      Implying that 2 million soldiers, most of whom won't have a wish to kill their own people so reduce that down to maybe a few 100,000 nutters at most, will willingly take on 100 million all armed to the teeth... it's cute that you believe that they would win.

    • @ge2719
      @ge2719 6 років тому +26

      he thought he was being smart, repeating the logic that a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun, but replacing "gun" with "drugs". to try and make it seem like bad logic. trying to say that more guns is just generaly a bad thing, because "more drugs" is a "bad thing". but not necessarily. superficially it makes the more guns logic seem wrong, but once you think about it if we legalise a drug and make it so good people and companies can manufacture clean safe drugs and sell them, regulate and tax them. then the bad guys with drugs will dissappear practically over night.
      another example of why this logic makes no sense, is methodone clinics. literal good guys with drugs helping solve the problem of bad guys with drugs.

    • @danica6366
      @danica6366 6 років тому +26

      Graeme Evans but then pharmacists and doctors have trained and studied for years to be qualified in what they do and pharmacies/clinics are heavily regulated/maintained to prevent people from misusing drugs/malpractices from occuring. If there were a neighborhood where it was known to have multiple drug addicts around, one wouldn't pose the solution of giving everyone in the neighbourhood opioid analgesics so those can be given to the drug addicts when they encounter one. I think guns, like strong medicine, is something that needs to be handled by highly skilled people and not something anyone can just buy from anywhere

    • @bambi3845
      @bambi3845 6 років тому +10

      That's why I live in fear of genocide every day here in England. I'm always there thinking "Fuuuuuck, what if Theresa May decided to go on an ethnic cleansing spree, how would I possibly stop her without my guns?".
      Then I think to myself "wait a minute, the Earth is round, the government isn't run by lizard people in human costumes and that's obviously not going to happen, man I'm sure glad children in my country go to school without any statistical chance of getting massacred by a lunatic who bought a gun from the local corner shop without any background checks or licensing required."
      Also, being armed has nothing to do with it. If Trump finally went completely off his rocker and decided to send in the military to exterminate your town you would not stand a chance, armed or not, because it's the fucking military. What actually prevents that from happening is the fact that Trump doesn't have the power to do that and even if he tried, the military would in all likelihood refuse.
      It's democracy and the interconnected world we live in that prevents that, not that Trump is afraid of suffering minor casualties because the untrained civilian populace also possesses firearms. Also it's because, despite being an idiotic, racist, sexist piece of human trash; even Trump wouldn't go that far.

    The fact is in most active shooter situations, those with guns are afraid to use them, because the police might think *they* were the active shooters and in turn shoot *them.* This was said by the band playing during the Las Vegas shooting, who themselves were all armed.

    • @wheedler
      @wheedler 2 роки тому +10

      This is what I always think about in regards to the "good guy with a gun" argument. If you're a good guy who shoots a bad guy, you're just someone shooting someone else. How does another good guy know not to shoot you?

  • @GiratinaofFury
    @GiratinaofFury 7 років тому +37

    Adam makes an interesting point about arming a teacher in a mass shooting scenario. It's pretty scary. If a shooting breaks out, you're now entirely responsible for what happens. It's not like "Hero Mode" activates, most people would panic, because they are not desensitised to a state to consider taking a life, like the shooter has (it is a recurring issue that many past shootings were perpetrated by people who had no empathy and were desensitised to violence). Suddenly, you're now the one who is blamed if anyone dies, even yourself.
    It's that one element many gun advocates don't think about when they call for arming teachers.

      Funny how that works ain't it? Clearly the problem is that criminals are getting guns in other states and then bringing them back to states with high gun restrictions. So what we need to do is outlaw guns throughout the entire U.S. Then I'm sure there will be absolutely no way to illegally smuggle arms into the country the same way there has been for the last 200 years. This will ensure absolutely and totally that the only people in the country who are without firearms are law-abiding citizens who have few other options for personal defense. *chefs kiss*

    A British Army study found that soldiers on a “battle skills” range (where you have to move between positions, select cover etc), were 10x less accurate than on a gallery range. The same study found that accuracy was further degraded by a factor of 10 when there is an enemy shooting back, and by another 10x when the enemy has automatic weapons. That’s 1000x less accurate in combat than on a static range overall.
    If you want to be able to intervene in an “active shooter” scenario you need to have SAS-hostage rescue team level training in close quarter shooting. The SAS hostage rescue team invest roughly 1000 hours per man getting blokes up to the standard (starting with fully trained SAS soldiers remember).
    People who say that “a good guy with a gun will stop a bad guy with a gun” don’t know what they are talking about; a good guy with a gun is just as likely to kill other good guys, hostages, civilians and bystanders as he is to do anything helpful.

    1/5 hit rate usually probably at greater distances isnt that bad in the heat of the moment. 5 rounds can be fired from your pistol in less than 2 seconds. thats pretty quick still, to put down a dangerous target. and with most handgun magazines exceeding 10 rounds it averaging at least 2 shots on the target within a 4-5 second frame of time. of course very close quarters this number is much higher in accuracy.

      @@Annachrome Well hell, If the police are there to ensure people aren't breaking the law then let's use this logic to outlaw everything that could possibly be used to break the law. Then we've optimized our minimization of max risk so that police officers and firefighters alike never have to deal with dangerous situations ever again. Outlaw fire! Outlaw hands! Without hands I can guarantee rates of theft will go down and then so will rates of violent theft where police officers are potentially put in danger by responding to the light-fingered lad. Or we could acknowledge that people in these occupations accepted the risks involved when they took the job. If you don't want to respond to dangerous situations, don't be a firefighter, and don't be a police officer.

      So you think it's weird if I feel the same way about the freedom of speech, my protection against illegal search and seizure, my right to due process and fair trial by jury, my right to own property etc... Those ideas are just SO OLD, right? It might come as a profound shock to you that you are the not the only person that has every had a thought on this planet and that perhaps people who, DARE TO SPEAK IT, lived before you may have had ideas and proclamations about life, liberty, and individual rights. These ideas are the ENTIRE PREMISE my country was founded on. It's not some flippant centuries-old jest, it's what made it different from the rest of the entire world at the time. The whole world you know was built on the ideas of people from a very different time that yours. What do you think the English language is? Did YOU yourself come up with it or are all the words you use derived from people of a different time to yours? You are a profound idiot. If you live in a democratic country, then you better damn well be glad that all those people from a very different time thought exactly what they did. The 1st amendment to our Constitution grants me the protection of my expression, ideas and speech, the 4th protects me from extrajudicial force, the 5th protects me from corruption and property theft, and guess which one.... GUESS. WHICH. ONE. gives me the right to protect myself? The second amendment does. My government understands that it cannot provide protection for every single individual citizen constantly and therefore grants me the amazing right to bear arms and thus have the ability to defend myself. The Bill of Rights wasn't just some thought experiment, it was based on ACTUAL experience with tyranny and how best to grant citizens rights, protections, and freedoms. But of course, you know better don't you? You don't want to own a gun, fine... no one is making you own one, but Americans who decide to defend their lives with the Constitutional right given to them since the foundation of our country have the right to do so. No matter how much it twists your panties, and I hope you really, REALLY understand how much that "piece of paper signed by people from a very different time to ours" means to me when it grants me to the right to tell you to go fuck yourself. I love it, I love it to death.

    • @kirijocafe7066

      Because you have to be some right wing bigot to support gun rights eh? I don't advocate the NRA's full tilt stance that everyone should have a weapon because there are mentally unstable people out there who shouldn't own a gun. But to believe for one second that either raising the age to buy a gun or banning them outright is a viable option is absurd. The police and armed guards aren't always readily available to protect citizens when they're in danger. And criminals will always find a way to obtain weapons. So why disarm yourself when we have such a fragile society? The US needs to take a closer look as to why this is happening. It's more to do with the nations' mentality than it is to do with an object. In countries that respect and understand what weapons are used for, people are much more responsible in that regard. Today we see growing levels of apathy and a concerning amount of people with mental illnesses able to purchase guns thanks to the negligence of the government and consistent flaws in the current background checks.

Semiautomatic handguns aren't much less effective than semiautomatic rifles, especially AR-15s, which fire a very small bullet.

    NYPD only requires their officers to qualify every six months, and they only fire fifty rounds for each firearm qualification.
    Outside of qualification, officers get no range time unless they seriously go out of their way to do so, and only on their own time. So that 100 rounds per year is all the vast majority of them are firing.
    I'm a casual gun owner with a shoestring budget and I tend to shoot at least 250-300 rounds per month, so 100 rounds per year is nothing.
    Also, it should be mentioned that all handguns issued by NYPD have at least a 12 pound trigger. For reference, a factory Glock trigger is 5.5 pounds. Heavier triggers significantly hamper accuracy, especially for inexperienced shooters.

      Exactly. I'm a teacher and I have not got time to go through gun training so I can be forced to uphold some idiots' ideas about the 2nd amendment.

    "If we take the guns away, the shooting might escalate"
    I know it's meant to be sarcastic, but I can't even begin to imagine the amount of extra shooting that will come from the well trained "from my cold dead hands" nutters, if you overtly try to confiscate their guns, one could argue shootings could escalate, in a civil war.

      Ban the sale of ammunition to civilians.
      Problem solved without taking away anyone's gun.

      @@LittleMAC78 If you can wave a magic wand and ban ammunition sales to civilians, you might as well wave the same wand and ban guns. People currently manufacture ammunition in their garage in order to save money and also for those who care a lot about quality and accuracy, these equipment are out there and many people who own lots of guns also have the equipment to make ammunition.
