Story told to my be a friend while serving in VN: An Army L-19, making recon passes along a river landed on a sand bar. In a manner similar to this video, a tire broke seal and deflated. The pilot had tools, but no way to inflate the tire. He constructed an A-frame to lift the wing by kicking in the side supports, little by little. He then removed the tire casing and filled it with wet sand. it held together well enough for the sand bar takeoff and landing back at the field. Ingenious!
Your Afrikaans from 22:26 and on made me smile. Not used to hearing it on big UA-cam channels :) Loved the video, someday I'll explore Namibia by light aircraft.
JP you are not alone dear! (your little tyre issue showed that) I feel your elation and joy, Namibia, it's peoples friendliness, generosity, love of their homeland and the scenery are overwhelmingly goosebumpy :) I'm a 6th gen aussie, youngest ppl holder, got it 1976, travelled for 25+ years around the globe every month, and of all the amazing, out of the way locations I had the pleasure of getting to know Namibia is hands down my favourite - I feel that I was born in the wrong country! On my first arrival into Windhoek I, unexpectedly, whispered to my self "I can / will live here". I had the same uncontrollable smile on my face you had just before minute 15. It was love at first sight....and it got more intense as I engaged more and more with the people and the cultures/s. I now live on Vancouver Island, but will shortly be returning to Namibia for a 'fix'. I, and I'm sure many others look forward to following you over the next days (with clean hands :)....and of course on your next big trip around the block. Peter
It's lovely hearing you speak Afrikaans, as a Dutch person -- it's very weird but so cool to suddenly understand you in my native language. Bedankt voor je mooie videos, your cinematography and storytelling made me start to illustrate planes again. Thank you!
That is some adventure ...u should offer tours. Your passion for the country is amazing. I bought your otavi..glasses. I love them in the miata in Vermont.
Having just done my 9th trip to Nam on my Honda Africa Twin (and twice to the FR Canyon Lodge, we were the first new and old AT’s there) one thing is so clear, one cannot describe Namibia to those who have not been there … yet. Drove down to the end of the strip too on our first trip to the Lodge. Following your trip and build diligently … and I used to fly a C177 in another life. Cheers J-P.
Hey JP, glad you are back! Aahh, Namibia again, the fastest transit via Uppington so far I recon! Dont listen to Instagrammers. I was there (by car from SA and via Uppington), Fish River Canyon. I was blown away from that cross-country (ground vehicle based) and Canyon. Maybe I have even seen those lodges from the other side. At least there have been some honeymoon-or-so lodges far far on the other side of the ridges. 2018 it was ... Miss it! Need to be repeated this visit. Good luck with your project cont. I will continue to follow. Herzlich Grüße aus DE
You can get small battery-powered tire pumps. You can get multi-purpose ones that serve as a battery-backup, a jump-starter, a tire pump, and a work light. You can charge your USB devices from them too. Might be worth picking one up.
Namibia is magical. Loved my time in Swakop as I prepared to take my 182 back home to Nairobi. Beautiful coastline flying. Visited Windhoek, Rundu and exited through the caprivi strip to Livingstone.
i am still following you from the flight with louis im glad your still doing what you love. You did a lot of work on that world flight and I want you to know we all saw what you did and appreciate you
more, more, more! what an exciting adventure.. and sorry for the flat tire! looks like the additional help made a difference.. continue showing us rest of your adventure on this trip all the way!
Great video of a beautiful country which you obviously love. Bad luck with the tyre though. I really look forward to all your upcoming videos. Keep safe.
Never thought about using a rivet. POP or AN? I carry a plug kit that works similar to a POP rivet. Also string plugs with rubber cement. I agree with the other reply about inserting the spare tube. But we don’t always think of all our options out in the field.
Following your channel like a stalker JP. I love your vids and am rooting for you the whole way. I have never seen anyone else land as gently and perfectly as you do. And I used to be ATC at Jan Smuts airport. (Relax it was in the '80's and no danger to aviators lol). Best of luck. Hubby is one of your patreons and a 'wannabe' pilot (flying in SA costs an arm and a leg and parts of your torso).
Bro 😎, I’m chuffed you going back to Namib. Can’t wait to follow this trip series. I loved my time in Namibia. It’s a very special place, almost like what life could be like on another planet. Windhoek and Swakop are my fav memories!!
I did a Namibia trip from Cape Town in a Piper Seneca from Cape Town, Upington, Keetmanshoop, Rostock, and Swakop, just before the plandemic. Visited your old hangar in Swakop where you did some tiling in one of your previous videos. Always great to go to Namibia! Keetmanshoop terminal is like a walk back in time to the 1970”s. Did the Fish River canyon hike in my younger years back in 1994 from Ais Ais, yes, Namibia is a very unique place.
I love you mate but the look on your face when you realised the tyre was tubeless has literally had me chuckling for hours now. I’m sorry man, I felt your pain.
Looking pretty promising JP. Thanks for the sharing you thoughts on Namibia. Growing up in Alaska, I get it... Perhaps Sling Flying safaris could be the next Instagram thing? Have you considered any aerodynamic clean-up like flap hing and tail wheel fairings or gap seals? Also, I'm here in Salem Or where Garmin Headquarters Pacific Coast Avionics and others resources if you need anything. I might also be able to field some sponsor requests if need be. Thanks for helping to keep the magic burning in the hearts of so many. Cheers Mate! Thanks for helping to keep the magic burning in the hearts of so many.
Nice video as always :) However - you should include a picture of your location on a local map now and then , so we can follow you on your route and destinations. ;)
Fyi, ytube is loading your page with a very large excess amount of advertisements, not just normal, but after a "Pause" on a video it then goes straight into an extended advertisement. I hope if the watcher has to go through 3 series of the same commercial in 7-10 minutes, you are the one benefiting. Own the Content!
There is nothing to stop you doing that, that's why I reckon they carry tubes, much less space than a spare wheel. I think it just didn't occur to him!
With all that coffee I would have to piss like a race horse . Coffee goes straight through must have a piss bottle or good kidneys and bladder for long flight 😄
Love your plane, but I’m no fan of tail draggers aside from the old warbirds. I really thought you were going to have a prop strike in that landing. In the first episode about this adventure didn’t you say it’s also available with a nose wheel instead?
I guess it’s what you are used to that you like. I’m used to lots of trees and green things, that place looks to me like a barren wasteland. The airplane is nice though.

it's a good practice before a round-the-world flight. And your subscribers will follow the flight and help in any way they can

love that shot down runway at 17.00 minutes in when you drop down into the canyon and then few seconds later zoom back into view - awesome
Thanks

The writing on that driver's shirt is pretty on point: "on the edge of eternity". Man what a view.
Excellent video. You showed reliance in a bad situation. I loved your helpers, they are not camera shy. :)
20:15 that shot, dipping down just to shoot up again, it's the most comicbook takeoff anybody has done ever
Can we just appreciate lightspeed. there should be more lightspeed pilots on YT. I ran LS zulu's for my first 300 hours and they are too good.

Adapt and overcome, sounds like the way. Love to see the second biggest canyon, as I live in Arizona home to the biggest.
Cheers mate and crack on!

Thanks for a great clip. My mom was born in Keetmanshoop. In 1918 there definitely wasn't an airstrip!

I love that point in the flight when you can set the engine and the autopilot and sit back and open the coffee and enjoy the view.
I had the same issue on one of my first cross-country solo flights. It ruined my confidence for a while though it wasn’t a serious incident.
Great video of a beautiful country which you obviously love. Bad luck with the tyre though. I really look forward to all your upcoming videos. Keep safe.
Impressive work overcoming the issue.

Nice to see a notification that you have a new video out. Keep them coming.

Mr jp you are very inspiring to watch God bless you for sharing your adventures
Great video JP😅👍👌
Great video JP. 🙏🏻✈️. Best of luck with your adventure
It's amazing how much casual Afrikaans still feels like Dutch. Sounds a bit Flemmish to my Dutch ear but perfectly understandable
So good to see another video, can’t wait to see more!!!!
You can use a tube in a tubeless tire. Was there something unique about the tire that prevented this fix?
I bet it just didn't occur to him!
I love you mate but the look on your face when you realised the tyre was tubeless has literally had me chuckling for hours now. I’m sorry man, I felt your pain.
Did they ever have to use the diversion airstrip for the shuttle?
Always a pleasure to see you and your video...Take care ;)
That's the old good Candourist I love!
Its how I feel returning to Zim🍻
Hey JP unbelievable and beautiful thanks for sharing.
Loved this video!!!
I’m actually planning to go to Namibia later this year (not for Instagram haha). Do you have any recommendations on what to do?

plugged it with a rivet? That's awesome, what kind of rivet?
Nice video as always :)
However - you should include a picture of your location on a local map now and then , so we can follow you on your route and destinations. ;)
Vlog extraordinaire!
Just leave out the section on how you fixed the tire nice !
Tubes can be used in a tubeless tire, no problem. Adventure motorcyclists have been doing that for a long time.
Mate it always happens on the worst place for it. In the end of the day you fixed it. No worrys!
I've been waiting for your next Ep, thanks Mate. I wish I was there with you JP! It's a bit far from Australia..... ;-)
Finding out it's tubeless is not that bad, plugging a tubed tire is worse! Great video, thanks.
It's the history of anyplace 🏠 and alot are just narcissistic. 🌏🌎🌍 So much to learn about the world in our short time we have. 🛩️🤗🦊
heart dropped at 20:40
Good vid. Question: how do you mount the iPad on the right? I’m looking for options.
Looking forward to meeting you at Oshkosh. :)
I’d like to hear what you carry for tools? No doubt in Namibia you likely have to carry a lot?

Enjoyed the dry sense of humour.
18:00 no tiedown? Beautiful country.
Be happy!
Is there anykind of flexwing flying going on out there ?
Great video! Really interesting, and good of you to add all that drama at the end, you really didn't have to! :O haha
JP... If I could give this a million likes, I would.
It's a good experience can't we carry a spare tire?
What is your advice for a person who is planning a solo around the world 🌎
10:00 🤣
"I'm 8 minutes late." LMAO it supposed to be +- 30 seconds, JP. LMAO
what awful and inopportune bad luck, fortunately you could get help. Take care, enjoy and greetings.
Lekker! JP
Enjoy your time with Family.
Your bird is kak sexy at night with the wingtip lights!
Viel Spass!
What engine do you have in this machine?
that sunset tho
If that happens again, find an elephant - train it to sit on command then have it sit on the wing opposite of the flat tire.
Lekker afrikaans daar JP. Welgedaan. 😁
I know it ADDS weight...but fill the tires with FOAM
Here's an idea, could you have put the tube in the tubeless tire as a temporary move?
There is nothing to stop you doing that, that's why I reckon they carry tubes, much less space than a spare wheel. I think it just didn't occur to him!
mooi om die Afrikaans te hoor!!
Hopelik het jy by Johan DW n draai gemaak… ek en Hy het net nou die dag oor jou geskinner 😉
"Bugger off again". LOL
Sterkte JP !
So unlucky about the tyre, especially after that epic shot of you taking off and going into the canyon. That Goorin Bro's hat is fire btw dude!
YIKES !
good afrikaans you got going there (:
so good :)
Your Afrikaans is rather decent bud. Rather surprised hearing you speak it so well. Kudus to you boet!
With all that coffee I would have to piss like a race horse . Coffee goes straight through must have a piss bottle or good kidneys and bladder for long flight 😄
I said you must have good kidneys and a bladder to hold it for hours in a flight . Either that or you whiz on the floor . Right 🤣
Love your plane, but I’m no fan of tail draggers aside from the old warbirds.
I'm still confused.
What kind of country is south Africa .
Like north Korea.
Sounds like Korea but too much different to south Korea.
Lekker Afrikaans daar JP LOL
JP! Flying in 20 knots crosswind! No spare tyre flying in isolated area! A couple of lessons there! Wind it back a bit mate!
@@the_candourist hört sich nach einem Keyboard-Warrior an haha. Alles richtig gemacht, JP. Hoffentlich kann ich Namibia mal besuchen :)
Lucky to find such good help in middle of nowhere.
Hey JP, sent you an email to inquiry on your gmail. Don’t know if you got it
Ofirgh
Your great great grandfathers were illegal settlers and exploitation of Namibia resources, which makes you live this free and easy life.
As a Namibian, where does your American accent come from? You faking it?
JP! Your Afrikaans is amazing!
Jis ek mis the Afrikaans
You need a life partner!
