I am glad you got a real tractor over there.. I have had this happen as well. The balance gears have needle bearings and they fail. Then they wobble and fall to the oil pan and cause the destruction.
The 16G is probably the BEST Gravely 4-wheeler ever produced. I prefer the 16G (or 18G) over all other Gravely 4-wheelers. If that were my tractor (the 12G), I'd find a Kohler M18S from a Gravely, to replace that blown 12HP, and make it into a 16G. The transmission is the same in all the G's, and the only caveat is that whatever engine you get, it needs to be from a Gravely (for the mounting to the transaxle), OR, you need a Gravely adapter plate for the Kohler engine.
That's a great Gravely Rider. We had an 8163-b for years. It had the deck, rototiller, snow blower, and weight sets for the front and rear. Great machine! We follow another channel and saw your comment there. We'd love if you'd give our channel a look if you get a minute and aren't already following us. Thank you!
I agree. Sure it can be saved because there’s no hole in the block, but then I have to find a used crank in great condition that won’t require me to get it machined straight or .010. These old cranks start to egg shape on the journals after years of use or abuse. I think as others said, low oil or cutting a hillside could starve this engine to the point it blows.
Those Gravely's are such neat (and unusual) tractors! Very heavy-duty. Those balance gears in the Kohler K series engines do more harm than they do good. It's a shame that one had to end so badly, but luckily the parts are out there to rebuild them! You should at least be able to salvage the block.
If it gets rebuilt, leave those silly balance gears out. They were supposed to cause them not to shake as much. I left them out when I rebuilt my k301 on a Cub. Don't think they're needed. Good luck. There are still a lot of old Kohlers out there. Marketplace is your friend.
I’m on the hunt. I think we are rebuilding it and my son’s friend is going to help. It will be a good learning experience for both of us. I’ve rebuilt Onans, Briggs and Tecumseh but never an old Kohler. Those balance gears weren’t in the old K301s with points from what I can tell. I’d like to leave them out since they caused this in the first place.
boy what a mess and the parts to fix this motor is another story . That is if it can be rebuilt . Best thing to do as we all know is to finish taking it apart and see whats up with the block and what the parts cost . Then tell the owner and see what he wants to do . Most likely the owner will abandon the idea for a full blown rebuild . You also have to be aware of the drive forward and reverse clutch replacement . That in it self is a big cost . 400 for the clutch and both cones plus labor . So it might not be worth repairing . What a shame . The people that still owns these really love them and they do work really well . The people that owns them work on them for them selves . What a nice looking tractor though .
Yeah, I’m a Wheel Horse guy too. I am still discussing with my son’s friend what he wants to do. I’m happy to rebuild the Kohler as parts and cash are available to him.
I know, doesn't it hurt to see that? It was on the low side but still in the zone on the stick. Oil didn't look bad and nothing shiny looking came out when I drained it. I'm betting it was a little low, mowed a hill or something and boom. I was just out there pulling the flywheel and internals. The other balance gear fell out, split in 2. Nothing survived internally. Piston didn't come out easy so I bet it has good compression.
hey Craig, I now started www.enginebore.com for your kohler parts :D the block is still rebuildable unless you punched a whole. I personally would salvage it but if he can find another gravely engine thats the way to go. I picked up a one owner 16G with a twin magnum very nice machines!
@@CraigArndt thanks! you as well. I have had allot of neat projects come and go but unfortunately did not film them! hope to have things up soon. I have been just watching you guys I am subscribed to :)
There is more to it than just swapping in a Honda. I can help you with the Repower. If you use that plate, the oil is going to run out of the transmission on hills.
Good. I’m down to one, just the 520H, sold the 416 to a buddy who needed a tractor. I just put a new (used) steering wheel on the 520, I blew up the other one, hit a fence post and cracked the wheel when it ripped out of my hand. That was a nightmare to get that roll pin out. Took three days of pounding, but it’s in now.
I checked the oil when he brought it here, it was a bit low, still in range. Probably mowed a hill and blew it up. I am on the ebay hunt for parts, thinking of rebuilding it. Saw you on a 2017 Gravely Club video, if I can get the parts should be a fun rebuild.
I found a std M10 crank and piston/rod from a Cub that looks to be in good shape. From the manual a M10 crank looks like it will work in an M12 unless I’m wrong. I was going to order a new rod and piston for an M12 anyway since a M10 piston is too small. Not sure about rod though.
Craig Arndt the 10HP Ian it compatible. The 12hp crank only fits the 12...... the stroke is different than the 12. A 12hp crank only fits a 12hp. It appears the same stroke etc ad”s a 14 or 16 but the crank on a 12 is ground flat on the balance lobes where a 14 or 16 is rounded. The 12-16 take the same rod....
BOOM! Great vid Craig. Thanks!

That engine is toast. Yep , a repower is in its future

These Gravely tractors are so cool. Fully hydraulic yet is a gear driven tractor, pretty sweet.
A crank and can from a K series or magnum works. 14 and 16hp have the same crank and cam. As long as the crank is 1.125” it is easily rebuildable.
That's good to know, I'll have to see what he wants to do.

Now you see why I mess with them all the time :) Stinks that it happened, but if the block is good it can be rebuilt or repowered fairly easy
Yeah the tractor itself has years left on it, just needs to be rebuilt. I'm going to see what he wants to do with it.
MANNN THAT LOOKS LIKE IT'S GONNA BE A BUGGER TO FIX THAT MESS--WOWWW...

Nice mower but i still like my 416-8 wh

Ouch That hurts to look at that much damaged.....Was it low on oil or had no oil in it ?

Nice
I would send it back to gravely and see what they would do with it even though it is very old

Nice to know! Great to hear from you hope you’re doing well! I will check it out.

We’re probably rebuilding the Kohler. More affordable for him.
How are the Wheel Horses doing?
Good. I’m down to one, just the 520H, sold the 416 to a buddy who needed a tractor. Ouch!!!!
Can't sell it for parts, there's no parts left! LOL!
Biggest culprit is not changing the oil

Craig Arndt great. I have a friend that sells repower kits to put Honda’s etc on as well if it comes to that let me know...

Craig Arndt go to eBay and type in m12 master rebuild kit, or k301 master rebuild kit and that gets you most of the stuff you need
That’s why they call them grenade gears
That's true!
Do you need another engine
Yes I think that’s what he is going to try to do. Can’t find a crank for this mower/engine. So I said, best to find a Magnum 12 and just repower it.
I have a Kohler 12 hp it might need rebuilt it is out Of a gravely seems all completely it is located in southern Ohio
First!
