  • The Louis Armstrong House Museum has acquired the only known film of the great jazz musician in a recording studio, recording the 1959 album, "Satchmo Plays King Oliver." This exclusive video depicts Armstrong and his All Stars recording the master take of "I Ain't Got Nobody," as well as silent footage of them listening to the playback. Also featured in the clip are Trummy Young, trombone, Peanuts Hucko, clarinet, Billy Kyle, piano, Mort Herbert, bass and Danny Barcelona, drums. The original album was produced for Audio Fidelity records by Sid Frey, who commissioned the film to be made. It was discovered in a storage facility in 2012 and was brought to the Armstrong House with help of Frey's daughter, Andrea Bass.

    I just read an article saying that some black artists came to criticize Armstrong for grinning all the time, because they felt like he was doing it just to "put the white folk at ease." Yet here we have a behind-the-scenes film, and there's the grin. I honestly think the man was just in love with being alive - and with music, of course. Thanks for posting this. The world needs more Satch!

    Always cool to see the creative process, especially pre 80’s film, you don't see to many films from past eras of the recording process....very cool find...also interesting to see a businesslike, subdued(for him)Louis, because his public persona was very carefree and jovial.

    What a treat to watch Pops recording, a few years after I'd heard him in my hometown as a teenager. He lights up the screen here, just as he took over from Streisand as he came down the stairs in Hello Dolly! This is so beautiful I want to send a link to all my friends.

    From the first note Louis always sets up an incredible groove and no wonder he liked Peanuts Hucko and of course Trummy Young the tram man for Louis.

      Peanuts Hucko is the clarinetist. He said that he tried to play like Louis Armstrong, and I think in spirit he did.

    Great stuff as always from Louis and the All stars!!!!!! Although... Are we sure that's not Barney Bigard on clarinet rather than Peanuts Hucko?

    • @SeanStanley1986
      @SeanStanley1986 6 років тому +3

      Yes 100% Peanuts Hucko. Bigard was about 50lbs heavier and looks nothing like Hucko. His sound was also totally different than Hucko. More vibrato and woody tone. I could listen blind and tell you that's not Bigard.

      I always thought they used separate mics for vocal and trumpet. Wow, secrets revealed. Oh, wait! Yes, that's a stereo mic; so they used one channel of it for the trumpet and one for the vocal.

    I love Louis so much. I just do. His voice was incredible, and he radiates light and happiness of life which is just crazy to me. Such a talented man. Here he talks about ‘keeping his chops’ : ua-cam.com/video/wyNRy1To5vg/v-deo.html 💔 I can only dream of playing trumpet with as much as feel as him. So much respect for the trumpet. ✨

      +Mbletz No. That's not why. You probably would not be able to separate the original recording from one recorded yesterday in terms of quality. Those exact microphones are still in use on the most prestigious of recordings of today. This should sound absolutely stunning regarding quality.

    • @GeorgeIsaacsZzz
      @GeorgeIsaacsZzz 8 років тому +2

      No. It's a film of the session, recorded without Mr. Armstrong's knowledge and recently discovered. I don't know if those microphones on screen are relevant to the sound you are hearing on this clip.
