    The most dystopian thing I can think of is the fact all the things I thought wouldn't or even couldn't happen were already happening, I just didn't know about it...for example internet was supposed to lift up human consciousness, social media was supposed to connect people. Now the collective IQ dropped and people are more lonely and disconnected than ever...

    @ 22:25. I live in Canada. It's not illegal to call someone fat. There has been debate about whether discriminating against someone based on body size should be illegal. An example: charging someone more for a seat because they take up more space or firing someone because they gained weight and don't project the image your company wants. But no one is going to get arrested for calling you fat here.

    The most dystopian thing I hear nowadays;
    “There are people that are actively hunting and killing you because of your race, religion or lack of, and sexuality. So we’re taking away your right to defend yourself.”
    Tell me how THAT makes sense

    How is pretending to be the mayor not identity theft?
    Or is identity theft in UK not a crime?

    • @ChaoticHoly
      @ChaoticHoly Рік тому +12

      It's impersonation, not theft. ID theft involves pretending to be someone in order to commit some form of crime, typically fraud. Impersonation falls under "parody", which is why comedians have been able to impersonate famous people for centuries in the most insulting of ways without being sued for defamation. The difference is that people know the comedian is just that. AI impersonation, however, falls under the same parody laws.

    The most dystopian thing happening right now? Like right now? The fact that I'm listening to this podcast to procrastinate writing a college essay about sustainable ressource management; which led me to discover a bunch of books, papers and analyses that either predicted what would happen over the course of the last 70+ years or confirmed that those past prediction became or are becoming true.

    That you cannot have a second opinion in America. You are either Republican or Democrat; Liberal or Conservative; Coca-Cola or Pepsi? Everyone has “you are either with me or against me” mentality and nobody wants to actually have a decent, debatable human conversation. Everyone becomes hostile and it becomes top priority to invalidate and undermine any truths or facts your opponent has already stated, no matter how genuinely profound or important it was, it’s completely ignored and antagonized. Everyone is too cowardly to think and act independently and not align themselves to any political party.

    Important context for the "woman arrested for simply praying silently" story: she was outside an abortion clinic and she was in an area designated as a buffet zone. No one was allowed to be there, not pro life nor pro choice. She was not arrested for _praying_ but for _being in a designated buffer area_
    Kinda becomes a lot less sensational with that info, though, so unsurprising it was left out...

      Just like the mcdonalds coffee lady. Multiple complaints about the coffee being kept too hot, violating even mcdonalds procedures for the temperature, and she only wanted her hospital bills paid for due to the injury. Mcdonalds said no to everything so her family finally convinced a lawyer to represent her and FINALLY got her to sue, jury got ALL the information instead of just “woman spills coffee on herself then sues” and got her 10x what she was asking for

    In hindsight all of these things have all happened in every society in the history of mankind. We must be wise to spread the knowledge of those event and studiey what went wrong during the aftermath and how we can identify and prevent the pendulum from further swinging.

    Funding is not the issue with public schools.
    The allocation model is.
    Some of the most highly funded public schools are also some of the lowest performing.
    Private schools are actually cheaper per student per year. It just isn't apparent because the taxpayer foots the bill for public schools.

    The biggest thing is how quickly everyone moves on and only tries a little bit or will ignore a problem and keep complaining anyways. Those in power can and will do whatever they want. The people will do nothing, but maybe a small lawesuit or to put there friend in charge instead. There isn't any consequences for those in power and they don't care about the people or with there advancing age the world. Most of these things come from that fact.

    The Invasion of Ukraine. The fact that countries can invade whoever they want and the worst case scenario for the invader are a little sanctions. Before the Invasion I thought we moved past those times in developed countries at least. Anyone can invade anyone with no consequences as long as the bully has nukes and the victim does not have nukes. End result everyone gets nukes and then a accident happens and everyone dies.

      Trump being elected President wasn’t ‘dystopian’; it happened as a result of a democratic election in which the possibility of him being elected and not winning the public vote was known in advance. His supporters breaking into the Capitol Building was somewhat dystopian, but Trump’s presidency was like any other (even if the man himself was a bit hopeless).
      p.s. Biden’s clear cognitive decline does nothing to change the fact that Trump was a terrible president.
