Watch it. It's a classic with complex flawed characters. And the director Mani Ratnam doesn't believe in spoon-feeding. So a moment of inattention might mean, you'll lose a particular character's past or loyalty towards a faction. It's primarily about the 3 Royal Chola Siblings and their loyal friend whom they pass between them like a lucky coin. Aish plays the primary antagonist and ex-gf of the Crown Prince. Forget the non-linear story telling, the multiple factions and the galore of characters. It's beautifully made and meant to savored slowly. It's only in the second movie that you'll completely get each character's motivation and past and the reason for their choices.

Well this movie doesn't have the fantasy elements like dragons and knights and ice king like in GOT, as this is based on real events with a bit of fiction. but the plot and politics will be on point.
There are too many characters so you might find it hard to follow through but maybe do some research like Ponniyin Selvan Family tree.
Basically this story takes place before Arunmozhi Varman (Arun - moli Var-man) ascends the throne and becomes the greatest king in Tamil History. He is also known as Raja Raja Cholan (Kings of Kings). He spread his reign even outside of India to Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia and built the biggest Navy to ever exist in that time.
There were many kingdoms in the 10th Century in southern India. Cholas, Pandyas, Cheras, and etc. This story revolves around the Pandya's planning to take over the Chola's reign over the land and also to seek revenge. So it's all about plotting, treachery and all the politics and how the Cholas will escape the bad phase as they step into their golden era.
The women portrayed in this film will be empowering as they have such an important role.
The reviews are good so far and the music will be mindblowing so it will indeed be worth the watch:)

There are songs about 5 of them but not as Jaley as an American thinks. It is not a musical in that sense. Go watch the movie but know the plot and characters a bit or you will be confused.

This movie is directed by the legendary director Maniratnam. It was his dream project, but according to me this is not his best work frankly speaking and I don’t speak Tamil only Tamil people can relate to this movie. It was adapted from a novel called ponniyan Selvan written in 5 volumes. The songs and music of this movie are great in both the parts which was composed by the legendary A.R Rehman himself and you can react to those songs if you want but particularly react to this one song called chola chola( the lyrical video not the video song it was incomplete)my personal favourite you will get goosebumps listening to the music

I agree with everything except that it's non-relatable to Non-Tamils. I didn't find it so. And I haven't watched Tamil movies before and am unfamiliar with the cast. So long as you pay attention and keep track of who's who, you should be fine. But yes, Chola Chola lyrical song is beautiful. The Hindi as well as the Tamil version.

I am a big fan of ARrahman and both ponniyinselvan 1/2 music albums is one of his bests but it didn't get that much attention appreciation that some noisy songs are getting .
ponniyinselvan part 1 has 6 songs
