- Spiked Online chief political reporter Brendan O’Neill reacts to the “woke mob” going “absolutely bananas” over Stephen Fry’s Christmas message where he condemned anti-Semitism.
The actor and broadcaster called out the surge in anti-Semitism in the United Kingdom in his heartfelt Christmas message.
“What is my message this Christmas? Simple truth that we are all brothers and sisters. It's naive, but it's as good a message as any other,” Fry said.
Mr O’Neill condemned people who took offence to the actor’s message and slammed Fry on social media.
“They called him a narcissist, they said he's a genocide apologist in reference to Israel's war with Hamas,” Mr O’Neill told Sky News host James Macpherson.
“They really went for the jugular with Stephen Fry and these are the kind of people who pose as anti-racist, who think everything is racist.”

We are trying to emulate the US and as a result we’re adopting their very weird way of life. It’s turning into a depressing dystopia over there and if we’re not careful, it’ll get out of control here too.

Too many people couldn't be bothered to react ten years ago when people like myself were telling them how it would end up. They chose to believe their lifestyles were bullet proof and give me the side eye instead. Well.... look how it turned out.

What we have done, is put everything else into these Group A and Group B into Group A.6.8.9 vs Group B.2.5.1, the problem with this, we aren't solving the part, Article 1 - Don't kill civilians, why? Because Group A is under clause 6, WHAT??? And now I'm also an Anti-Clause 6. what?? And for some reason I'm also Anti-Clause 8.

Wasn't the whole point that if we put a ring around groups of people such as "Jewish Commmunity" , we appear to picking "sides". That message seems lost. Many proponents over the last 20+ years, of an increasingly hardline, Israeli Govt, are happy labelling anyone pointing out the horrors of the present conflict as "Hammas" supporters and "Anti-Semites". Its a coreographed thing. Now, I don't think when tiny babies are being pulled out of the rubble, that they are "Hammas suppporters". But over 20k Palestinians have lost their lives, and many will NOT be supporters.
We seem to be stuck in a "two wrongs make a right" scanario.
Hammas is problematic, and complicated, they were electected, by a population who have been pushed in that direction, by a hardline Israeli Govt. What they did 7 October is horific, But its what happens when you push, aleniate and refuse to talk to the people you oppose, because it benefits you're majority. That is no more democratic.
Stop thinking in black and white "Right/wrong", and just urge peace through talking with everyone. Stand with everyone, not just "Jewish #Community" who has a similar concentration of left/right wing, righteous, nutters, saints and sinners as any other "communuity".

Stephen has delivered a lovely message in a delicate manner, he has kept it together and presented a peaceful, thought provoking and meaningful contribution without any bias intended. I enjoy diversity, when travelling abroad or meeting travelers but there is no value to having them take up residence when they are so culturally distinct. Clashes are inevitable if not on the streets (as in some European countries) then certainly in the halls of power if the host nation is so DUMB as to permit them representational power. Stephen Fry is a highly educated, intelligent man. Among other things, what the Israeli-Palestine conflict brought to light, is how low the standards of higher education are. All those fancy universities and their students don't know history, can't learn from it and are unable to think critically.
Anna, the standards in universities have been lowered by design, its all about lowering the bar to get better stats so they look good in league tables.
I know someone who is a lecturer, and the things that are accepted, and allowed these days would never have been tolerated 40 years ago.

I’m going to stick my neck out now and confess that in the last month I have made anti semetic comments and formed anti semetic opinions based on Israel. After listening to Stephen Fry and some others I have come to see that I have been wrong. I have to kick myself and think of the Jewish people I have known in my life who are all decent and good. It’s people like Ben Shapiro who drove me to an illogical conclusion, but he doesn’t speak for Jewish people, he only speaks for himself and a handful of idiots. To be honest I’m ashamed of some of the things I’ve thought and said over the last couple of weeks. I’m generally not at all racist or prejudiced so I’m quite shocked at how easily I had these thoughts.

I am French born, Paris France is my home. My parents were children of WW2 and my grandfathers soldiers and prisoners of WW2. I was told and reminded of the real history of that era - never to forget. Hitler did not get to be the monster that he became without the approval of followers, interested parties and the silent enablers.
History repeats itself. What develops is the result of either opening our eyes/speaking out or putting our heads in the sand/silently enabling.

I am a big fan of Fry, always have been. His message while nice and lovely, completely avoids the fact that Israel is commiting atrocities. 'Whatever your opinion on...' is a weak, feeble cop out. It's not just anti-semitism that is on the rise, it's also anti-muslim sentiments as well, yet, he chose not to address that or include it in his message. THAT is the issue, not the warm and gentle message.

Impressive as Stephen Fry's speech was - and how valid - I am afraid Fry is speaking up only because HE is affected. The irony is that he is now being "accused" of being a Zionist, as if there was something wrong with Jewish people supporting or wanting to live in our ancient, historic and ancestral homeland. And who has allowed that calumny to grow?
Like the self-seeking Miriam Margolyes, Fry has added his voice on more than one occasion to openly and unfairly criticise Israel, a place he has never visited and whose history (by his own admission) he is ignorant of.
For example, he appeared with Margolyes on a programme with David Baddiel who was pushing his book "Jews Don’t Count”. Fry, without a moment's hesitation, threw Israel under the bus (as did Baddiel himself) in insisting that just because he was Jewish he didn’t have to agree with Israel’s policies. This would have been a valid point if he hadn't been so virulently antagonistic and contemptuous towards those policies, even though Israel is the only true democracy in the Middle East.
Fry not only distanced himself from Israel, but in fact delegitimised and denigrated the Jewish State. He didn't educate himself to see the lies spread by the Mainstream media. He simply listened to the anti-Zionist rhetoric and swallowed it hook line and sinker.
For such an "intellectual giant" his failure to study and check the facts was astounding.
His defence of the Palestinian regime, controlled by a proscribed terrorist group has always been loud and vocal. His - and Margolyes - seeming ignorance of the treatment meted out to homosexuals in Gaza, which would place his or her life in danger were they to live there, has always amazed me. His silence in the face of evidence of their persecution under the Hamas government - to say nothing of how women are second class citizens - goes against the idea that Fry is a warrior for the downtrodden.
Now that the hatred built up against Israel (by years of misinformation and a concealing of the truth), has come home to roost, Fry isn’t happy. Well, Mr. Fry, as you sow, so shall you reap.
You are learning, the hard way, that for some people, just having a drop of Jewish blood in your veins - however much of an “atheist’ you are, makes you the object of their hatred.
