on this setup.

For the guitar section, there’s a kind of obscure tuning for 8 string classical guitar, called Brahms guitar. You raise the first string to A, then descend through standard guitar tuning. The 8th string is tuned to B. With your ninth string, you can either use djent tuning (their 8th string) and make it F#, or go with lute or Narcisso Yepes tradition and go down by a second.
So either F#, B, standard tuning then A; or standard tuning with B, A, G below

Another thing that might help is in the bass section, a standard tuned bass should be tuned to E1, A1, D2, G2 (low to high). Additionally, for the 2 lower strings (if you want to keep the standard bass tuning) you can tune them to B0, F#0. Though you did mention that it has a longer scale length so there is more tension in the strings than what a normal guitar would have. So that tuning might not be possible.

I dont think its a terrible idea to tune the higher strings in unison, could give sort of a 12-string vibe. Could also go with having the top three being E-B-E which would also give some of thoes unsion vibes but also make it possible to play som triads on them. As for the bass part im pretty sure the tuning goes from E1-A1-D2-G2 and not E0-A0-D1-G1, dont know if you missspoke but that could be the source of the tention problem, but if you want a tuning similar to what you have now i would raise the highest string so you have B-1-E0-A0-D1-G1-C2 (makes more sense for bass). Most guitars with more strings add notes on the bass instead of treble. I would do something like C#F#BEADGBE. For the bass I would do something similar, keeping with 4ths. Of course, you could also do a nice open tuning that would make anything you play sound nice at least in one key. I don't know how many strings you have in total. One I've been using a bit lately is FACEGB for guitar. This is simply alternating major and minor thirds. The smaller intervals would help with your string issues as well, dealing with getting either too thin or too thick. Perhaps for the whole thing, something along the lines of DFACEGBDFACEGB repeating could create some cool sounds.

The regular bass guitar tuning is E1, A1, D2 and G2. You tuned the other string to G1 anyway on a thicker string. If you think the tension is too low, then just try using thicker strings for the bass guitar. The regular bass guitar tuning is E1, A1, D2 and G2 anyway. For E4, if you're worried the tension is too much, try using different materials for the higher strings like titanium and you can maybe go higher than E4.

Now set up the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st. strings from each set as you would a 12 string guitar. That is - place the 3rd, 2nd. and 1st. strings of each set in pairs, this 9 string guitar will have a heavy gage 3rd. string on its 6th. string, a 2nd heavy gage on its 4th. string, and a heavy 1st on its second string, while the light gage 3rd. goes onto its 5th. string, the 2nd light gage on its 3rd string, and the light gage 1st. onto its 1st string. I hope this is helpful - From Israel.

I play a 5 string base. Tuned low for metal. I tuned my lowest string for A0. 16hz. From there it makes sense to cover as many octaves as possible while keeping complimentary notes within fingers reach. Tune it to an "open string" tuning all the way around in a single key so that you can play many of the notes open which also might make the rotating playing easier as you could just rotate with a pick on the string for a cool tune.
If going this way look at what key you want stuff. I'd probably recommend D mostly because that is a key with tab for the Axis of Awesome 4 chords song. There is also dadgad tuning which is the open string tuning I have had the most exposure. G and C are other 'common' guitar and base standard tunings
Another way to identify what is possible it to look at what the limits of your strings 'are' and decide a key from within its limitations. Or just identify two songs you want to fiddle with that sound good in a shared key.

    Well played.
Honestly, having 3 the same could be useful for tremolo. It's worth a lot more on a guitar than a piano, since it can be fretted.
There's also an instrument called a "tremolo harmonica" which adds a slightly out of tune note on either side (flat and sharp) to deliberately summon the wavy out of tune noise, so you could try something like that. Maybe you'll fall in love with it and it and build a new genre of gattling guitar music around it.

You can try tuning it to smaller intervals. There are tunings where you can have the G string tuned G and the B string tune to A (so a major 2nd instead of a major 3rd). Maybe you can chose a nice chord with extensions and tune it up to this chord. For example EMaj13. So the tuning (for the guitar part) would be E-G#-B-D#-F#-G#-B-C#-D# for example. You can do something similar for the Bass.
You can also try tuning up to triads as some else suggested. In any case, the solution has to basically be to tune the guitar/bass in smaller intervals. Instead of perfect 4th, you can try minor and major 3rd or something like that. The price to pay is that you won't be able to use regular hand shapes for chords but everyone who plays in altered tunings are accustomed to that

Okok here's one way to look at it: How about for the guitar-section, you go for a merge between standard tuning and DADGAD, for instance by doing BEADGBEAD, meaning you're adding the two top strings from DADGAD, but not the lower D. Alternatively, you could switch it around, so it becomes: BEADGADBE. Also, you're saying that doing normal bass tuning gives the instrument too little tension, but in the video, the bass-section is tuned much lower than a bass normally would be - the brightest one (B) sounding a flat sixth below the actual brightest string of a bass in standard tuning. I'd give another go at standard bass tuning! One potential issue with doing the bass-section normally though, would be that the pitches of the strings "reset" once you enter from one section to another - meaning that the pitch of the strings jumps up when transitioning from guitar to bass (Guitar's low B, up a low sixth to bass's high G.) Hope it works out!

Of course you can't put on a regular capo, but you could mount an isolated nut on, say, the 5th fret, and then on the 12th fret for the highest string -- giving you two more fourths. Alternatively, you could tune down your whole 7-string section; e.g., from B-E-A-D-G-B-E down to G-C-F-A-Eb-G-C, and then tune the two highest strings up to E and E (for some unison playing).

I don't know if I would recommend going higher with the last two, just because of string tension reasons.
I would have your thinnest string be the guitar high E, then your three thickest strings each either be five semitones lower or tuning them to bass E A D.
Don't see much benefit to going higher, you could tune the thinnest string five semitones up and then treat the rest of the guitar like an 8 string, but years of snapping thin strings tells me the tension will be way too much.

You could try a 're-entrant tuning' of sorts. Above the high e you could have a and d on the lower octave.

Depends what you want to do with it. In the music im familiar with, I would go for 9 string tuning, which is C# F# E A D G B E, so if you want 2 steps down, you can do B E A D G C F A D.
If you want to do some thing nicer, many people recommended open tunings and triads and others. 9 string is probably easiest and the most straight forward, but there is so much potential to do something more.

For the bass try B E A D G, that's a typical 5 string tuning, I'd start from the top with the strings as you're tuning so start with High E and work backwards until you get to the 7th string and use B for the 7th, F# for the 8th and G# for the 9th.

Looks like a Gatlin Gun. And you can tune that string to a high E.
    An 8 string guitar is tuned F#, B, E, A, D, G, B, E. All fourths, with the exception of the B string.
Looks like you can play that with a bow as well.

I think you should just do an open tuning that just has the high E string tuned down a bit. Open tuning would also help with playing something like that and help make it sound more musical.

Change the strings to fit a 9 or 8 string guitar and have only one or no strings higher than the high E
For an 8 string, the 8th string would be tuned to a low F# if it was standard if I recall correctly (lower than the low B)

Perhaps there should be a "high gain gatling" mode where the only string that is electronically in circuit is the one within the bounds of a narrow angle (aka: where the pick is). That would clean up the string noise through a distorted amp. You could widen it for power-chords/dyads. If not (aka: all strings piped through the circuit), then this weapon would be practically useless for metal unless you zip-tie foam over the nut.

Perhaps like a 7 string guitar in A standard? ADGCFAD. Maybe even A flat or G tuning.
That would give you more room to tune the higher strings

If the idea is to also play the guitar by just letting the motor run and holding something against the strings, then maybe tune all strings so they can play together without any fretting, for example have all strings be a note of D major.

    1. Tune the two additional guitar strings to B and E - the same octave or lower! It'll allow for momentary unison/octave coupling.
    2. Since we have all the notes we'll ever need, we may divide the guitar section into two. First half tuned in fourths/regularly, the second in fifths, like cello.
    3. Guitar's top three/four strings are usually the "shred"/melody strings, so tune them so. Then do whatever you want with the rest.
    4. Check the Charango, it's got very bizzare tuning.

I'm not an engineer, but I do have a degree in music. My thinking is that trying to use standard tuning is maybe just not an option with your design, and there is no need to limit yourself to the standard of a completely different instrument (sure it's still a guitar, but...). Worse, two completely different instruments. I would find a tuning that allows you to space the strings out in even intervals (since you're using guitar strings that really are designed to be tuned in 4ths, start there) so it's easier to play. If you need thinner strings look into those for a twelve string guitar, I'm not certain but I think they use thinner gauge strings. I would advise against keeping those strings as they are and tuning them the same as the highest. Ergonomically it doesn't make much sense to me to have strings tuned the same (therefore definitely supposed to be played synchronistically) spaced that far apart. It's a lot of effort, but you could also remove the frets from those two strings' positions to justify them being there.

I am not 100% sure what the tuning you need is, but I have a good way of doing it algorithmically.
Tune the "thinnest" string to the highest note that makes sense (probably a whole note). Tune the thicker strings in perfect fourths all the way down. I think that gives you can octave on the 7th string, so it will feel like guitar but the intervals won't get confusing as you spin. Lets ignore the fretless section for now, because it will just copy the bass.
If you can, perfect fourths from thinnest to thickest would be best if it needs to feel like guitar, but I think unlikely to be possible with the right tensions.
More likely, you'll tune the thinnest to the highest comfortable pitch, then descend in thirds. This seems possible with the tensions, but your guitar shapes will collapse. You have enough strings that I think sticking in narrow interval ranges makes sense. This video is something like what I'm recommending ua-cam.com/video/MhGpa1j2KBY/v-deo.html

Since there are so many strings, tuning it somewhat harp-like at the top end of the guitar section could be interesting with the lower part of it used for playing chords. As far as the lower bass section goes, I kind of think of it like the harp guitar with a lot of open note bass strings that are scalar just like the top end of the guitar could be. The fretless bass section should just be normal bass tuning in my opinion.
