This reminds of my parents. I'm half Chinese and half Mexican and my dad's parents (Chinese heritage) were not fond of my mother at first. My grandmother eventually grew to tolerate my mother because my brother and I were born, but at this present time, my grandfather has still not adjusted to my father choosing my mother as a partner. He is very religious and has conservative views. Then with my mother's side (Mexican heritage), my grandmother always wants my mom to do what feels right for her, so my Mexican grandmother never had an issue with my father, as long as he took proper care of her she was content. I never got to meet my grandfather from my mother's side, but my mom told me that he didn't want her to be with another race that was not Latino. My grandfather was not pleased with my mother's relationship. Still to this day, there are always going to be arguments with my father and mother about their differences in culture. It's nice to see other Lasians, but it's not easy especially when there is no family support.
@@nothanks7475 No, I don't. My dad grew up with no shoes so he's grown accustom to that lifestyle and my mom likes living in a clean house and having no shoes makes it a lot more easy to clean. However, I did grown up with my grandmother(from my mom's side) when I was young and I always wore shoes in her house. When I visit my mom's family, we wear shoes in the house. When I visit my father's family, we remove our shoes by the front door.
My grandma always told me if I found someone who I deeply loved to not let other people ruin that for you because at the end of the day it’s your life you’re living and not the people who disapprove. She also said if my parents didn’t approve then who cares because I’ll probably live longer than them anyways 💀
It is true... As an adult you have the right to make your own decisions, live with the consequences, and be responsible about your choice. It is also important to remember, interracial marriage is not that easy.. you will have a mountain of issues to address and a lot of compromises compared to same race/culture-marriage. Be brave and I wish the best of luck. I speak based on my own experience and others. Most of the time our elders warn us how difficult it is to have interracial marriage because they have known from observation and their knowledge about the issues, not because they are racist or anything. So it's good to have an open mind, before it is too late.

I’m Hispanic/white American and my boyfriend is Korean. He’s been living in the states for many years and although we have been dating for 4 years his mom still disapproves of our relationship. It’s sad because she sees me as someone that isn’t a good look for her family. Luckily she lives in Korea and don’t have to physically see her. She has yet to meet me even when she spent a few months in the states. My boyfriend is very supportive and tries to make his mother understand but she is so cold hearted..
Something similar happened to my cousin. We're brazilian and she's mixed race (black dad and white mom). She met her husband in Brazil through church and they got together but unfortunately the family wouldn't accept their relationship. But eventually they got married and are now expecting their first child! And recently her husband's sister also married a foreigner! Lol I just wish I could see his parents reactions
My dad was the same. I made a deal with him that he just had to meet him once and I 'promised' I'd take his opinion into consideration. From the first day he met him, my dad liked him and supported our marriage.

Ich finde trotzdem für ein Kind das praktisch nichts mit Deutschland zu tun hat und mit niemanden in seiner Familie Deutsch reden kann ihr Sprachniveau sehr beeindruckend. Ich denke sie hat „ist von Mexiko” mit „kommt aus Mexiko” verwechselt, oder versucht es über die Englische Ausdrucksweise zu sagen, was ja wohl passieren kann wenn man eine Sprache nicht so oft üben kann, bzw. wenn man sieht wie ähnlich sich Deutsch und Englisch sind und sie wohl beides spricht.
I think it's perfectly fine that the wife doesn't speak Korean. It ensures that kids will be fluent in Spanish, Korean, and English since husband and wife communicates in English.
I want her to speak Korean, because it can be very lonely living in a country where you don't speak the predominant language. It could open up a lot of hobbies, social activities, and even jobs that could bring her a lot of joy

She will be able to get to a point where she can go shopping, order food, function as a citizen ... but she will never be fluent enough to joke around and become a fully immersed part of the community. And I'm saying, that's ok. Her best bet is to become part of Mexican Korean community. However small, I'm sure there are few, and she can lead a happy life that way You have to be realistic.
It's better if she does. I can attest to that , it's easier to integrate within a community and life will be lonely if you can't communicate. Speaking from experience.

Exactly. As a language teacher, I can assert that reaching fluency at her age will be extremely tough. She can try her best but she also has adult duties that take time from just conversing and practicing the language unlike her children who are immersed all day

theres always amawzing hope in being able to win over the parents at some point, some people take until the grandchildren to get on their parents good side, others a lot later, don't always expect to be good at the start. if this is you, have hope and continue your relationship and dont give up hope just because you dont have parental approval at first, parents just want the best for their kids and its difficult to see that in a short amount of time, it's understandable if theyre not cooperative at first, but keep fighting because it'll be worth it in the long run and is all apart of a relationship
This situation made me think of the time when I tested my own mother who was in her sixties and this was like more than 30 years ago. I just wanted to know her reaction if I were to marry someone of a different race. She said it doesn’t matter to her the race, color and nationality and even religion. What was important was that we were happy. I wonder why some parents impose their preference when it comes to their children choosing their life partners. Is it something conditioned by the society they lived in or a natural prejudice? The father really looked silly now after he had initially even refused to look at the daughter-in-law’s face. It was not only rude but also disrespectful to his own son.

From a Mexican living in The Netherlands, with a trilingual household and a Dutch partner... I come to watch these stories on UA-cam to remind myself that it could be harder. I feel you Elizabeth, it can be all so though, stressing, sad. But, when you look at what wonderful children you're raising, then it's all worth it.
This happened with me too, they don't accept us until first baby. But now, after 3y married, her(my korean wife) parents forced her to abandon me and our daughter and force the divorce. She has many traumas because they used abuse and aggression as discipline... and we always had problems when she wanted use the same kind of "discipline" with our daughter or even me. So... last time we had problems, they made blackmail to her and forced to left us, start the divorce and zero contact(even with our daughter 4y old), and they don't want people see her as a single mother. Now... after 7 months... divorce is Octuber 10th and after that I'll back to my country with my daughter.
Just cause people are old they are thought of as wise.... wisdom has nothing to do with age, it has everything to do with your decisions and actions. Hope the couple have a great life ahead and their kids appreciate their parents courage.
Wow this show is really eye opening. The US could use a similar show !! Korea seems to undergoing a huge cultural shift from homogenous society to that of a mixed and international society. Disheartening to see so many narrow minded attitudes yet also refreshing and hopeful to see how many Koreans are changing those attitudes and views through kindness and love. I was hesitant when my sister got married with another race as well, but when you see your nieces and nephews, all of my concerned seemed childish. We cannot dictate the heart, all we can hope for is for them to form a loving family unit.

I’m Chinese Canadian. My parents immigrated 45 years ago and still imagine that their 3 kids will marry within the community. It didn’t happen. I always had a crush on mixed asian-western and when I saw my husband, I did the first step and asked him for a date! He is half Vietnamese and half French Canadian. My chinese mother who had a more modern education accepted my husband quickly but my very conservative chinese father only approved our union after the birth of our son …seven years later. My in-law, who are more western mentality, welcomed me the first day we meet. His French Canadian grandmother passed away on our first year of dating, and she asked to see us and she apologized to not be able to attend our wedding one day but she gave to us her blessing. At that period, we were only in the beginning of our relationship but his family were more financially comfortable than my immigrants family and they never look me down, they took the time to know me better and treated me like their futur daughter in law since the first day. I was very ashamed by my father hateful behaviour. I confront more than once my father, actually he didn’t speak for a year. I think parents have their ideal, and we need to let them absorb the choc because after all, it might first sight love you but not for them. But now, since we have a family now, everytime I have an argument with my husband…my parents takes my husband side!
We have alot of interracial marriages and dating in America. Nobody really cares at all. As a Latino, I really wouldn't care if my daughter gets with a non Spanish person as long as she is happy then I am happy.

In the East Asian （ specifically Japanese and Korean i experienced mostly）world , a lot of people listen a lot to the parents , if its right or not , a lot of the kids will do as they say , if they think that a non-korean or non japanese Isnt the right partner. Some of these parents even have a issue if theyre childs partner is actually also Asian but simply not the same ethnicity, As the cultures can still be more or less different. My family from Thailand is ethnically Thai and south chinese mixed and non of them have issues with someone whos not chinese/thai… my ex was korean （years ago already） and i knew from him that his parents were never ok with ANYthing else than a korean gf… I thought ok maybe it changes with me （i hoped） , didnt happen. He ended it bcs of his parents not being ok with a non korean, Some friend i had experienced the same and she is japanese while her ex was korean ,yet her now ex bf‘s AND her own parents were not ok with it , even tho japan and korea are both east asian , the cultures have similiarities but also differences, but the differences for both the parents were enough to not be ok with it… anyhow , she is now married to a japanese as her parents liked , tho they are a little bit asian mixed in the fam, as her male japanese cousin is married to a Thai woman with 2 half Thai/Japanese kids… tho theyre the only non japanese in her fam. Anyhow , im married to a South Asian man （from india） now ,while i am Thai and chinese mixed （culturally more thai raised tho）
I understand why most koreans, japanese and chinese would never fight their families to date a foreigner. The relationship can end in a few months or years, so they think it does not worth to fight the whole family for someone who can leave someday. However, when there are kids involved, the family should just accept and understand. The couple can break up someday, but the kids will be part of that family forever.

Im married to European and till this day my mother inlaw still hates me . And she talks bad about me to be relatives and friends. I understand her language. I let my husband know . But she tells him its not true. My son understands and speaks their language. And he hears his grandmother talk bad about me . Which is so sad. I just tell him not to pay attention to her.

The Korean parents are about my age and yet didn't want a non-Korean daughter-in-law. This is really odd as obviously Elisabeth is more native than European, probably of Nahua or Maya ethnicity. There are at least three waves of Northeastern Asian and Siberian migrations into the Americas, the last one are the Eskaleut speaking people including Aleut, Yupik and Inuit who look just like Northern Chinese. Also, Kan is the most common Mayan family name, like Kim for Koreans.
Mexican pal here. Unless people belong directly to a Maya or Nahua community, we Mexicans are a melting pot of all heritages, even within families. My best friend's last name is Shimomoto, obviously from her Japanese relatives that arrived to Mexico 6-7 generations ago. She doesn't have any Asian features nor could possibly pass for one, though her brother does.
American married to a Lao. I was not approved by the parents for marriage. They finally accepted me to make there daughter happy. You will never be fully accepted ever. My wife’s parents wanted my wife to marry some Asian guy who owned a business or had a high income. I have to walk on eggshells when I hang out with my wife’s family. They are really nice and are great grandparents. If my wife left me or something happened to her. The parents would treat me like crap. It sucks.
That is sad... Luckily my family is westernized and more open. Many of my cousins married white, Filipinos, Iranian, Mexican, Japanese,etc.. and everyone gets along well.... wish more families were like that.

My parents were traditional but they were open as my great aunt married a French man. Therefore, my parents were open from the beginning and I am proud of that. It depends on how you want to raise your kid. For instance, I never grew up having to make my bed cause at the end of the day it would just get messy again. Personally, I would like to have my kids make their beds as it teaches them to have good cleaning habits.

I have question to ask, I watched a few interracial couples on this show. For some reason when they marry their Korean partners. The partners start to look Korean! I don’t understand how but they really do. For example, I watched a black and Korean couple/a white and Korean couple and now a Mexican and Korean couple. I don’t know if it's the make-up they are putting on or what but she doesn't look Mexican more Korean.
It's not that difficult. I was once in Bogota, colombia and one of the young girls there felt an attraction to a korean guy...they had very similar look. Indigenous Americans migrated from East asia after all so there are some genetic similarities

This reminds of my parents. I'm half Chinese and half Mexican and my dad's parents (Chinese heritage) were not fond of my mother at first. My grandmother eventually grew to tolerate my mother because my brother and I were born, but at this present time, my grandfather has still not adjusted to my father choosing my mother as a partner. He is very religious and has conservative views. Then with my mother's side (Mexican heritage), my grandmother always wants my mom to do what feels right for her, so my Mexican grandmother never had an issue with my father, as long as he took proper care of her she was content. I never got to meet my grandfather from my mother's side, but my mom told me that he didn't want her to be with another race that was not Latino. My grandfather was not pleased with my mother's relationship. Still to this day, there are always going to be arguments with my father and mother about their differences in culture. It's nice to see other Lasians, but it's not easy especially when there is no family support.

However, I did grown up with my grandmother(from my mom's side) when I was young and I always wore shoes in her house. When I visit my mom's family, we wear shoes in the house. When I visit my father's family, we remove our shoes by the front door.

It is true... As an adult you have the right to make your own decisions, live with the consequences, and be responsible about your choice. It is also important to remember, interracial marriage is not that easy.. you will have a mountain of issues to address and a lot of compromises compared to same race/culture-marriage. Be brave and I wish the best of luck. I speak based on my own experience and others. Most of the time our elders warn us how difficult it is to have interracial marriage because they have known from observation and their knowledge about the issues, not because they are racist or anything. So it's good to have an open mind, before it is too late.

I’m Hispanic/white American and my boyfriend is Korean. He’s been living in the states for many years and although we have been dating for 4 years his mom still disapproves of our relationship. It’s sad because she sees me as someone that isn’t a good look for her family. Luckily she lives in Korea and don’t have to physically see her. Something similar happened to my cousin. We're brazilian and she's mixed race (black dad and white mom). She met her husband in Brazil through church and they got together but unfortunately the family wouldn't accept their relationship. I think it's perfectly fine that the wife doesn't speak Korean. It ensures that kids will be fluent in Spanish, Korean, and English since husband and wife communicates in English.
I want her to speak Korean, because it can be very lonely living in a country where you don't speak the predominant language. It could open up a lot of hobbies, social activities, and even jobs that could bring her a lot of joy

And I'm saying, that's ok. Her best bet is to become part of Mexican Korean community. However small, I'm sure there are few, and she can lead a happy life that way You have to be realistic.

Exactly. As a language teacher, I can assert that reaching fluency at her age will be extremely tough. She can try her best but she also has adult duties that take time from just conversing and practicing the language unlike her children who are immersed all day

theres always amawzing hope in being able to win over the parents at some point, some people take until the grandchildren to get on their parents good side, others a lot later, don't always expect to be good at the start. if this is you, have hope and continue your relationship and dont give up hope just because you dont have parental approval at first, parents just want the best for their kids and its difficult to see that in a short amount of time, it's understandable if theyre not cooperative at first, but keep fighting because it'll be worth it in the long run and is all apart of a relationship
This situation made me think of the time when I tested my own mother who was in her sixties and this was like more than 30 years ago. I just wanted to know her reaction if I were to marry someone of a different race. She said it doesn’t matter to her the race, color and nationality and even religion. What was important was that we were happy.

This happened with me too, they don't accept us until first baby. But now, after 3y married, her(my korean wife) parents forced her to abandon me and our daughter and force the divorce. She has many traumas because they used abuse and aggression as discipline... and we always had problems when she wanted use the same kind of "discipline" with our daughter or even me. So... last time we had problems, they made blackmail to her and forced to left us, start the divorce and zero contact(even with our daughter 4y old), and they don't want people see her as a single mother. Now... after 7 months... divorce is Octuber 10th and after that I'll back to my country with my daughter.

Wow this show is really eye opening. The US could use a similar show !! Korea seems to undergoing a huge cultural shift from homogenous society to that of a mixed and international society. Disheartening to see so many narrow minded attitudes yet also refreshing and hopeful to see how many Koreans are changing those attitudes and views through kindness and love. I’m Chinese Canadian. My parents immigrated 45 years ago and still imagine that their 3 kids will marry within the community. It didn’t happen. I always had a crush on mixed asian-western and when I saw my husband, I did the first step and asked him for a date! He is half Vietnamese and half French Canadian. My chinese mother who had a more modern education accepted my husband quickly but my very conservative chinese father only approved our union after the birth of our son …seven years later. My in-law, who are more western mentality, welcomed me the first day we meet. His French Canadian grandmother passed away on our first year of dating, and she asked to see us and she apologized to not be able to attend our wedding one day but she gave to us her blessing. At that period, we were only in the beginning of our relationship but his family were more financially comfortable than my immigrants family and they never look me down, they took the time to know me better and treated me like their futur daughter in law since the first day. I was very ashamed by my father hateful behaviour. I confront more than once my father, actually he didn’t speak for a year. I think parents have their ideal, and we need to let them absorb the choc because after all, it might first sight love you but not for them. But now, since we have a family now, everytime I have an argument with my husband…my parents takes my husband side!
We have alot of interracial marriages and dating in America. Nobody really cares at all. As a Latino, I really wouldn't care if my daughter gets with a non Spanish person as long as she is happy then I am happy.

I understand why most koreans, japanese and chinese would never fight their families to date a foreigner. The relationship can end in a few months or years, so they think it does not worth to fight the whole family for someone who can leave someday.

The Korean parents are about my age and yet didn't want a non-Korean daughter-in-law. This is really odd as obviously Elisabeth is more native than European, probably of Nahua or Maya ethnicity. There are at least three waves of Northeastern Asian and Siberian migrations into the Americas, the last one are the Eskaleut speaking people including Aleut, Yupik and Inuit who look just like Northern Chinese. Also, Kan is the most common Mayan family name, like Kim for Koreans.
Mexican pal here. Unless people belong directly to a Maya or Nahua community, we Mexicans are a melting pot of all heritages, even within families. My best friend's last name is Shimomoto, obviously from her Japanese relatives that arrived to Mexico 6-7 generations ago. She doesn't have any Asian features nor could possibly pass for one, though her brother does.

American married to a Lao. I was not approved by the parents for marriage. They finally accepted me to make there daughter happy. You will never be fully accepted ever. My wife’s parents wanted my wife to marry some Asian guy who owned a business or had a high income. I have to walk on eggshells when I hang out with my wife’s family. They are really nice and are great grandparents. If my wife left me or something happened to her. The parents would treat me like crap. It sucks.

It depends on how you want to raise your kid. For instance, I never grew up having to make my bed cause at the end of the day it would just get messy again. Personally, I would like to have my kids make their beds as it teaches them to have good cleaning habits.

You know that idea of teaching the kids to do chores is such a Latino thing because what they're supposed to do every Sunday morning but cleaning the house? 😂 When I was a kid that was my chore too, do my bed and clean my bedroom before going to school, now that I'm an adult that situation doesn't apply anymore but I was taught that too.
As an Asian I thought house chores were an everyday routines for kids

@@juules215 Nah, it is a non-white American thing. A lot of POC in America do these same chores in the house. When I visited my White classmate in middle school for a school project, she never took off her shoes and disobeyed her mom in front of me. It's crazy

It’s the mother who teach the kids manners. Which parents lack today in any culture. I have 3 girls n I taught them manners, respect, culture that school can’t teach. I end up with a social worker,medical examiner, n in the works with my last a therapist of the mind . All in America. Key is parents teaching.
It's a cultural thing, the far east asians (china taiwan japan and korea) generally are against marrying outside their ethnicity.

I have question to ask, I watched a few interracial couples on this show. For some reason when they marry their Korean partners. The partners start to look Korean! I don’t understand how but they really do. For example, I watched a black and Korean couple/a white and Korean couple and now a Mexican and Korean couple. I don’t know if it's the make-up they are putting on or what but she doesn't look Mexican more Korean.
It's not that difficult. I was once in Bogota, colombia and one of the young girls there felt an attraction to a korean guy...they had very similar look. Indigenous Americans migrated from East asia after all so there are some genetic similarities

I thought she looked biracial at 1st until she said she was mexican. Think since American Indians got pushed to migrate in Mexico, etc they look almost asian since American Indians are actually asian decent. She is beautiful as well as the children. I pray that the dad's family will have a softened heart to accept them all soon. 🕊🤍🕊
This kind of did bother me at first because me myself I’m Mexican American and I always wanted to date Korean as well but the one thing I was nervous about if my family wouldn’t accept it, but after that, I noticed that they wouldn’t care because my sister is married to Filipino, but actually he half filipino and he wasian but the one thing I was a little nervous about if the parents would accept me as well but I don’t think that’s all family though

as someone who speaks fluent English, A little spanish and german, lmao the children literally spoke english/german... I'm Mexican, Korean, and german, this is the easiest way to speak to Koreans.
