I understand you were exposed to Bhaubali first. But Bhaubali's inspiration for many shots was from this movie's historical novel.
Bhauballi is more of a full fantasy- fiction over the top, with one hero taking down 100 guys, jumping to 50 feet, the strength of an elephant, and all the dream sequences... This movie is down to earth as it is history. Mani Ratnam said everything would be down to earth and no fantasy or super-powered heroes and he does not like to put grand superhero elements just for the sake of it.
To put it in simple terms it is like Game of Thrones, " Get the throne" from all the factions. Here is a version of my other comment!
You may or may not know this info here is some more. Many South Indian directors and big actors have been trying to make this Novel into a film, for more than 50 years. But they have not been able to because of many reasons, one being budget. The novel is just too big. The whole movie is spoken in the classical Tamil language. which is understood by many. But the actual version of the Tamil language during this period in history(~300 BC-1300 CE) was a bit different and was transitioning to the ones now.
PS - 1, It is historical fiction based on the novel. It's like 70%history and 30%fiction according to the director. It is very big. It is based on one of the best novels in Indian Tamil history which was written in the 50s. The author Kalki went to great lengths in researching the history of the Cholas and their land to write a novel based on that.
The historical part is about the Chola empire(Usually Not mentioned in any of the western societies and one of the top 5 longest ruled empires in the world, according to what we can find for now it's 1300~1500 years) who ruled over southern India, Srilanka and most of the Southeast Asian countries as they controlled all sea trade routes and were very good in naval warfare/ literally with flamethrowers like weapons on ships/ had the largest trained war Elephant army for both lands and naval war. They transported thousands of elephants for wars through the seas!
Their ruling takes place through generations for more than 1000 years(The recorded time period is this, from 200-300BC to ~13th century. That's ~1500 years of lineage. Unrecorded, may be an extent to 1500-2000 years till the 13th century). Their maritime force was were very very powerful.
Some of the temples they built are over 1000 years(One was celebrated recently as it reached 1000 years. It was soo cool, I was there) and many temples are still in active use by millions of people.
Actually, there were more like 2 more kingdoms(Cheras & Pandiyas) fighting out and Cholas won and outlasted them all in southern India. This is a short version of history.

I am no fan of Aishwarya neither I do expect much from heroines and female actors in Indian films because they get pigeon holded into small time and inconsequential roles that barely matter most of time but this Movie potrayed Women as so smart and powerful that I instantly became a fan. Almost all of the women are well acted and their role have clear weight behind them. I can't believe its the same Aishwarya rai whom I never thought could act. She looks so enigmatic and her role is so hard to understand. I loved that because she keeps you guessing. This is actually Political Drama, not war movie. All the wars are somewhat inconsequential here. This was a bit too smart for Indian audience who are too used to spoonfeeding of bollywood. I believe they have done as well as they could have. This film has to be watched with constant attention because its too subtle. From the Spy character of Karthi and the 2 princes and 2 princesses....everyone is so brilliant. Huge fan, I admire their work.

@@galimir You haven't watched her previous films at all then, Rani Mukharji and Preity Zinta outclassed her massively because of her one tone acting, she has good looks but she couldn't act in many of her films. Alot of heroines are just meant to be eye candies rather than actresses. Its only here she truly capitalizes on her charm and beauty and even performs true acting compared to what she did before. Alot of Indian heroines are in the end just Eye candy, they are in the film for the sake of it, its not even neccesary for plot in many cases but just thrown in just complete the age old formula of Hero, Heroine and Villain
@@ravishbhasin7041 well,thats just your opinion 😎 Ash is the biggest of them all,still.And thats a fact.Ash is something else,since the very beginning,in everything she does(incl.acting,since her very first movie Iruvar,where she plays a double role).If you think she is just an eye candy,you dont know anything about her... Concerning her acting skills-well,she has better and worse movies,like every actor.Judging of ones acting skills is a very subjective thing.You simply dont become a star like Ash,just for your beauty.Examples are multiple.It also depends on the movies and the directors.
