And delving further into wasted potentials, I wish they had gone with the idea of having the Winx use black magic in season four. The Fairy Hunters are immune to fairy magic, which leaves the possibility that witch magic is their weakness, but the Winx get new FAIRY powers and suddenly they're not immune anymore?
It would have been an ideal time for them to confront their prejudice towards witches. Now they are in their shoes, using their kind of magic, and on EARTH. Humans discriminating the Winx because they are witches, despite them doing good things, would surely make them think.

what if their new fairy powers...was literally becoming witches for a short amount of time. Could have had a really cool scene of bloom actually remembering she's from earth and talking about how on earth a lot of girls actually like witches, dress up as them for Halloween, how they still have pagan practices and all that.
Maybe their Believix could have been pulling even more from earth's belief in magic! and lets be real, designing witch outfits for them could have been amazing, especially having the hats in different fashions

This honestly gave me an idea for a rewrite of Season 4 where we find out the the Black Circle was originally a much larger organization of Wizards, Humans, and other Magical Creatures who were attempting to rebell against the ruling Fairies. Fairies who agreed with the Black Circle would have willingly become Witches leading Earth to see Witches as the "good guys" as they chose to give up their power and status to help humanity and the other magical creatures of Earth (which would explain why for most of human history Witchcraft wasn't really seen as anything negative until a couple hundred years ago) and it wasn't until a vocal minority of the Black Circle that only wanted power took charge and began the Witchhunts by convincing people that because Witches and Faries are the same the Witches are really just biding their time until they can reestablish the original ruling class of the Fairies (maybe primarily as Witches this time). This would be why Bloom would have a general initial distrust of Witches upon first arriving to Magix that is then reinforced by her friends and the Trix.

Thinking about it, I think as a child I already had a headcanon for why witches' don't have transformations so let me just dig it up and really work this through.
Witches don't transform because they are already taht powerful in their regular form, so normally no need for extra forms as fairies do, or what extra transformations the Trix get in the show.
It's just harder and more dangerous to become a witch because of it being rooted in negative emotions and energy while literally in your regular BASE form. But once you trained yourself up to a power level and can mentally handle it, you have all your power at your finger tips 24/7
All while fairies may also have basic magic in their regular forms but to fight and reach their full potential they absolutely NEED to transform. Fairy magic is saver and "easier" to learn and therefore it results in more transformations ect. Though the crucial weakness will always remain taht a fairy needs to transform to really tab into her powers.
Fairies need to transform which manifest in wings so they can fly. Witches just...can fly already at a certain skill level. Though to balance that out, the fairy wings come with special properties like fairy dust.
Both ways of channeling ones magic - fairy and witch - compliment each other like yin-yang as it was already said in the video. There are advantages and disadvantages for both forms, you just need to figure out with method suits you personally better.
Hmmm... there's something really solid here. Let me loose sleep over this for a week

    • @michaelmaki6857
      @michaelmaki6857 8 місяців тому +61

That makes sense. Negative emotions are easier to build but harder to direct and use. So fairy forms are about building up and sustaining Positive emotions, while positive magic is easier and takes less effort. Negative Magic is easy to build up or sustain but equally easy to loose control over if you can’t maintain your emotional stability. In Contrast, Fairies have to have a complete meltdown to loose control over their fairy magic. The forms are stable enough to be flooded with Negative Magic and keep working Ala Dark Bloom.
Explains why the type A Ambitious Girls end up in Cloud Tower chasing the real challenge, why Fairy School is more like community college or a sorority and why we don’t see Fairy Forms for Peak Fairies like Faragonda or Daphne.
Also why the Fairy forms keep getting weirder and weirder. The Winx clearly are not ready for actually mastering their emotions and directly controlling their magic without the form but Faragonda has to keep finding new forms for them to learn.

    • @declanmckenna6854
      @declanmckenna6854 8 місяців тому +62

This could also explain why Witches can easily fall into evil. Witchcraft requires the absolute understanding and mastery of your negative emotions. Having to rely solely on your negative emotions makes it easy to spiral into a really deep pit that can be hard to get yourself out of (kinda like how in Star Wars the Dark Side has a lot of powers and abilities that would be considered "good" like healing and life sharing but if you aren't balanced or trained it becomes corruptive). Also the idea of "absolute power corrupts absolutely" can come into this. Since Witches can reach their maximum potential much quicker they may reach that point before they are really mature enough to have that level of power (and with negative emotion being its source and the social stigma of being a Witch) you get a perfect storm of young, impressionable people lashing out against a system that they feel has wronged them or are finally in a position where they can do whatever they want with no inhibitions.

I really wish more of the magical creatures were as fleshed out as the (female) fairies! As for witch prejudice, I think it may simply be a cultural thing; I think Iginio once said that that the Trix were made beautiful to contrast the typical ugly depiction they have in Italian folklore. The prejudice against witches may also be rooted in traditional Italian beliefs.

I'd like to think that the Trix are secretly loathed by the rest of Cloud Tower later on because *they're too good* at being terrible and they subsequently drag the school reputation down by increments because they're zealous overachievers.
At first everyone thought it was cool that they hunted Musa down for essentially trying to stop Darcy from mentally coercing Riven - that was teenage girl shit. And then they hooked up with Lord Darkar. Huh, alright then. And then they hooked up with Valtor and tried to forcibly brainwash the school. Yeah, these witches are turbo-nerds and now the school is seen as an asylum for essentially overzealous, genocidal maniacs regardless of if you signed up for Squirrel Explosion 101 or Torture Small Children: The Elective. Everyone sees you as *THAT DEMON WITCH CHILD* now because of like, these 30 year old women you've never heard of who coasted on their innate former popularity and high standing in the witch community until it ultimately cost the rest of the school's image.
Think Hogwarts in relation to Harry Potter after they get caught up in Voldemort's blood racism bullshit. Someone had to have thought, *"I wasted galleons - my parents just sent me here to learn how to levitate a cat..."*
I'm just imagining a sophomore witch being dryly like, *"Yes. I have mind control powers. No, I will not turn you into a zombie or take over the school. Please stop asking. I just want a cup of coffee and a croissant. Leave me alone."*
It's a long rant, but in short: it went from teen girl bullshit to ECO-TERRORISM and the school got permanently saddled with that.

I always felt as a child there was a strong connection to the physical appearance and the villainizing of witches and the idolising of fairies. Fairies strike me as the pretty popular girls that are oblivious to the disadvantages and struggles of ugly girls and like to bully them or put them down to build their ego which isn’t helped by the red fountain guys very obviously having a preference and enabling the dynamic. Cause everytime I see a fairy with a witch she just has to insult their looks when theynknow they have an Advantage there which I find a very cowardly thing to do.
I think this was also highlighted by the miss magix episode where Lucy broke down and cried cause she wanted to feel beautiful and thus LOVED (and treated well) by others, something all witches or most witches seem to have had in common…
Just reflecting our world pretty well…
As a little girl watching winx knalgassen wished I would be beautiful like a fairy and desired and wanted but I was always the ugly girl that people feared and were disgusted with because of that. So that scene in particular of the miss magix episode was really close to my heart, and the active shunning of witches.
And I think we can all agree that as much as fashion and aesthetics are fun, the magical dimension can be extremely brutal and prejudiced and obsessed with it in very ugly ways, solaria setting a prime example of this.
Of all people I felt like Stella had to have the most empathy since she was bullied for being ugly before so I was sad I never saw Stella or anyone reach out to that problem. I always felt the same about how everyone in the magical dimension does the same with monsters and ugly gross looking things even when it isn’t harmful but a necessary thing to exist.
I think witches represent what they study and master, the darker more uglier gross and unattractive things that society tends to want to stay away from which is sad I wished people could embrace both sides more of the coin instead of being so hyper focused and obsessed with one of them and excluding the other. It doesn’t feel healthy or integrated to me.

To be fair, the idea of having to use negative emotions and darkness to power your magic is kinda sad. Imagine wanting to get help with anger management, but can't because it'll make you weaker as a witch. So you end up alone since no one wants to be around you when you have a rage fit. And in turn the loneliness makes your magic even stronger creating a cycle of misery.

Like they could learn to control that rage in a way that Botha powers your magic but doesn’t harm you emotionally, like how someone can focus their rage into a stronger punch it does damage but not in a reckless way (there’s also things and concepts like hatred of injustice, using the sadness from your past so it doesn’t happen to others) it could be interesting but the show just didn’t flesh it out enough

Not necessarily, I can imagine the strongest witch also being the jolliest, because she has positive and negative emotions but she expresses her negativity in a healthy way through her magic and the satisfaction of doing so makes her happier, I can also imagine the fairies being the ones with emotional issues because they are pressured to be happy 24/7 leading to toxic positivity. Just an example: in the Jake Long show there are two magical twins who can see the future, one of them only sees good stuff happening in the future and the other one only sees bad stuff happening in the future. Guess what: the one that sees good stuff is a goth and the one that sees bad stuff is a giggly sweetheart, when Jake asked them why they’re that way the goth one told him when you see all wonders ahead of you nothing really impresses you anymore and the giggly one told him when you see the most horrible things ahead of you any little good thing can cheer you up

Honestly I’m really disappointed the show didn’t do more with Mirta. It never shows her becoming friends with other fairies aside the Winx. It could’ve been such an interesting dynamic to show her learning to fit in at Alphea. I will forever be bitter we never got her Enchantix form. I also really wished she became a Winx member too. It would’ve been so cool to see her teaching the Winx about using witchcraft instead, digging more into how Cloud Tower witchcraft works and what they learn. I’m surprised you didn’t mention in the comics of Winx Club, they actually confirmed Faragonda herself actually was a witch who became a fairy instead. Maybe that explains why she’s ridiculously clumsy and ditzy in S7 as a student at Alphea who doesn’t have her fairy wings yet. (Still bitter we never got to see Faragonda’s Magic Winx) Maybe it’s just me, but I was kinda bummed they didn’t use broomsticks as a type of beginner’s course, showing most witches aside the Trix can’t just automatically levitate. Especially when the Winx have to actually use their wings to fly.
If you’re looking for a similar topic to dissect, I’d say a video about why Pop Pixie is such a terrible spinoff of Winx Club because of how it portrays elves vs pixies.
Also, forgot to mention. I LOVED Selena’s design. Its so disappointing how cool and awesome a lot of new witch designs in S6 were in comparison to the Winx getting trapped in those ugly uniforms (except Musa) and I was so disappointed Selena’s fairy form or powers were never revealed upon her becoming a fairy again. But I do agree Selena should’ve just stayed a witch instead. It could’ve been another great example of two best friends being a fairy and a witch. Heck, there’s quite a few anime magic girl shows that use witches who aren’t stereotypical old cackling ladies brewing a spell in a cauldron.

They don't cause trouble to the innocence like the Trix and Valtor, they only go after the fairies cause they use light magic while the witches use dark magic, making them rivals cause the faires believe in using positivity to fight evil while the witches believe that negativity can defeat evil. I think Iginio Straffi once said in an interview something among the lines of "there are too many shows about witches and I think that's wrong. We should make stories about good guys, like fairies" and that just leads me to think he either has a shallow view of mythical creatures and no comprehension of what witches have meant in history, or he has some other weird disdain for witches (might be related to Disney). I was really bummed to see him give us a bone on how witches are not inherently evil, and then to backtrack that in later seasons, ignoring how witches are actually depictions of minorities who didn't fit into Christian society back in the day.

The thing with witches kind of reminds me of Slytherin in Harry Potter. There are some things that seem to be borrowed from Harry Potter and witches are the group that everyone calls evil despite there being a ton of examples of that not being universally true.
I also wonder where other magical beings fit into this. Wizgiz, Palladium and Avalon aren't faeries or witches, so where do they fit into this. They all are associated with Alfea, but why? Palladium teaches potions which is normally seen as more of a witch thing and how often are the faeries even shown making potions outside of his class. He also uses technology which is the opposite of how elves are associated with nature, something he is also shown teaching about. Nobody other that Wizgiz is really shown using transformations either. And then whatever Avalon does, nobody does that either, but he seems the closest to a male equivalent to a faerie with wings and a magical form. Is their any predjudice against leprechans, elves and paladins? They never show any other than them. What do they even do?

Maybe they should have learned something from Angel's Friend, another Italian magical girl series (which a lot of the 4Kids Winx voice actors dubbed!). In that show, they really emphasized and remind you of how angels and devils worked to balance each other out. While the devils are depicted as mean-spirited, mischevious, and "evil", they're not entirely evil. For the good of the humans and the balance, they have been willing to work with angels, even showing how much they care for their Earthly charges. Winx Club season 9 could probably learn this, too, like you said. Not all witches are evil and can work with fairies to maintain the balance in the magical universe. I think one of the closest we got to fairies not always being good are the Terrestrial Fairies who were hooked on their vendettas, Diaspro (rolled eyes), and those Eraklyon fairies who transitioned to being witches under the Trix in season 6.

Honestly it infuriates me so much how much potential Politea had as an evil fairy and showing her friendship with Daphne crumble, hence why her Sirenix powers turned her into the power hungry monster she truly is. I absolutely hate Mystery of the Abyss, but it did have a lot of good ideas to make Tritannus a much better antagonist and not such a f*cking pain in the a** and whiny selfish brat.
With Kalshara, she is easily one of the worst villains ever imo, considering how arrogant and lazy she is. Her story could’ve tied to Faragonda switching from being a witch to a fairy, maybe Faragonda teaches her a witch spell or potion she believed was completely harmless, but Kalshara managed to take advantage of her naivety, hence making her struggle to befriend other fairies at Alphea. Like how the headmistress sees how Faragonda is such a good and powerful fairy who used to be a witch, while her best fairy Kalshara chose to use her powers for herself and didn’t care about hurting others to achieve her goals.

Honestly it's not even that hard to flesh out some rules for the witches' magic system. yk what i'll do it rn cuz witches deserve more respect from this show and fandom
( wall of text warning )
    - base form
Both fairies and witches have base forms that don't offer much to them beyond the ability to fly, which witches can already do and fairies as well to some degree ,albeit it's very uncontrolled and honestly unreliable. Which is why fairies need to transform to perform well in combat while Witches see transforming as a suggestion that only has minimal advantages.
    - Charmix/Gloomix
This is where things start to diverge, fairies and witches can gain a power boost by earning their Charmix/ Gloomix, Charmix requires you to overcome a personal flaw while Gloomix requires you to gain control over your inner darkness aka not allowing the dark emotions you use to fuel your power to overtake you, which requires you to overcome your trauma and turns what was once a wound into a useful weapon.
    - Enchantix / Apathix
Enchantix requires you to sacrifice yourself for someone from your own world. The same holds true for witches but with a twist, instead of sacrificing yourself for someone from your own world, you have to sacrifice yourself for someone from a world that isn't yours. Given dark magic is very self centered, they draw from their own dark memories while fairies draw their magic from the positive feelings of others. The idea is fairies need to prove they will stick by their own people as well as the rest of the world, while witches need to prove that they can extend their sense of community to others who need it, even if they may not be the same as you.
The rest of the forms stay the same, their purpose is to be used in different environments and for different missions therefore both witches and fairies should be able to get the same power ups from here on out.
Witch magic is more based on nature and their environment, hench classes like “how to ruin a natural environment” and using your surroundings to empower yourself. I would also add some abilities based on actual witchcraft spells, sigils and spell jars mayhaps?

I actually have this idea for a Winx rewrite I've been developing that explains the actual difference between Fairies and Witches.
The general point of magic is to draw power from nature and manipulate it to affect the universe. Fairies do this by learning to understand nature and channeling its power in the form of fairy transformations, while Witches create new power by taking physical aspects of nature and forcing the energy out of it (i.e. potions and runes). I think it's a more in-depth difference than "good magic and bad magic" and also explains why fairies get all these crazy forms while witches are stuck with spooky outfits and potions.

    @shadowstar8619 8 місяців тому +12

I think Rainbow even tried to give Icy some kind of backstory in Season 8, with her being the princess of a cursed world just like Bloom, to strengthen the way that they're both foils of each other. Bloom's the younger princess of Domino; Icy's the crown princess of Dyamond. Bloom has an older sister in Daphne, who was cursed/killed and eventually brought back; Icy has a younger sister named Sapphire, who's also cursed but still has yet to be returned to normal. Domino was rendered a desolate, lifeless husk of a world by the Ancestral Witches; Dyamond currently remains a frozen wasteland under the rule of the Shaman Witch.
With the other two, I don't think we've seen even a HINT of backstory beyond a cursory glimpse of what they used to look like, MAYBE, along with them being direct descendants of the Ancestral Witches. The creator originally said they were triplets, but this was obviously thrown out entirely by the above reveal of Dyamond and Sapphire. If Icy's backstory holds true and isn't retconned out of existence the same way it was thrown in, what lives did Darcy and Stormy lead before Cloud Tower? What were they really like when they were younger? What made them ultimately group up together and become so obsessed with the Dragon Flame and basically trying to continue in their ancestors' footsteps?
It also calls to mind the psychological torture chamber called the Fortress of Light. It claims to be a place that rehabilitates criminals by making them incapable of negativity, via constantly bombarding them with positivity. The process usually doesn't take longer than a month or two, and it's seen as odd that the Trix are three months in with no improvement at all. To the ladies themselves it's actual torture, and ultimately the REASON why they're still evil. The Trix were traumatized into being IMMUNE to it! How the fuck did those templars and their methods fuck up that badly and NOT have it all called out for the torture it is?! And for that matter, what would that kind of treatment do to someone who didn't deserve to be there?

    • @nicholasfarrell5981
      @nicholasfarrell5981 8 місяців тому +4

That was such a stupid retcon for many reasons: 1) oh yay, Icy only became a villain after she switched from fairy to witch! /s, 2) if seeing her sister turned into something not-human broke her that much, how the everloving deuce is she able to do that to Mirta without having some sort of mental crisis?, 3) wait, how is she not able to undo the spell on her sister if she has such an easy time transforming other people like that?, and 4) her covenmates are the Winx version of Starscream and a rabid dog, she is every ounce of screwed now that they know she's not trying to take over the universe (or whatever they're trying to do in any particular season). It would've actually made sense if Darcy was the one with the cursed sibling, because then having Icy string her along by promising to help fix them would be a great way of keeping her in line.

    100% my fanfic brain but:
If i was rewriting the witches, make them like Absol if you want to keep the "they're MAYBE evil'. Because witches power feeds off negative energy, witches are often sent to MAJOR disasters since they'd get a power boost while fixing the issue. You'd get the witches that might fall to that power, but majority of them get their tasks done as guardians. They should be doing tasks that fairies would lose too much power even setting foot in, maybe even working with teams of fairies to bring happiness back AFTER the issue is solved.
To paint a picture, imagine a world that has been cursed, the lands are dead, negative vibes everywhere. Fairies come and attempt to fix it but the curses keep draining their powers too much and while they can alleviate it a little, the land is not actually getting any better.
In comes the witches, curse breaker witches dealing with the tangled magic.
the fairies later come in a do the last spark, bringing it back to flourish now that the witches have brought it back to life.
Like, negative feelings shouldn't be treated as the enemy, and you can't be happy all the time!
Which is why you could have the most adorable pair of a witch/fairy girlfriends that help pick each other up and be a hecking power couple.

NGL Selena’s outfit is one of the best in the entire show. It shows how you can be a fairy and have a more goth look. Even her fairy outfit is able to show how cute she looks with having black in her gloves, wings and outfit. She isn’t forced to wear lighter/brighter colors and pastels to “look more cutesy or fairylike” even Nebula had a darker palette, focusing more on dark blue and purple. Also, Faragonda is confirmed to be a former witch who chose to be a fairy instead, but she has NOTHING that is grey or black in her outfit except maybe her glasses (technically silver but whatever)

@Flyboy1953 ok, agree to disagree. I personally say fairies can rock goth and punk aesthetics without having to look like Stella or Flora 24/7, the most “cutesy” imo. Heck, Musa’s original design with her cargo pants and one sleeved shirt made it look like she was tempted to be a witch instead, which is ironic considering she’s the one that hates witches the most. If you look in S6, you’ll see quite a few witch students with brighter colors. You’re making it sound like “a fairy looks stupid as a goth when she’s not transformed” I personally love both more punk and goth looks but also have a lot of girly clothes when I’m on vacation or going to events. It doesn’t have to be an “either or” situation. Personally, I absolutely loved that Mirta’s little hair accessory stays when she’s a fairy. It’s probably something she made as a friendship charm with Lucy or something, showing she hasn’t forgotten her roots as a witch and doesn’t mind using witchcraft occasionally, she just feels much more comfortable being a fairy instead. And to be fair, Mitzi and her friends became goth fairies in S4 (I know they weren’t real fairies, but still) and Stella made some awesome goth fairy costumes for the fashion show in S6.

@Flyboy1953 never thought of it that way. Like, Icy has a lot of brighter colors too, and she’s the most powerful witch in the show. Yes, Beast’s outfit changes from a red cloak to having more elegant looks as he became more human again. It’s similar to John Smith in Pocahontas, a lot of people don’t realize this but his outfit changes throughout the movie, showing his character growth from being an arrogant captain to someone who really loves and cares about Pocahontas and her people’s safety. His armor disappears throughout the movie, so when he’s arrested, he’s literally only in his underwear, showing he doesn’t want to fight anymore. And because he doesn’t have armor on anymore, its also why he’s seriously injured saving Pocahontas’s father from being shot to death by his former boss. Back to Winx Club, in S6 I absolutely HATED how all the Winx got trapped in the exact same color palette to force them to match more. Some of the outfits were a hit or miss except Musa’s and Bloom’s imo. Legit, the outfits they wear on Earth with the denim accents would’ve been EVERYTHING if the designers used the girls’ signature colors instead of forcing all of them into pink and blue. I just don’t like how pink is the most “girly” color and that’s why the show kept putting the Winx in pinks, especially Bloom. Legit, in S8 when Enchantix came back, I seriously don’t get why everyone except Tecna’s outfits had extra pink. It’s one thing to make the outfits less revealing (despite I completely hated the redesigns except Tecna and somewhat Musa) but I don’t understand why Enchantix was redesigned with so much pink

    • @kristinahuchison2511

@Flyboy1953 point is I don’t understand why Enchantix’s color palette changed so much to look more girly or cutesy by drowning everyone except Tecna in pinks. Yep! Tecna’s was actually a slight improvement imo, I absolutely LOVED the wings had more color instead of being different shades of purple, but also her original outfit seemed a little plain considering how little clothing she had on. Which I found hilarious, considering Tecna isn’t the one to be wearing super revealing outfits lol. But the worst one by far was Stella and Flora’s. Flora’s wings had a gorgeous blend of natural green and pink, but got golden and pink colors instead (why?) and Stella’s Enchantix was an absolute nightmare to look at. I get hers was definitely going to be the most painful to redesign because she was wearing a literal bikini originally, and all of a sudden the Winx can’t have their bellies and upper thighs showing anymore because of the younger audience watching. That was always something that annoyed me to insanity was when Believix was finally introduced, a LOT of the designs were less revealing, I don’t know if the show had gotten complaints from parents or other people the outfits from S1-3 were waay too revealing and Rainbow needed to watch how revealing certain outfits were. That might explain why Enchantix didn’t stick around for many episodes in S4, which sucks considering (not counting Charmix) Enchantix imo got the least amount of time to shine. I know Sirenix didn’t get too much either, but it was used a lot more. It really stunk the most beloved transformation was ironically enough the one that got the least amount of screentime, especially with fairies like Tecna and Bloom who got theirs last (in comparison to Leila, Stella and Musa being the first three) But the most irritating part of Enchantix was the fact it didn’t really have “new spells” or abilities for the Winx to really work to master. They can simply use fairy dust and miniaturization whenever they want. Versus Believix and Sirenix had special abilities they had to work harder to make their special powers more effective. It’s just so disappointing how the most “powerful” form in a lot of fans’ eyes was the one that kinda got the least amount of attention.
I know that was a problem a lot of fans had when Rainbow started doing two new transformations instead of 1. It kinda makes earning new powers less earned and cheap because they don’t have to put as much effort into earning them, and they can’t reuse old forms either (which come on, why is that a rule?) like with Butterflix (or Buttflix as I love to call it) all they did was stop a rock monster from kidnapping what was essentially a magical rat? Even Roxy doesn’t get the power and SHE’S the one to figure out how to stop the monster. Or with Cosmix, it was simply given to the laziest ruler of the Magical Universe? I’m not kidding Queen Dorana (?) doesn’t actually do anything to help the dying stars aside giving the Winx a portion of her power to give them the ability to heal stars?? COSMIX IS ESSENTIALLY USELESS IN BATTLES TOO

As someone with a long time passion for stories about both witches and fairies(and mermaids but they’re not really relevant here), the treatment of witches in Winx Club always rubbed me the wrong way.
I actually saw someone do a speedpaint of their redesigns of the (season 1) Winx members and in their rewrite they made Flora study both fairy and witch magic, which I found surprisingly fitting as Flora always seemed to have an affinity for potions, something typically more associated with witches rather than fairies. Also it would be interesting to see someone wielding both types of magic rather than having to chose between them.

Fairies study practical magic to fight and help civilians, while witches treat it like science, studying the different types of magic, where it comes from and how emotions influence it. And they also make potions because I think that’s a cute trope lol

Season two is my favorite, but it has a lot of wasted potential. In fact, I have a theory that it was rewritten, because there are a lot of things they introduce that seem like they're going to be important to the story, and then they just aren't.
Wizgiz introduces the idea of yin and yang (and says there is an even more powerful third force), Griffin talks about the differences between fairy and witch magic, Darkar's power is oppositional to the power of the Great Dragon and he wants to obtain the Ultimate Power (possibly the third power Wizgiz talked about) and Faragonda mentions the Lord of the Templars: the man who defeated Darkar. Even when Brandon asks if they should ask him for help, Faragonda says he is very dangerous and we see his face for the first time. And all this comes to nothing ???

  • @astralambrosia9952

Season 2 was fascinating in how it represented magic, specifically the 4Kids dub because I grew up with it too. I loved the idea that witches were the fairies opposites in that fairies use positive emotions to power magic while witches use negative ones. Plus having Bloom be controlled at the end basically becoming a "Dark" fairy was so good because it showed that magic was even more complex than dark/light, positive/negative, etc., and that the magic world may not even know how magic can be fully utilized.
I don't even have a personal headcanon for how a "dark" fairy works! Part of me thinks it's purely because Bloom, who uses positive emotions as her magic source, was forced to use negative emotions through a form of possession. Another side of me wonders if you can straddle the line of positive/negative and by leaning slightly more one way or the other you could invoke the other side of magic as a source, potentially finding a balance of the 2. So you could have a "Dark" fairy or a "Light" witch.
I do wish the magic system had more focus and structure because the first 3 seasons did such a good job making it look like there are limits to the system, but I don't think they pushed it far enough.

Honestly on the thought of Selina staying a witch, imagine Bloom visits Selina while she's training with Eldora and see she's struggling with Fairy magic, and Selina mentions she always has, and even if the power she got from Acheron wasn't all hers, it felt better and easier to use Witch magic, and Bloom brings up the concept of Trans Magic to her and what happened with Mirta, how she thrived in her new identity and all. Leading to Selina asking Bloom if she'd be okay with her staying a witch, Bloom chuckling as she just says long as she doesn't tie her up in a snake again, then she's good. The old friends laughing over it.
Just an idea how it could tackle both ways of Trans Magic are awesome for the people who want it, and make Bloom and Selina's relationship a bit more real

While the concept of magic users being able to switch sides is interesting, I think I'd be better overall for a magic user to be born with an affinity for either light or darkness. Especially when you consider how much it doesn't make sense when it comes to the power system. Witches can "naturally" fly while fairies can not unless their old. Fairies earn multiple transformations they can switch between while witches, I assume, just progressively get stronger and can only "transform" if they get their hands on the power source for a form, aka Dark Sirenix. The others you could just say are power-ups equivalent to the fairy versions.
With the whole light and dark switch, we should have seen a character or villain utilize both to complement or offset the strengths and weaknesses of both. As you said, it's pretty clear that they did not think this through. Hopefully, the reboot addresses this.

Honestly, I think that the ability to switch between being a witch and a fairy was a bad idea. I'm working on a rewrite fic that features (among other things) Mirta as a full-blown Winx and a witch, and I'm currently running with the idea that Ms. Griffin doesn't teach her students how to transform until 2nd year because of how potentially dangerous uninhibited acces to Dark Magic can be if you're not in control of your emotions (which is also why the non-Trix witches aren't as strong in Season 1); Mirta ends up transforming during the trek to rescue the pixies (she's brought along because her magic won't be inhibited by any defenses Darkar has against Light Magic) during an ambush, because she's willing to do whatever she needs to in order to protect the people she cares about. Basically, my thought is that witches need to be honest with themselves and confront things that they aren't honest with themselves about to achieve their transformations . . . until Believix, where I'm going with "these forms are 'extra', so she levels up the same as everyone else" (though in-universe I'm probably going to make everything after Enchantix be forms that are available to both witches and fairies, since they're all situational).

Witches are treated as dangerous by default due to the destabilizing nature of negative emotion. They are erratic and often prone to non-sense decisions that boarder on obsession.
The challenge for a witch is learning to harness that inner hurt for their own ends without being lost to it. The challenge for a fairy is learning to turn pain and loss into opportunity for growth and happiness without being delusionally optimistic.

But after that I don’t get it

i think the issue with witches in the show is all in how they do magic. witches,as explained draw their energy from darkness and (more to the point) negative emotions and this creates an inherent distrust of them because what better way to gain power sourced by negative emotions than to CREATE negative emotions by causing trouble and hurting people? think about the trix: why are they so strong? outside of getting extra power by teaming up with more experienced villains, what makes them so special? it's their cruelty. they are total bitches by nature and that generates a LOT of dark energy and negative emotions as a result so their power level is above most witches and this is the exact kind of power that the rest of the world is scared of from every other witch and the possibility that any given one of them could be as cruel as the trix.

I'm really hoping in the Reboot they take cues from Bayonetta and the Umbra Witches. Powerful Women who draw their power from hell and demons but use that power to protect mankind.

When I was a kid I always thought witches in winx club powers were drawn from external powers while fairy draw their powers from internal power. I always thought witches had started stronger from having power in reach pulling from external sources and knowledge. While fairies grow over time through internal growth.
I wish we knew Griffin which specialist or Fargonda source of magic too. I wish Fargonda transformed.

A thing I find funny in the 4kids dub is when Grizelda states that they have no punishment for trespassing on Cloudtower because what they do will be worse, cut to a few episodes later and the girls get their magic temporarily taken away and have to clean the whole ass school.....for trespassing at Cloudtower

I've always felt the same when it came to witches. A good witch? A dark fairy? Those would have made such good plot points in season 6. I've come up with some ideas Thomas, please hear them out.
Selina: I've always found the idea of Selina studying under Eldora executed very poorly. So here's my idea: After magic returns to Earth in Season 4, Selina, who has lived a quiet life till then, runs into Griffin. Selina, who has heard about witches from Earth fairies, talks to griffin and, gets herself admitted into Cloudtower. Her spiteful hatred of Bloom(I wrote up something to explain this: Bloom and Selina were playing together in a field of flowers. It was a normal day and they were around 8 years of age. Suddenly, the specters attack them and knock out Selina. Bloom falls and just when she was going to get hit by the specters, Eldora runs out of her hut and drives away the specters. Since that day, Bloom forgets all about Selina(ill explain y) and due to this, Selina stated hating Bloom.) and the negative emotion along with a thirst to prove herself, she finds out that she is the Witch of Snakes. In toatl, Selina is just misunderstood and misses her friend Bloom and does not understand why all their years of friendship is forgotten by her.
Eldora: Eldora is a dark fairy. When she was young, Eldora used to be a fairy, but her negative emotion towards their naiveness and good magic twisted her fairy power into a sort of dark fairy. When she figured out what happened, she was VERY UPSET. But she found a loophole. After years of searching and mingling with humans, she found the Legendarium. She found an empty page, and she emptied her dark powers and allowed it to twist and turn into her dark side: Acheron. (This all to place years before Bloom and Selina were born)
Now here's why Bloom forgot about Selina: ELDORA SUMMONED THE SPECTERS. She saw Bloom and Selina and crafted a twisted plan that I wrote in my Rewrite of Season 6 ( I have my own rewrite.). She erased all Blooms memories of Selina while Bloom was unconscious to make Selina have a resentment for Bloom. Then, she knew she would become and witch. She later 'gives' Selina the Legendarium so she would become friends with Acheron so Eldora could manipulate her into her master plan.

See?? The world building and conflict possibilities surrounding the witches and their place in magical society are so interesting and I'm so frustrated that they're left completely unexplored! If only there were a remake intended for older audiences that could expand on this subject properly!!
I won't rest until Winx gets the high quality remake it deserves istg

10:31 You could argue that at this point all of the witches from seasons 1-3 graduated with a good majority of the new class idolizing the Trix due to their infamy and power

Tackling the prejudices against witches is a plot that's just sitting there in Winx Club and it's frustrating they never did anything with it. Especially for me who's been ride or die for witches my whole life.
Witches dealing with dark energy and negative emotions is a concept you can do so much with, especially when paired with fairies dealing with positive emotions. Where's the "one of the girls struggles dealing with her emotions because she keeps pushing all her problems and negativity down instead of dealing with it in a healthy way and ends up getting help from a witch to process her emotions" plotline.
On the topic of evil fairies, I think they could channel the "bullies who grow up to become nurses/caretakers" energy.

Griffin wasn't this evil when I first saw her in season 6. Sure she's strict, but I would have never in a million years have guessed that Griffin could be so demented that she would ruin Alfea's Back to school dance or have caused the Trix to be the way they are. (I've only seen seasons 6 and 7, so I can't confirm this for sure.)

5:10 When Griffin says this, I think it might allude to her bitterness with Faragonda and Saladin. She feels betrayed.

My headcanon was always that "witches won't work together" only had excuses as a reason just to prevent that there will never be a coven like the ancestrial witches
