Man, I miss your builds, this is great! Thank you for being real and including those things we all would do. Love the tip on flipping the board higher up so you don't see the pocket holes. You two make a GREAT TEAM!!
You and I are a lot a like. Your mannerisms and phrasing is just like me. I’m a white guy from Dallas,TX . My wife is Puerto Rican from New Jersey. She can hear you narrating your videos when I’m watching it on my phone. Yesterday you said Waller when talking about handling TubaFours and today when you cabinet fell you said “I almost died” . I’m sure there a ton of guys like us out there. I think why you’ve been so successful because are relatable. Keep up the great work!!
Sorry for all the comments but I have to add..... it was absolutely a budget build. Get a price from any cabinet shop and you'll see..... that closet would cost SEVERAL thousand dollars. Probably between $7k and $10k!! Again it looks fantastic. This is probably the coolest thing I have seen you build so far!!
WOW!! I've was a cabinet builder my entire adult life and I don't think I have ever seen a closet designed and built that a - used space so efficiently and b - also looked so good. Usually it is one or the other..... by that I mean usually pretty closets sacrifice space to be proportional. That turned out amazing.
First, I love that you share your mistakes. I don't feel so alone. 🙂 Second, really nice build, done in just 14 minutes! Great material choices, and nothing is over- or under-done construction-wise. Last, I love the choice of that hardwood top for the drawer case. That is a really nice finishing touch that makes the project pop! Thanks so much for this video. Bookmarking it.
Closet renovation is a great project for beginners and intermediate woodworkers. Designing, plywood carcass build, drawer construction, installing slides, edge banding, working with uneven walls and more. A lot of valuable all around experience is gained by tackling this type of build. Great stuff, Matt! 🤛🏽🇺🇸
I continue to watch and re-watch your videos. There is always such great content...not only the build ideas themselves, it is the entire process you film that provide so many tips, tricks ideas that could pertain to so many other projects. Great Job Matt....love your Channel and your creative flare! (FYI...it is a huge help that you always provide links to the tools and products used in each of your videos!)
Mr and Mrs wow!!! You do realize all the projects are going to make hubby want ALLOT more tools! As a wife I’m more than elated about this so I can get all the outdated old furniture out and update some builder grade crap we have. You are inspiring us!! He has the skills from his dad who was a cabinet maker!!!!
Wow what a difference! Your closet looks fantastic! Mrs 731 is a great designer! Yes I love the cost break down! I am glad you also show the problems you had and showing how you solved them. Thanks, great video!
It's like yall can read minds! The wife and I were just talking about doing this to our master walk in closet! We decided to look at some you tube videos on "how to" and bamb! There was your new video!! Lol! Thank you!
Nice build. The walnut top really enhances the look. Resembles one of the nicer prefab closet organizers but of course there's the satisfaction of building it yourself. I installed a couple prefabs in the last two years and realized there was very little that I couldn't make myself.
Man, I been loving the content! Especially the video on great gifts. I shared the free gift to all my fellow brothers in Christ and man did it hit home. My question is where do you get your shirts from? I’m planning on buying a couple from your store. I live the blend of our faith with our hobby.
I tell you what....California Closet has *NUTHIN* on Arkansas Closets! That turned out fantastic. That touch of walnut really turned it up to 11. Nicely done!
Fun stuff. The first thing I ever built was converting our under stair closet to a pantry. The couple cupboards meant to be our pantry would never have been enough. Plus if the food isn't visible to my wife and kids in a deep cupboard it might as well not exist. Second project was a closet redesign. We downsized from a 2,800 sq ft house way out at the edge of the suburbs to a 1,700 sq ft two story condo. Talk about NEEDING to maximize space. Although now that I've watched your video I'm thinking mine kind of looks like crap and I should redo it :) Anyway it was the first things I ever did that required tools more than a drill. I had a blast.
Naw. Massca had the jig special made for me and sent it as a gift. The board was also a one off. There is an MDF version video several weeks back on the channel
Loved the project. I'm in the middle of my closet make over. It's a long narrow box which limits the design opinions. And that plywood is $95 a sheet out here. It's a blessing to only need two.
Nice work. May I suggest next time you build some drawers have sides of the drawers lap the front and rear when doing a butt joint. It will give more strength and less change of a front or rear falling off with the pushing and pulling. A rabbit joint is the next best joint option.
If putting pocket holes in walnut (or cherry) is a sin, I need to head to confession! I also love moving the unit in through the window. That's problem solving at its best! Another great build, Matt. Mrs. 731 should start a closet design buisness.
I can't wait to get our first home, and probably do the same thing to the potential closest we would have. By then, I'll gain enough woodworking skills
Matt, I know you have some tool recommendations in your videos, but (and I don't know exactly what I'm asking here) all my stuff seems to break way too fast. I bought a sliding ryobi compound miter saw as my first "big" purchase. I've not used it all that much, but I think it's already not cutting a perfect straight line. I tried to watch a video on aligning it, but maybe I'm too dumb. I can't figure out what's wrong. I haven't even burned through 1 blade yet. I replaced the moulding in our home (that's a suck job btw), and already my ryobi brad nailer has stopped shooting out brads. I used the 3 in 1 oil. I cleaned it. I've tried to figure out if something was jammed. Watched videos on taking it apart, but haven't gotten the guts to try that. I also bought a hand held airless paint sprayer for like $200 a couple years ago. The damn thing after a few projects (like repainting the closet, laundry room, and interior doors) is already spraying badly and dripping. I cleaned it after every use. Kept good care of it. So I bought a new spray tip. That didn't solve the problem. I feel like this pattern is a "me problem". I don't know. I'm just frustrated that I'm just a guy doing household projects here and there and none of my tools (except my drill) ever seem to last. All together that's probably around $600 worth of tools that aren't working properly. It's frustrating.
Love the project! No budget hate here, but was just wondering where you like to get your drawer slides from? Recently built a base cabinet for the garage/shop, and decent slides were a bit unexpected price shock. Especially when you start stacking them up for # of drawers. Love to hear what you do for buying these, thanks and God bless!
Thank you for the video! Question? Around 10 minutes, you’re building the 8’ cabinet, when you temporarily used some blue plastic items to keep the top in place as you finished nailing it. What were they? I didn’t see them in the tools list
How do you measure the drawers themselves? I have a heck of a time making the drawers the right size for the opening I have. I end up with (on a 4 drawer cabinet) four drawers all different sizes. I am definitely over thinking it, but every time I have to make drawers, I just dread it. It would be nice to see some video showing how to calculate drawer sizes and the gap between them and everything.
If your wife ever says; “Honey, next time you have time…….” Just start puttin on your shoes because she really means “right now.” Let me know if you need other marriage advice!! Superb work BTW. Getting ready to update our closet in a similar fashion.
Great video and design, sir! Clean and functional! One question: Did you consider 1/2” ply? Would be plenty strong enough in this application and lighter/easier to install. I saw you wrestling with that 3/4” sheet at the saw and felt my back tightening up!
Do you have a method of tracking projects as they come into your shop? I’m thinking of having some kind of work ticket system with requirement details, client info, due dates, design info on a clipboard hanging on the wall that I can keep updated and invoice from. If you have a system maybe that would be a good topic for a video.
