A PC release who no one bothered to test the game at resolutions lower than 1080p with High settings? I'm curious how the PC port would have performed with... say... PS3 visuals. I can confirm that it ran decently on my low-spec desktop, with Super VGA settings. But then again... I doubt most PC gamers want sub-console levels of performance.
WB never said they would be sold individually; people assumed because each game has their own eShop page, but that’s only because you can download them separately
They can be purchased separately on the eShop. The physical cart for the three games only has Arkham Asylum complete on cart, the other two games are a download only.
I am a huge fan of these games. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two Arkham games but skipped Arkham Knight due to your excellent coverage of the game's horrid performance on all platforms at the time. However, the coverage inspired me to go back and see how it plays nowadays. I can happily confirm the game runs at >100 fps at 3840x1600 ultrawide with all visual & Nvidia gameworks settings maxed on my 9700k & 4080 PC. For a game several years old, the visuals hold up extremely well, as well as the rest of the production quality. I have had a blast over the weekend playing it the way it was meant to be played.
'Impossible ports' are even more fun. Like Tomb Raider Open Lara port for GBA. However these batman games are old. I think the first was like 2012 wasn't it? If Nintendo Switch is struggling, it's high time Nintendo release a more powerful system sooner than later.
@@skycloud4802There is no reason the Switch should be struggling on the first two games. Those are X Box 360 games. I even think Arkham Knight should run better than this. I think they probably took the quick and cheap route (this is WB Games we're talking about) and just expected the Unreal Engine to do all of the texture swapping. They should have just prioritized the most important textures and had only lower res textures in even the best case scenarios for others to cut back in the amount of texture swapping, especially while driving. I'm wondering if you stand in front of a low res wall texture long enough and don't pan the camera if it will eventually start to look sharper. No More Heroes 3 had these same problems.
I don't know if it's comparable, but Doom Eternal runs fine on Switch, and it's an intense, rapid game with a lot of streaming and particles. If you compare how much enemies at once Doom Eternal have on screen, with animations and all, Batman should be portable to Switch in the right hands maybe, but would require a lot of caching (baked lighting, AO, cubemaps for reflections, bilboards for far objects, etc)
Doom eternal isnt an open world game, it's sectioned off so you can cull a lot of geometry and textures. Arkham Knight is a heavily modified unreal engine 3 game, also most important of all It's leading platform was PS4. At launch oh the PS4 version was solid, even the PC version was broken. So imagine they took a jank base game and try to back port everything from unreal engine 3. It's pretty hard to get it playable.
Yeah, I didn't know it was so bad at release, maybe it was very optimized for PS4 hardware and it made the game/engine difficult to adapt afterwards, anyways it's a sad port @@ibrohiem
Doom eternal is running on a much newer engine that has a reputation of pushing major performance though vulkan on lower end hardware and I'd argue doesn't even look as good as AK not a valid comparison really.
@@ibrohiem even in arkham knight on switch they added a wall of tall buildings so you can't see the whole map standing on roofs @9:33 u can see it

Submitted a complaint and refund request via email to developers, I watched Oliver's excellent analysis now watching your video as I type. DISGRACEFUL how this trilogy was allowed to be sold in this state! WHY is there nothing in place to check these games before developers are allowed to release games guys!? This is bad for games industry, when trust breaks down between developers and gamers that's really not a good future at all for gaming and that's really gotta change ASAP! A lot of places that sell these games once the seal is broken they won't even accept a return, that's another thing that has to change! The anti consumerism going on nowadays is absolutely SHOCKING!
This reminds me of the story of the video game crash of 1983. Lots of oversaturation of low quality trash and consumers got tired of it and stopped buying games. Even a lot of department stores stopped carrying video games.
@@spht9ng That's happening again, lots of shops no longer stocking physical games. Hardly any left now, and just a few options available online that are trusted.
I feel bad for the kids that might receive any multiplatform Switch game. But maybe it's like when we played some Nintendo 64 games -- it was a blurry, low framerate mess, but we accepted it and tried to love what we had. I hope that the next generation Nintendo console provides a better experience for young Nintendo-fans who don't know any better.
Switch has a lot of great crossplatform games. Dead Cells Hades Saints Row 4 Skyrim Street Fighter Collection I'll throw in Bloodstained and Sifu, even though they don't run at 60 fps. I'll throw in Nier Automata and Alien Isolation for fans of those games.
I played Arkham Knight on AMD Ryzen 3 3200G APU. And with some Config tweaks it ran around 30 to 50 FPS with occasional dips to 20s. But I ran ALL Arkham games in 1366x768 Resolution with all High settings.
10:45 It could easily be that they wanted to skimp out on cartridge size, so they just had to massively compress textures across the board. A lot of Switch games that have super low resolution textures are more for space than performance reasons.
There's no physical release for AC or AK. If you buy the trilogy on cartridge, only AA is included on the cartridge and the other 2 games are download-only (the cartridge just acts as a license key).
Arkham Origins is considered the bastard child of the Batman games. So much so that it's not even considered canon any more. Asylum, City and Knight are the "real" trilogy. I don't even think it's that bad. Especially now that it's had its many patches.
Asylum and city are well done ports, especially city looks very crisp and runs well. Knight is not optimized and i believe they are working on patches for this, its not unplayable at all but it has some serious issues and definitely need work, if they wont patch it up, their reputation is about done and trashed. That port needs more attention from the studio, but its not that bad as many people say.
I must be the minority as in motion and non-environment objects look alright - the environment detail is understandably bad due to cutbacks, but the frame rate is what gives me 0 chance of getting this anytime soon
I think Asylum and City can be shored up to have a consistent 30 with proper frame pacing, but Knight? Not a chance. Knight is the one game of the three I never played so I'm really bummed that I won't be able to play this version. I do almost all of my gaming on Switch lately because of the portability.

I think CDPR deserve a lot of credit but Witcher 3 is definitely easier and more optimized than Arkham Knight. I remember playing W3 on a gtx 750 + i3 combos at medium / low settings and getting around 30fps, while Knight wouldn't even run.
Witcher 3 is more deliberately paced, jankier, and uglier (on the Switch). Especially in handheld mode. It's "tolerable", but it's hard for folks like me to play for long period of time, since the art isn't properly designed to be parseable at low resolutions. (Skyrim and Metroid Prime Remastered don't have this problem, and look even better on the Switch than Witcher 3.) Witcher 3 is right on the line of Switch games that are tolerable (when docked). And that's stretching things to be charitable. Then again, Tears of the Kingdom ran (on launch) about as well as Arkham City on the Switch! There's time.
But was there not an update later on where Arkham knight would be upgraded to UE4.!? Made not much difference in optics but maybe ue4 would or could run better on switch!?.
Origins was buggy and had some questionable boss designs, but was otherwise fine. That low rez bat signal just goes to show they just blanket lowered the resolution of the textures en masse without any concentrated effort to get this to run properly.

For frame of reference, I ran the horrible PC port on my GTX 670 back in the day. It actually ran fine if you locked it to 30.
