It's finally here! Our demo with Paul Hindmarsh of Line 6 of the brilliant Helix, one of the most powerful multi-effects instrument processors ever created. Arriving in September, if this doesn't whet your appetite then nothing will.
Amp list 21:06
Cab list 21:32
Univibe 8:48
Octavia Fuzz 14:49
Cool synth 16:38
Rotary Speaker 16:52
Harmony Delay 17:14
Warm Chorus 17:42
Double Whammy, +1, -1 18:33
This guy is a really solid player.. and the Helix sounds fantastic here, although this is the only demo I've seen of it where I've been really impressed.
+Euan Hamilton I liked the Anderton's demo very much too, and I think it's because Paul Hindmarsh was using his own (very well-tuned) custom patches where I suspect the other demos mostly used the default factory patches. Also, he's a killer guitarist.
Another great video of the Helix & an A++ from Paul too! It's amazing how each players style & guitar of choice affects then end results. That 1st Bogner tone alone was jaw dropping & boy did it clean-up well without going to mush or loosing any definition! Peace! X-Mann
Looks and sounds great! Can't wait to try one for myself. Thanks for the demo Paul!
Fantastic playing from Mr Hindmarsh , absolute legend of a player .
Would pay good money to watch him play live .
Great demo Paul! The Helix sounds amazing indeed!!
Finally a demo which makes me glad I pre-ordered the Helix!
This sounds REALLY good!! Glad to see it wasn't mastered. I have a Helix on pre-order and looking forward to putting it through its paces....thanks for the demo, well done!!
Great demo, this unit looks very tempting, though the last time I bought Line 6 (HD500X) I was disappointed.
Now _that's_ what a call a demo (in particular WITH dynamics) ! Great work :)
First video where this actually sounds good. It just sounds fizzy and direct everywhere else. Sounds like a great touring option here.
Fantastic playing as always Paul!
holy crap this dude is the real deal....screw the helix, I want to just see this dude play lol ~
Thanks Kelster
+paulhindmarshmusic Yeah Paul you rock ... but where are the patches and models you demo'd ... I bought largely based on your demo of what I would get and I am super underwhelmed by the supplied factory models and patches ....
Alien SexGod Send me your email address and I'll send you my current bundle. Its a bit messy at the moment but you are more than welcome to it.
paulhindmarshmusic
Thanks
paulhindmarshmusic
When you can I am looking for that email thanks. In the meantime I will buy some IRs from www.redwirez.com/bigbox.jsp
Super demo which has confirmed what I was hoping, that the Helix would deliver on its promise. The user interface looks like an industry-best, I can't wait to try one out. Are these shipping in worldwide in september? Or just the US?
was wondering if it's possible to upload the 'room mic' only version of this video instead of this 'direct sound'? Would to hear how this interacts with the room. The mic you use when you recorded you voice.
Awesome video, man. What do you think of the Helix compared to the Axe FX?
Great demo video. I want the Helix.
Nice guitar playing. British Spitfire on the wall. Can't wait to take Helix for a test drive. Does it have a noise suppressor?
13:19 damn that Vox AC30 emulation sounds great!
Hello.which model of stratocster did you used?and what the model of the pickups?thank you
your playing is outstanding. thanks for posting!
Thank you.
Fantastic review and outstanding tones!
thanks for the demo,, it made me order my very own Helix,, those patches you use are you own? if so do you share or sell 'em ?
Pretty awesome demo! I'm wondering though, It has midi in and out so I know it can be controlled my midi controller or send midi signal out, but is it possible to use midi from inside a DAW, say Reaper, to control the effects while recording?
6 rotary encoders (not potentiometers) directly under a display that shows the current parameter and value for each encoder. Brilliant! Effect selector switches that change the encoders/display to the paramaters/values for the selected effect... brilliant! Perhaps the first modeling processor capable of behaving like a tube amp, wah, overdrive, chorus, delay and reverb pedals.
was that comment at the end about the L6 link a confirmation that the Helix will be compatible with the DT amps? i thought we weren't getting much support for them.
Nice video Paul. Just pre-ordered this. My question is, will there be an editor software, similar to POD HD Edit?
Do you have a preference with the Helix in reference to FRFR speaker cabs vs traditional cabs?
Thanks
Was your mic turned on for some of the examples? I can hear the sound of the pick on the strings. Is it possible that we're also hearing your monitors along with the direct input of the Helix? I'm hearing a little of something I don't like under the main tone and I'm wondering if that's it. But overall, it sounds great. Good demo.
The camera mic was blended in a bit. To hear the direct sounds check out my Facebook page there is a link on there. Paulhindmarshmusic
would like to know which are stock and which are tweaked and will your patches be on custom tone. Also more with a jtv69 ala your 4/6/11 demo which cost me $1300 lol.
Awesome as always, Thanks!
On the patch that you have the two octave pedals assigned to the expression pedal, there seems to be a slight lag/delay to the responsiveness of the pedal. Not talking about stiffness of the pedals, just how quickly they respond. I this an issue?
such a great player you are sire
Here a list of all the amps being played.
Mesa Dual Rec 6:05
Peavey 5150 7:12
Marshall JTM 45 7:53
Bogner Ubershall 11:33
Divided By 13 12:22
Fender Twin 12:56
Vox Ac30 13:22
Fender Delux / Tweed Bassman 14:05
Orange / Fender Twin 15:09
JCM800 / Bogner Shiva 15:26
Mesa Dual Rec / Soldano 15:50
Hey Paul.
Thanks for the demo at Andertons. I did in fact collect my Helix the Monday following and got dug in immediately. A few tweaks and I was away. I have been so inspired that I've not put the plank down since getting it home...you said that'd happen lol.
A question Paul...do we have a 'sound share' site/page anywhere yet? I'd love to offer some patches as well as try others...yours for instance.
Anyway, best purchase in ages!
+edward fermor Hi Edward head to the Line 6 custom tone website. You can share your patches there. If you head over to my Facebook page, 'like' it and message me your email I'll send out all my sounds.
Paul, can you show the technique for slipping the pick away, then how you brought it back out so easily. Its at 16:14 in the video... thx.
Do you guys think this would work well with a new Peavey Vypyr Pro? I think it would be awesome to use the two together.
Great, great demo. I currently run an H3000 in the stereo effects loop in my current set-up. Can I do the same with the Helix? I.e run 2 of the 4 fx loops as a stereo pair? (L/R send, L/R return )
Question, will you be able to choose the speaker model for an amp? Or will there be different trims of the same amp? Because for example, a Vox AC30 with greenbacks sounds different than a Vox AC30 with alnico blues. I guess what I really want to know is, will there be an AC30 w/ alnico blues model? Or a vintage AC30TB?
Wow the Bogner sounds great Paul.
the mesa and peavey sims sound really good, definitely sound better than the amp sims in the hd,even with the additional delay and reverb, though I would like to hear them dry for metal
Hi Paul
would the Helix sound good through just one Line 6 L3t
Might be a stupid question, but can you program a custom tone to one footswitch? Example, one footswitch is programmed for a Deluxe Rvb with slapback for rhythm, then step on another switch for lead which would be a JTM 45 with Univibe and long delay.
Yes you can.
+Nick Molak yeah it was a stupid question. What kind of effects processor can't do that?
Awesome, but it doesn't communicate with my DT amp!! Doesn't change any of the amp settings like the HD500.
Sounds great. What, exactly, is in the signal chain from the Helix to encoding for video?
+Joe Bear Paul already replied in a comment below: "Strat-Helix-protools. No Effects were added in protools"
Nice demo Paul ...
One remark/question however: if you want to use amp models in Helix, then I guess it's not a good idea to play through your personal amp but better through a full range speaker right?
Is it important which full range speaker you use then please? Line 6 StageSource speakers maybe?
And by the way, is there an option on the Helix to choose to which kind of output you're sending? PA, Guitar Amp, full range speaker, etc ... (like in the POD)?
Thanks!
Rob
You can play through anything. Full range is good and has many advantages, but helix will also work into a guitar amp. You just need to choose what sort of signal you want to send. Full amp model , pre amp , fx etc
I'm gonna get a Helix before the end of the year. It sounds amazing!!
I have a focusrite scarlett 2i4, so, does it make sense to keep it having the helix and using it as a souncard? I just want to record guitars, and depending of the results I would keep the focusrite or get rid of it if I don't need it.
That was the best Helix review, well done! Paul in an insane guitar player
Stand by for a new Variax ( not the Yamaha one) since these HX models are out on Helix. Variax prices are coming down so I expect newer models, most likely around Christmas time. The Helix looks interesting but I'm waiting to see if Roland revamps the VG 99, since it had 3 dsp chips in it and it still holds up very well even tho its relatively old. I really do like the interface and editing that the techs at Line 6 have come up with for this unit. Also multiple effects loops, and expression pedals that can be hooked in. The DSP chips in this unit are weaker than Tiger SHARC chips the Fractal AX FX has, hence it's cheaper than a Fractal, but its nice to see Line 6 really up their game and take a run at Cliff and his AXE FX. Sweet Strat btw.
Hey Paul, great demo and product. One question though, if I set up a preset/signal path with two amps, say one set clean with reverbs, etc., and the other set dirty, can I "ABY" between them within that same preset? Love the sound of that Marshall with that Shiva, but what if I wanted them separate as well-do I go from one preset to three? Is there an ABY switcher somewhere in all that technological glory?
Yeah you can do that :-)
Can you use it as an amp alone with a physical cab or do you need a power amp for that?
You would need a power amp for that.
Only thing I'm wondering is, given that I won't have cash for this beast for a while, will Guitar Rig with a good external soundcard and the right setup do a similarly great job, or is this really the future of amp modeling - and then when will we see this kind of modeling in something like the Guitar Rig or equivalent software plugin?
OMG! That Univibe sounded amazing...and then....and then you jammed the Bogner. Clean up in isle 3!
It's funny.. They say FINALLY you get the touch response and "feel" of a real amp. Well, the X3 Live was good enough for the likes of Lincoln Brewster 6 years ago. I'm still using my X3 Live and it cleans up with the volume knob nicely feels great. So the Helix should be light years ahead of the X3, and obviously sounds incredible. I've heard a ton of great reviews aside from this one. Personally, I can't wait to get my hands on this piece, and I still don't miss my tube amps and pedals.... Line 6 is continuing to blow my mind.
What's the set up for this demo. Fender strat into Helix, then to an amp or direct into PC? Awesome video :)
+GuitarToneFreaks Thanks. Strat-Helix-protools. No Effects were added in protools.
Paul -- great video (and nice playing). Were the presets you demoed from about 6 mins in ones that you made, or are they presets that came with the unit? They sound fantastic, so if they're yours it would be great if you posted them once the Helix came out. Thanks!
+Andrew Biggs Thanks. These are all my sounds. I'll definitely share them on release.
+paulhindmarshmusic Thanks! Looking forward to it.
best recording to date!
I appreciate your video...when will a manual be out?...that's what is holding me back...
Excellent!
That Twin sound at 13:00 is very wooly (low frequency distortion). With the drive set at 32 (low), shouldn't that sound be very clean? I don't see any drive pedal models in the signal chain.
+surfguitarshredder
Yes a very strange tone to choose to represent a Twin which is renowned as a clean amp.
+surfguitarshredder perhaps he still had the tubescreamer on?
+Joel K
I think he did. When he demos the VOX after the Twin, he says something to the affect of, "Let's take that tube screamer off there for a second" or something like that, so I would assume that means that he had it on when he demoed the Twin sound. Hopefully that's the case, lol
Hi you may have mentioned this already in the video, but can you plug the Helix directly into speakers and start playing or do you need to plug it into a dedicated power amp to hear the sounds?
+Jonny Guitar Hey there, you can output straight into some speakers, no need to have any special power amp to use the Helix.
Paul, might I enquire as to what pickups you are using in your strat? Sounds fantastic!
Jason Kerr looks to be stock pickups on the neck and middle. the bridge looks like Seymour Duncan little 59er.
Hi .Yes its a little 59 and the custom shop 54s. Thank you.
Helix sounds great but as a gear geek I am curious about the strat :) What is the model of it exactly Paul?
It's a custom shop 50th anniversary. John English master build.
+paulhindmarshmusic with a little 59 in the bridge.
Thanks for the reply. Sounds great!
"Very, very soon!" It's the middle of January 2016 and I have just got mine. So, that was a lie. To be fair to Line 6, I think they grossly under-estimated the popularity of this product. It is a game-changer, and has put Line 6 back at the top of the tree. It is a fantastic product! If Line 6 had known just how good this product was, they would have charged twice as much for it. The PR/marketing team need to be bollocked for this.
Good work very great sound!!
Does the built in controller have a kickdown switch under it, so you can use it like a traditional wah where you have to step down to activate it?
Yes
+paulhindmarshmusic Well then, I officially have absolutely no other complaint or feature request I can think of. Let the hype build! \m/
:-)
Sounds so good better than a lot of videos out there that sound like crap.
Neck and bridge pickups?
Any chance to get Paul's settings for the amps?
Also, anyone knows what pickups he's sporting in that guitar?
...that dude can play btw!
Thanks. I send out my settings on my Facebook page. Check it out.
Hold the phone - at 26:02 it is mentioned that the Line 6 Link port can be used to connect to DT amplifiers. Could you please clarifiy? It's widely known that the Helix will not natively control the topology of DT amps, but can we still use the Line 6 Link port to send audio to the amp?
Hi. Yes line 6 link will still send audio and route the signal in stereo if you have two DT amps.
+paulhindmarshmusic Hi, Paul! Great video, as usual!! Will the Helix control the DT amplifiers as the Hd500 did, changing the voicings on the amp and the A or A/B class modes?
+Daniel Gomes Im afraid not. No idea why. Be nice if it did.
+paulhindmarshmusic Can't you do that through MIDI commands, though?
I think DI said he was going to include some presets for that?
If thats Digital Igloo? Then totally believe everything he says. I've not heard that but he knows way way more than me!
its sound and looks pretty good but its pretty expensive not too sure if you look at the hd500 which at a fraction of the price
so amazing! what exactly is the setup for that double whammy? my helix will be here in a few weeks and i am super stoked!
also could i run my bassist thru as well while im playing guitar?
+skeetownstylee yes:-)
It's two amps one with a whammy going up an octave and one down an octave. Both panned hard left and right.
15:00 sounds nice and royal blood - esque
What PU is that in the bridge?? Is that stock from custom shop??
+Francois DuJour Its s Seymour Duncan Little 59.
+paulhindmarshmusic awesome! Thanks for the response man. Incredible playing!!! \m/
Francois DuJour yes little 59ers are awesome. but I think the SD hotrails are a little bit better for lead and high gain.
Fine and well! Sure it sounds good in the uber controlled environment of a recording studio, but how does it sound through an amplifier on the stage at a gig?
it won't sound the same considering amps have eq controls that affect the sound. your best bet is to use a flat PA so that is processed in the Helix sounds almost exactly what you hear through your headphones or monitor speakers
+TBoneous Maximus Hey man, we made sure to keep it as pure as possible. Recorded everything straight into Ableton, no EQing or processing, then just dropped the audio files into the video editor with no further editing. None needed, I reckon :)
+GUITARGUITAR Got it! Line 6 makes great stuff. I have the whole Dream Rig. I love it. But getting a usable tone for live applications is like extracting a tooth with a tooth pick. It takes a looooong time because it seems that none of it is really designed for live applications through a guitar amp. And I am sorry, FRFR sucks for a guitarist. To me, you loose all of the juice that happens between the pickups and the amp speaker. Hendrix doing the Star Spangled Banner through an FRFR set up would loose everything that made that performance what it was.
That's a good point, it'd sound pants! But the Helix tries to create all that magic internally, so the thinking is that if you're further filtering that tone through a guitar amp, you lose the attention to detail they've tried to create recreating these old amps.
+GUITARGUITAR And there lies the rub! Why even bother creating a floor model? Something that you can step on to me says "Live application". It means that I can readily switch up stuff with my feet while keeping my hands on the guitar. Well, if all that internal magic does not translate to live applications, then why not just go with a rack mounted unit? In the studio environment it is much easier to dial up a good tone with a computer interface than with your feet! What's with all of the buttons that you can customize if you are not going to use it live? Why have all of the features that a giging guitarist would want if you are going to loose the attention to detail they've tried to create recreating these old amps" by going through a guitar amp? Are guitar amps a thing of the past? If so, then I am a regressive cause FRFR for a guitarist stinks!
Can this pedal or rack used as audio interface via usb?
+CarnivorousRoach Most definitely, 8 inputs and 8 outputs, on-board mic preamp, individual level adjustments and different gain staging too.
Can you plug the helix straight into a guitar cab without an amp? Or would you need an frfr speaker and then it would work without a power amp. Also, how would you hear the sound if you ran the helix straight into a computer? Would you have to run it into a DAW to hear something?
+SandStormer Unfortunately no, the Helix doesn't have a power amp built in so it'd need some juice to amplify it. However, the Helix can act as an audio interface, just plug it in via USB and you should be able to hear it through your computer and record directly into your DAW.
+GUITARGUITAR eh, as far as I'm aware you can indeed plus it into an FRFR speaker, such as the Freidman ASM-12.
Ah yes, you could indeed, as the ASM-12 is a powered speaker/amp :)
the only question is: can at least equal the Axe FX ? cause it's hard to imagine that there is room to be beaten :)))
this is what i want to know too. especially now that the AX8 is out and for the same price.
Very nice review - Line6 should sponsor you
+JudgeFredd they do better than that....they employ him!
If it sounds good in the effects return of my amp/allowing me the flexibility of the Helix + tube power section & pushing air I'd have the best of both words & I'd be SOLD on this product. As of yet, I'm not convinced I can cut in a live setting going direct with IR & compete with the other guitarist using a tube amp:-)
why not using a humbucker for the distorted sounds?
+Lucian Radu It is a humbucker www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/little-59-strat-bridge
ok /thanks
no hay caso, despues del pod 2.0, lo mejor que hay es boss gt10 y gt100.
What guitar are you using?
+Ivan Monfrecola and which pickups?
+Ivan Monfrecola Custom shop 54 strat with Duncan Little 59.
Great video. Would like to have heard without the drop D tuning.
Does this have a looper in it?
+anast dimebagrestinpeace It does indeed :)
Im buying this for sure then! :)
, How is this connected to the recorder in this video, ?
+Paul Callaghan Recorded directly into Pro Tools with no EQing, saved as wav and synced with the video :)
+GUITARGUITAR sounds great, is it over usb?
No it was recorded using a separate audio interface, though using the helix's USB is totally possible.
GUITARGUITAR how have you connected it to the interface .
Raddest accent ever!!
+Doug Steele
Haha, I guess you haven't heard Colin from 'CSGuitars' here on YT,
somewhat similar accent ...just way more pronounced!
Yeah, I don't get around much, soz. Busy busy busy.
+Doug Steele
You have to find the time for such things!
Hear me!? You have to!
Soonish, baby. Hell, send me a link!
+DerEchteBold Er, no, Colin from CSGuitars is very, very Scottish.....this guy isn't, he sounds like he's from the North of England
When will this start shipping?
+Paul Tiplea We're looking at getting some in late October, then I believe a few more early November :)
+Paul Tiplea Mine shipped today. I ordered it five weeks ago though. The Sweetwater rep said that preorders are high and supply is low though, so expect a wait.
+daver787 ouch. I actually got mine on Saturday. There's a small music store here in California that had only 5 of them and I snatched one of them up.
Nice. How do you like it?
+daver787 honestly, it's everything I hoped it would be and more. It sounds phenomenal. And the UI is so easy to use and awesome. You won't be sorry about buying it.
1st demo where it sounds rlly good, hope its not mastered
+Christian Pucciarelli (christophersad) No we made sure not to master it, these sounds are directly recorded, though with a bit of room noise of Paul's strumming left in the mix.
then here it sounds really good ;)
+GUITARGUITAR Are the Four External Loops stereo?
+GUITARGUITAR OK so I bought a Helix and where are these amps and sounds he demos? a JCM 800 & Bogner Shiva ... nothing like it in there. I appreciate that you legally cant use these exact names. I see now that patch 07C uses the same Brit 2204 amp he uses @ 15.28 but Brit 2204 sound NOTHNG like this patch model or whatever it is. It's like false advertising showing this what you get and you don't get it? You kept the good models to sell to us later? WHere are they? Patch 07D on the shipping Helis is an absolute crap German Mahadeva but Paul has somehow created a Mesa Boogie model Soldano amp @ 15.52 WTF. You said you spent a month of man hours on each amp model getting the detail I bought the unit ... where are these amp models?
+Phil Smith No man ... that's clearly visible via pics
How come his Strat sounds like an eight-string monster with four high-output humbuckers? And no, I don't think it's in his fingers.
That Bogner @ 11:32
sounds awesome but apparently there are no clean tones on it...
+T Caldwell Line 6 released a bunch of clean tone demos at the start only to have people moan about the lack of "metal" or high gain tones. Now they release demos with lots of high gain and people are calling out that they can't hear any clean. I can't wait for this to be out so UA-cam can be flooded with every tone imaginable.
Paul, stop making videos because when you do I end up spending a bunch of money; I just bought a Firehawk as you know...I think the wife is thinking about putting a hit out on you...Just kidding man, once again, great video...the Firehawk is great, but this...
Thanks and apologise to the wife from me:-)
It's not mastered the guy is a great guitarist. Watch any of Paul's videos he's extremely talented on guitar.
15:50
I just ordered one from mf, I HOPE IT'S ALL THAT
John Stamos
NO DJENT - FALE
*hands bro a bottle of water*
Some people need to chill. Perhaps your $300 China built guitar won't reproduce these sounds. If your gonna spend $1500 on this then why not on your axe???
With an HD500 collecting dust, I'm distrustful of these promises. Show us the signal path. Don't gloss over anything.
wat
