The bed is a large horizontal structure or beam that's used to support other parts of a lathe like the headstock and tailstock. With the exception of woodworking lathes, nearly all lathes have a bed. It's the long platform on which these parts are mounted.
What is used for a machine bed?
The choice of machine bed material also plays an important role in satisfying the financial, environmental, safety, and aesthetic requirements. The options range from steel casting, gray cast iron, steel, and hard stone to mineral casting, metal foam, fiber composites, and ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC).
How many bed-ways are there in a lathe machine?
The bed-ways are of three types. Normally the bed-ways stop at a distance away from the headstock with a gap at this point. This enables to mount larger diameters of the work. Some lathes have a detachable section of the bed, which can be fitted when desired, to enable the saddle to operate close to the headstock.
What is a lathe bed used for?
The lathe bed provides a rigid foundation for the entire machine and holds the headstock, tailstock and carriage in alignment. Lathe beds are usually made of fine-grain cast iron. The machined and ground surfaces of the bed on the carriage and tailstock slide are called ways.
What is the composition of the lathe bed?
Lathe beds are usually manufactured with Cast iron or Mild steel. In case of extremely large machines, the bed may be in two or more pieces, bolted together to from the desired length. Lathe Bed is heavy rigid structure which is having high damping capacity for the vibrations generated by machines during machining.
What material is a bed made of?
Frames. Bed frames, also called bed steads, are made of wood or metal. The frame is made up of head, foot, and side rails. For heavy duty or larger frames (such as for queen- and king-sized beds), the bed frame also includes a center support rail.
What is bed length in lathe machine?
With at least some lathes, bed length is exactly that, the length of the bed. This includes the part of the bed under the tail and headstock. If measured this way, the center - center distance is a lot less than the stated bed length.
