Sorry for your loss of your sister and the circumstances. My mother passed away in 2005. Her middle name was Helen also. I learned much later from my brother that my mom was taken off of life support and starved to death for 2 weeks before her death. At the time none of my siblings bothered to call me (I was only 60 miles away). My sister calls me after my mom died and lied to me telling me she was taken off of life support 3 days prior - not 2 weeks. My siblings didn't care if I was present with my mom and them while my mom was dying. They wasn't thinking of my mom either, were they? My poor 86 yr old mom must of been in so much pain. Why'd they let her suffer for so long?

I have morally supported relatives and friends through this difficult situation of terminal illness. In my country, we now have legislation in regard to people being able to choose end-of-life, under very special circumstances. I'm personally not in favour of it. I think looking at better palliative care is the answer. It's not our place to take lives but we have a responsibility to prevent suffering in the medical and health sectors. There is a big difference. Just saying. I agree, Patty Duke was always an amazing actor, immersing herself into her roles. A heart-felt movie about a sad and sensitive issue. Thanks for sharing it. 🙂❤👍

Wonderful film about a very sensitive subject. I do have some minor technical quibbles: one is that Ida's younger sister Shany was smoking in the hospital - I could be wrong but I thought all smoking was banned in U.S. hospitals by 1983 when this took place. The other was an early scene where Betty was shutting the door to her and husband Ed's apartment which had 3 locks on it but she didn't use any of the locks - and this is supposed to be in Manhattan no less - I don't live there but I live in another large city and it's second nature for me to lock the doors immediately - too much crime out there not to do so.

    • @weareeverywhere7225

The smoking might have been a choice to illustrate how people viewing the results of an activity that causes cancer can continue with the activity without so much as a second thought.

There should be such a thing as death with dignity. I think there may be in some states, not sure, but i thought i read that somewhere.. like the woman said, "if she was a dog, theyd put her down" ... thats true. Why cant a human being in their right mind decide they would rather go peacefully, comfortably and pain free if thats what they choose... that nurse told her, the pain meds may not feel like theyre working, but they are... not if ur hurting so bad that u wish u were dead... we can choose how we live, we should be able to choose how and when we die as well...

No one tells you that even Hospice is no good to a person who wants to die at home. They can't do much unless you go into their facility. We all need to call our legislators and ask for end of life choices. They wouldn't make their dog suffer, but humans are money generating units, so torture them till death.

Euthanasia is a sensitive topic and it should be up to the individual suffering, no one else. You wouldn't let a dog/pet suffer more than they should. It's the humane thing to do to let someone chose how/when they pass on. Some people have religious beliefs (I don't), but if you want to suffer to the end, so be it. But for others, it's their choice.

People saying it’s wrong to end other people’s lives, but they are ok to end animals lives and switch off life support machines are hypocrites in my eyes. And to those who say it’s the lord who should decide, no disrespect, but that’s a load of bull.

Heard that before I don't want an aide. Not easy watching your parents age. They don't want anything to change. Resistant to medication. They turn almost back in time
Time to a child again. They view us the caretakers as taking their rights away.
You want to make them comfortable but it doesn't go that way. It's very draining but
It's worth them being with their family before they go. Not in a hospital or a nursing home. 😏😏

I had to watch my dear husband die of cancer. Watched him through Chemo, and then when we had to quit chemo because it was doing him more harm than good. We knew he was terminal - just doing the chemo trying to extend his life by even a few months. We had 14 yr old twin sons at home, and he didn't even want them to know he was dying - wanted them to have that last summer to be boys instead of men! Anyway, his last few weeks were spent under Hospice Care at home. I bless Hospice. They were so warm, so personal, so caring. They came immediately when I called and said he was dying. He died just before Christmas. Hospice was one of the Memorial recipients we designated. Watching this is ripping me apart... The memories...

PROVE your God. If you believe in god then god gave us brains to figure out ways to not let people suffer with no hope of survival and god gave us hearts to have the compassion to help them. Because the world exists does not in any way prove that a 'god' created it. Or a bible written by men, flawed humans, was written by a 'god', easy for you to sit and pontificate until YOU are the one suffering unspeakable horrors. Until you have, you are not even qualified to have an opinion.

There are so many medications and other pain relieving methods available that make medically assisted suicide unnecessary. Also, we humans have the are capable of withstanding a lot of pain and suffering. They also gain strength from the comfort others can give them. Animals do not have the coping mechanisms we have and that is why, when it is the right time and circumstance that we end their suffering by means of euthanasia. Humans do not need it.
