The "a lot ancient entities who look like small children" thing is actually quite overblown, primarely because of the Scarlet sisters who just happen to be both ones of the most popular characters in the series, as well as the ones responsible for popularizing the "vampire little girl who is actually 500 years old" trope. Most of the Touhou characters are in fact adults.
