“Before you slip, into, unconsciousness I’d, like to have another kiss...another flashing chance at bliss, another kiss, another kiss..” lyrics from “ Crystal Ship”’,from their debut album

Gives me chills every time! Cystal Ship is like a Kiss to LIFE - The Doors, as their name implies and as was Jim's wont - always stood passionately on the threshold and wanted to bring you with them to stand and see and hear and look and watch and wonder at it.

My favourite Doors song - at their pulsating, driven best. The "LA Woman" is Los Angeles itself, personified as the subject of the song. The Doors also had a wonderful, almost eerie quieter side which you may not have heard (listen to "The Crystal Ship" if you haven't already). You also need to watch some concert footage of the Doors! Oh, and in case no-one else has mentioned it, Mr Mojo Risin' is an anagram of Jim Morrison.

Elvis tie: The bass player on here is one Jerry Scheff who you 've seen onstage with Elvis in many videos. This was the only album they used an actual bass player on. This album was recorded in 1971 so it was while Jerry has been playing with Elvis for 2 years already. They guys in his band were all monster session players who played on tons of records in between tours with Elvis.

One cute story about the album....Morrison was already mentally into moving to France....after they recorded a song, he told everyone goodbye and headed out the door...they had to grab him and bring him back, saying, "We're not done yet..."

I travel as much as I can cause I prefer the country to NYC. My grandmother passed away in 2015 at 103. She was the most amazing person I ever met. I miss her so much. She's my hero. Not afraid to evolve with the times. She was we'll both mentally and physically u till 2014. I have so many memories that I will cherish. She loves the same music I do. I don't think she knew of Jim Morrison but Elvis yea. Secret to life that I leaned. Evolve and be tough as nails.

This is my father’s favourite band from when he was growing up in the 1960s. "Summer's Almost Gone" from their third album. One of the most mainstream songs written by Morrison, I', amazed it was not covered by mainstream guys like Sinatra, Mel Torme, Peggy Lee, Anthony Newly, Jerry Vale and all those other similar vocalist s of the period. An absolutely beautiful tune, barely 3 minutes long.

  • @michaeldavidfigures9842

Jim believed of himself that he was primarily and above all else a poet first. The band, the singing, & the rock and roll had little meaning to him. He considered the music business a necessary evil he had to go along with in order to reach the widest audience he could with his poems. The End may be his crowning achievement: a dark commentary on the psychological influences of western culture on the human mind. It is brilliantly used in the opening sequence of the Francis Ford Coppola epic Apocalypse Now. Many scholars in American Literature consider The End to be the most important piece of poetry connected to the R&R era.

7:50 While ‘70s rock owes a great debt to the blues, The Doors’ music also had a jazz influence-the beat, the keyboards, his vocals-don’t you think? Pink Floyd shows some of that too now and then.

Actually, the producers associated Elvis and his ‘50’s-era rock and roll rebels with the Marlon Brando (“the Wild One”) persona (a hero to Elvis) especially with Elvis-influenced Gene Vincent, whom famously wore black leather (Brando-like) suit. But there’s an Elvis connection and influence - and possibly both ways. It’s head to imagine Elvis didn’t feel a kinship vocally with Morrison’s big hits- “Light My Fire,” “Touch Me,”’etc.

The shots of Jim on the floor were no doubt when the band performed "Unknown Soldier". You must react to a live version (Europe '68 has this). The drama choreographed in the middle is something to see along with John Densmore's military-style snare drum. Give it a try.

Jim was always trying to take his performance to another level with a lack of inhibitions from alcohol , but also liked to do LSD to fuel his creativity as " mystic poet" guy, which was his point of departure. I'd definitely recommend "Riders On The Storm".

The Doors had no bass player so the co-founder/keyboardist Ray Manzarek (RIP) played bass lines with his left hand on a keyboard bass and keyboards with his right. Anyone going down the road of 60's/70's rock will find most of the music came out of Britain early on, The Doors were an early American group. Some of my favourite groups were The Doors, The Animals, The Yardbirds, The Who and the most underrated but best(my opinion) Ten Years After.

Actually, there are a lot of young people who know more about music than most of us suspect. One of my classes where we did a unit on poetry, I ended it with a section on song lyrics because 'this is also poetry.' Students wanted to make videos of one of their favorite songs and accompanied it with images and the lyrics on screen...I was leery and insisted I be told ahead of time of the songs they selected...trying to make sure I could cut out or censor the bad words of some ahole rap song....they actually presented so many modern songs I called in the guidance counselor to watch....it was very, very, good.

They even busted him for indecent exposure in a concert, which nobody saw, apparently. It was just a contrived charge. For songs, I'd suggest 'Crystal Ship', 'Strange Days', and 'Cars Hiss by my Window'. But there are many good ones. The Doors were one of the top bands in the world in the 60s.

Yes, the police were pretty common at Doors concerts. Aside from fans trying to rush on stage, Jim did some outrageous stuff, including exposing himself (allegedly) onstage for which he famously got busted for indecent exposure. "The jury convicted Morrison of indecent exposure and open profanity, though he was cleared of a felony count of lewd and lascivious behavior and public drunkenness. He was sentenced to six months in jail, but died two years later at age 27 in Paris while the case was under appeal.".

This is still 60's rock. The Door's had no recorded anything after 1970 together. Jim died in 1971, more than 8 months after being in the studio last. They were not around long enough in the 70's to be a 70's band. All their songs were recorded from 1966-1970 with Jim involved.

    Dani:
Ahhh... You've done another one! You've entered the rabbit hole! It's OK. Don't be afraid. C'mon, keep goin'. Don't be afraid. Go on, go on....
Here's a video of The Doors performing live, actual footage; not a compilation of short clips. This is not a wild one. In this one, you can clearly see that the audience is helplessly mesmerized. (Ray, the keyboard player, has referred to Jim as a shaman. You, yourself, have noticed that to be the case, and described it quite well.) The song is an absolute MUST when exploring The Doors: "The End." ua-cam.com/video/yZaG6Zn6VQc/v-deo.html
If you dig this one, (The End) you'll NEVER wanna come out of that rabbit hole. Welcome to our world! There's so much more, though. All of their songs are different from one another, yet, all uniquely "Doors." (They rarely even seem to do a song quite the same twice.) You'll never get tired of them, and it'll take years to find all the gems hidden in their live recordings AND studio recordings.
When you need to come out of that world, into brightness for a while, try some Uriah Heep. Sometimes beautiful and mellow, sometimes REALLY ROCKIN', sometimes in between, usually mixed, almost always very uplifting & philosophical, and there's even beauty in their hardest rockers.
    The Doors/Uriah Heep = yin/yang.
OK. Bye. I'm done ranting for now. See ya on the other side. ("Break on Through *to The Other Side*" by The Doors.)

This is just random footage the person who uploaded the video put together for the song. The song was recorded in December of 1970 and Jim Morrison died 7 months later in July of 1971. I don’t think the Doors ever performed this song live. Maybe you can react to some songs the group performed live from the Hollywood Bowl 1968 , where some of the footage in this video came from. Some songs performed were “ light my fire” , “ when the music is over” , “ The End” , “ and unknown Soldier” .
