The role-playing supplement I've been waiting for my entire time in the hobby.

"Edition" clarification: This actual product is in its 5th Edition. Call of Cthulhu is in its 7th Edition. So, when I say "Masks 7th Edition," what I really mean is "Masks updated to 7th edition Call of Cthulhu rules."
Note: Second-long skip at 33:11 is due to phone starting a new video file in the middle of recording.

Great video, thank you for uploading it! My D&D campaign will finally draw to a close in about six months, so I've been thinking of running a Call of Cthulhu campaign for my group afterward. This overview is superb -- just what anyone needs to make an informed decision. I especially appreciate you showing off every single handout, and doing an informative flip-through. Thorough review, very well done.

I really appreciate this comment Josh because a common part of UA-cam culture right now is to act like it is insane to have a video longer than ten minutes. Yet, we have Actual Plays that last 3+ hours and nobody complains about that. Creators should show what they want to show, knowing their audience. And, as a life long gamer, I know that many people like to see the full breadth of a big product. I am not ashamed of the run time. People can choose to watch or not. ;)

You can feel the excitement and true admiration for ttrpg in this guys voice. Very genuine and well done video. Loved watching.

Thank you kindly for noticing. Being genuine is very important to me and is a big part of the reason why I don't script videos. I challenge the conventional wisdom that polished and shiny (and manufactured and fake) is the only way to do You Tube. I deliberately want people to see something that looks like it was produced in their own rec room. Because that's where mine are produced. ;)

Huge nostalgia hit! I ran the first edition about a hundred years ago. We had three false starts as a result of gun-ho investigators but finally the fourth attempt saw the team survive. For a while. In the first edition there was a cut-out and build box of matches; fantastic clue. The players were impressed. It was indeed ground-breaking and it looks like this one is too. By the way, I'm pretty sure those additional chapters were written for the first edition but had to be dropped as the production budget was going through the roof. Great unboxing video.

I just got this yesterday and I was amazed at the amount of campaign that this is. Lots of handouts, story, and adventure. I’m still reading it and looks like it would take half a year to get though. More than worth the price! I’m stoked. 😊

You may want to double that half a year, especially including false starts, players being unable to aftend at the odd week.

Finally pulled the trigger and ordered it; it is set to arrive tomorrow (17 May 2020) by 9pm. I should have ordered it directly from Chaosium’s website so I could have gotten the PDF for free but I decided to get it from Amazon so I would not have to wait for it to arrive - I ordered CoC Down Darker Trails last week from Chaosium directly and it still won’t arrive for another seven days. I just couldn’t wait that long for Masks.
And the company that you are thinking of that makes the deluxe props for Masks is the HP Lovecraft Historical Society. If you’re not a member of the HPLHS you need to be; they’re pretty great! I just upgraded from Member ($20/year) to Lifetime Member ($100 to join as Lifetime Member or $60 after six months of membership to Upgrade) and it’s absolutely worth it. The membership card and membership letter is more than worth it.

I am indeed a lifetime member as of Feb last year!

I don't worry about providing a story when I run games and I also don't run stuff directly out of the book. I like this module because it gives the referee a great toolbox to give the players the chance to make meaningful decisions. I let the players actions and decisions drive the story and I use the framework of the module to help inform how the world reacts to the players choices and decisions.

I am waiting for my copy in the mail. Looks really good. I got the pdf version too so I printed multible copies of every handout, so I can keep the ones in the physical copy in perfect condition. I bought the H.P. Lovecraft historical society MON Handout pack. And those handouts are absurdly beautiful.
Yes I spend way too much money on this *bows head in shame*

Never, ever be ashamed of what you love! And thanks for bringing up that the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society is who produced the Handouts pack. I seemed to remember them wanting to produce an even more expensive version of it. I could be mis-remembering.

@@RPGImaginings You are right. I got their basic handout box, and I love it. But they also produced one that includes amongst other things a "jade" statuette of the Bloated Woman.

How many hours play do you estimate the average group might get out of this? I ask because I'm tempted to buy although it's quite expensive. Sure, there's a lot for your money there. Very nicely done.

    • @RPGImaginings

There are groups who spend three years playing this campaign. If players went the absolute shortest route it would still take months of regular play, I think.

Thanks for this video! I've recently found CoC (after DMin D&D for the last 5 yrs) and love running epic stories and it looks like this fits the bill! Love Egyptian based stories!

Just fine. One of the things I like best about the "buy PDF early" model is that it helps budget the purchase over time. I save up for the PDF, and then have plenty of time to save the other half for the physical release.
