A tip for beginners: very lightly sanding the piece first will help keep the chisel from sliding all over the place. Adds some help to keeping along the guide tape.
I ordered these immediately! You don't know how long I've been looking for this exact kind of thing! Trying to do panel lines with a pointy scribe and a razor saw is clumsy at best. This is awesome!
Great video as always, Rex! Wanted to let people know that, if you're looking for cheaper Magic Erasers, look for "Melamine" sponges instead. It's the generic name of the material, and it can be bought in bulk instead of smaller, more expensive packs.
This is awesome! I have a Patlabor model from the late 80's that need to have deeper lines. I've been riding the fence on what to get to do the lines as the Tamiya Scriber 2 is so cumbersome to use on the curved surfaces (the handle...grr). Thanks for another great tool video and I am looking forward to build videos
Nice! I've been thinking about getting a few scribers and these look like a good option. In your own panel liner paint line, I would also recommend that you do some of the standard colors. For some you're going to be the gateway to get into panel lining and it's easy when you're picking up some colors, to also get a standard color when you order. Or even if you've been panel lining for a while and you pick some of your special colors, you might be low on a standard color and throw that onto your order.
I own 4 of these .1,.2,.5,3. I’ve used them on a couple kits now and they are pretty nice and The handle is great! Although these are nice, the dispae chisels are definitely more beginner friendly and produce a very clean cut if your not comfortable already with chisels or scribes.
In what ways are dspiae chisels more beginner friendly? I’m kinda stuck on which ones to buy. There’s also madworks chisels (the cheaper ones not dlc) that go for about 10 each on new type. How’s the durability on the kaizo ones so far
@@justindoan9055 well they are designed to be the “pull type” of scriber which is much easier to use vs BMC/SAB chisel type. I also have a couple madworks chisels and they are very easy to use as well. If I’m honest, I don’t think I’ll buy any more kaizos at this point. They just don’t seem as consistently sharp as I thought they would be. Also dspaie sells a great starter set that comes with a handle for like 54 bucks if you can find it in stock somewhere!
@@Gundumb_guy ahh thats a bummer since they were pretty affordable. If i were to get 2 or 3 widths what do you think I should go for. I want one for general lines and those small notches that people like to do. I mainly do mg kits maybe rg here and there. I also dont think dspiae has any .2mm instock anywhere. So if you reccomend that, what could replace .2
@@justindoan9055 if you think you would be comfortable using the straight type of chisels, then by all means get a couple of those kaizos! They are not bad, by any means, and you can definitely use them without buying the handle if you don’t want to invest in it at first. The only reason I won’t buy more is because I’m going to just save and buy one or two SABs at a time I think. Although for the price, the madworks chisels are pretty good. Look at Justin at G-studio, I think he mainly uses madworks and his level of work is insane! As for sizes I would get something along the lines of .1,.2,.4, and if your wanting to do notches then maybe .6? It’s hard to say really but I have a 3mm that I’ve used once and a 1mm that I use from time to time for doing bigger notches and negative space carving. The real key is to buy the tape! It’s definitely worth buying a couple different sizes to find what works best for you and they actually last a REALLY long time so it’s worth the investment imo.
@@Gundumb_guy im ngl i might just invest in SAB. I was going to buy a bigger cutting mat and the holder, but that makes it just as expensive if i was just going to get 2 SAB scribers. I can definetly deal with a smaller cutting mat for now. Prob gonna go with .2 or .3 then .6 for notches
Thanks for the “inkwell pen as a platelet line applicator” tip. Also, thanks for that “line width” comparison plastic sheet. Evergreen makes many plastic sheet and plastic shape packages.😳👍😳
Very interesting. I am trying to learn to make ANY first cut lightly before cutting/scoring/engraving. It took me a long time to understand that plastic has a "grain". It's not as obvious as wood, but it exists and shows up when doing fine scribing or cutting, If one breaks that grain, then the follow up cuts will be straight and true.
Thanks for the great review - I ordered a set tonight, as I'm in the middle of a 3D printed project that will need a lot of panel lines re-scribed after I finish all the filling and sanding. If that day ever happens LOL.
Always have trouble with panel lines using a pointed tool so the chisel looks the way to go. Love the dymo tape tip. Thanks for another great vid Robert
I'll get a 0.15 at the end of the month, i dont want to make my own panel line cause i dont have the patience for it and i just want to accent some lines so the liner dont just rub off!
Hey man, you should do a video on how to sharpen hobby chisels. I've been trying to find a guide to sharpen my Madworks one (I SLIGHTLY chipped it when it slipped.) but guides for sharpening hobby chisels don't really exist. It's kind of nuts. I want to buy a honing jig but I can't find one that's the proper size for it. Would be cool if you showed people how to sharpen other common hobby tools as well. Thanks!
They aren’t long enough. The sab ones are a little thinner and about a half a inch longer. That little bit helps for you to hold it in your hand. I have two of these kiazo ones. And they just aren’t long enough for me to use comfortably. I pretty much only use sab now.
For the magic erasers, you can buy the same melomine sponges for way cheaper. They will break easier but you will get 100 for 5 dollars so it wont matter.
Oh sorry, I forgot to say. But I will be using them on some large high grades (i.e. Messer, Nightingale, Kshatriya, and the Xi Gundam,) but mostly on MGs. I've heard that the .15mm is perfect for most panel lines, but I want to get a couple of extra to cover my bases for some of those wonky sizes.
Been doing scribing on some gundams the last few days. I might have to pick up some of these to try. Great video. Probley got to jump on the patrion to support you. The Mad-works should be realy good, i would like to see you try them out. The guy that has the StudioG UA-cam channel and the StudioG Store uses them a lot on his insane master builder gundam builds
Those are chunky hunks of Tungsten in those! Great price for all of them Id say youre just about paying for just the raw Tungsten just about! You could scribe steel plate with those suckers! They ought to last a lifetime.
They kind of look hard to hold. I'm sure they're fine, but I've sunk enough money into chisels. The handful I have from Dspiae and Madworks are doing great for me so far.
Hey rex another great vid as always! but I was wondering how do you clean pipettes or eye droppers or whatever they're called so that way there isnt any bits of paint left inside? or do you prepare them in a way so that isnt the case? or do you just throw them away?? anyways thanks for the vids!!
Just a heads up, you don't need to get Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. The type of foam they use is melamine. It's extremely cheap to buy either pre cut or in massive sheets.
BMC 0.1mm, 0.15mm & 0.2mm is unrivaled on WAVE, DSPIAE & SAB I've tested DSPIAE & SAB DSPIAE is the most solid but at the same time the most unstable(blade stuck often), you can use it as a marker for BIG parts & making marks to area you wanna cut due to its blade strength, don't use it on precise details SAB glides better on most plastic than DSPIAE and it imitates BMC handle, its also pretty rigid & you can use it as BMC alternative is awful thing happen on your 0.1mm BMC BMC is not as rigid as those 2 above, but due to this, they glide on parts easily & for some reason, scraped plastic doesn't collect as much as DSPIAE & BMC, making work much smoother than DSPIAE & BMC My conclusion : BMC 0.1 - 0.2mm is mandatory if you work alot on 12cm-25cm kit, there is alternative, but BMC is the best i know so far You can substitute 0.3mm above with other chisel, but i believe BMC will always be the smoothest & the cleanest out of all it competitor, for now
