Great podcast. I am a youth soccer coach and I'm a master's crossfitter. There's a huge difference in just playing a sport and wanting to reach first place. Same with crossfit and determining what you want and why you do it.

Exercising is like medicine you do it to better your health in conjunction with your nutrition, mobility and sleep as well as social, spiritual and psychological practice to create a complete spectrum or matrix of optimal quality of life. Training is completely different where the purpose of nutrition and sleep and mobility is solely to create better quality training and or performance and many times you see people who excel is various fascets as a result of training have a difficult time creating balance between this selfish pursuit of excellence in a specialized activity and their friendships, relationships, their self image, their outlook on life and the world around them, etc begins to become very shaky and difficult to manage because this pursuit requires so much from an individual.. I think training is good, but it calls for even more attention and energy to be spent in those other areas in order to maintain equilibrium on a complete scale or matrix of that individuals health.. It can be dicey but it can work.. A great example would be Rich Froning or Rickson Gracie who managed to incorporate their family in to their pursuit to make them stronger and performing optimally for much longer than a guy like mike Tyson for example.

Training = short term healthy life. Exercising = Long term healthy life.

The only reason I do Crossfit is the community makes it fun. If I didn't workout with them I'd have stopped years ago. And you expect people to not workout with those that keep them motivated for a whole year or min of 6 months? And on top of expensive monthly gym fees to pay the month fees for the program which are more than the gym? Or to convince the owners and coaches that you're going to be in the gym but not part of it doing your own thing? That's kinda rude for that long. Heck, my gym isn't even open but for one session on sat and it's for team workouts where there isn't any room or equipment for anything else but that. Do that many people actually have that much disposable income or resources available to them? The people I know sure don't.

They don't expect anyone to do anything they aren't willing to do. I bet you could get some of those people you work out with to do it as well, and if you just explain to the gym owner what your training goals are and why you chose the program they'd likely be cool with it.

Good episode as always, you say that you don't view one as better than the other but constantly referring to 'just exercising' kind of implies that you might?

I see what you mean. But no, if people are getting out and being active in ANY way we support that. Myself personally (CTP) I am "just exercising" according to our definition. I'm currently just doing our class workouts at my gym and having a great fucking time. I'm just not laser focused on a particular performance or aesthetic goal at the moment and that's fine. My current priority is just having fun. Eventually I'll switch to "training". We're just making a case that their is a difference. Semantics maybe yea, but I hope people catch our drift.
