- In this video I am discussing my experience living through american culture shocks as an american. The United States has many unique cultural quirks such as our willingness to smile at strangers, bubbly customer service and even billboards for church. I discuss my feeling encountering these american culutre shocks in reverse, coming off a year abroad in the United Kingdom.

When I go to a store, the absolute last thing I wan't is for some employee to come "help" me.
I'm an adult, I know how shopping works, and if I need help, I just... ask for help!
exactly! or touch my food after I had purchased it and start shoving it in a bag (that I have to pay for). Thanks but I have my own reusable bag and I can put my groceries in that bag alone. Every time I refuse bagging in LA they look at me like I murdered someone.
It's sooooo true!!! I'm from China and I'm studying in Davidson, NC (j for context, it's an itty bitty little town next to Charlotte). I was soooo struggling in the first semester cuz I had completely no clue about when ppl would be greeting me and what I should say. Also, everyone seemed so energetic and they are with friends all the time, so I started judging myself if I am isolating myself, etc. Now I'm way better at making small talk and chatting excessively, but I still pay a lot of attention to it. The socializing scene in the US is so distinct...

One thing I've noticed about serving Americans is that they aren't independent thinkers when it comes to deciding what they want in a shop or restaurant.
You've more or less given the example here by walking into a shop. If you're in the shop we kind of expect the customer to know what they're looking for. Just ask if you need more information on the product.
An English person in a restaurant would ask one question about a dish and if they didn't like the answer they'd order something else but the American would always say something like "so I'm undecided between the enchiladas and the tacos?" and then want me to make up their minds for them and yes, I just say the easiest option for the kitchen and not the best 😂😂
I work in a restaurant I see Americans getting scammed every week because they seem to trust the sales person too much....and then they tip them 🤣🤣😂😂

When they say good morning, just wave. If you say something then they might want to small talk.
They should just put those signs up everywhere & it will eliminate gun crime.

I don't know if this sign still exists, but in the City of Pittsburgh there is Arsenal Middle School (It was built on the grounds of a US arsenal pivotal in the US Civil war. Interesting and sad history). The sign read "Arsenal School is a GUN FREE zone". Politics aside, this sign always made me chuckle. One would assume that ARSENAL school would be where ALL of the GUNS were! 🤷♂️P.S. I "humble brag" on the OPPOSITE of "busy". When any one asks what I'm doing after work or on the weekend. I tell them I'm doing NOTHING. I make enough with my regular hours to pay my bills and eat. I am not about "side hustle". I am about taking a walk or a bike ride (BOTH kinds!) listening to a ballgame or just laying on the couch watching the ceiling fan. LOL. I exited the "rat race" decades ago. I'm not here to impress anyone with my ability to burn myself out!
When I ventured South (or far West), I gotta say it seemed slightly "foreign" to me. And I'm an American (Pittsburgh, PA my whole life) who has NEVER been overseas. (Been to Canada a "million" times as a have family there.) I guess I am more "Midwest" than anything else I can describe, although I am "technically" FROM the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic, I "understand" Cleveland and Chicago more than I do ANYTHING South of Baltimore or West of St. Louis. And I can also "get" the Northeast. (YES, Even New York City, LOL) 🤷♂️Don't get me wrong! I'm NOT AT ALL "dissing" the South or the West for that matter, It's just "different". That's what's cool about the US. You CAN get different cultural experiences in ONE country. Pretty Cool.
