The Deathworld Trilogy by Harry Harrison is a mixed bag trio. The first book was published in 1960. If you like military / action sci-fi that's heavy on worldbuilding, this might be for you.
Deathworld was good but the Stainless Steel Rat series is a blast!
I recently found a 1968 hardback edition of The Deathworld Trilogy at my local antique store and was really intrigued by the first chapter. I’m excited to read more!
Thank you for your review.
The Deathworld was also my first exposure to H. Harrison's works. The initial idea is not very plausible or "realistic" ( no real humans could survive such a situation - only the stress itself would have been lethal for them..) but it was an interesting, breathless adventure. Especially the first.
I really recommend his To the stars trilogy. I have the omnibus version and I re-read it constantly. I really enjoy your reviews. Well done.
I read Deathworld when I was a kid. The med-kit remains burned into my memory. I just thought that was the coolest thing. Even Star Trek didn't have something like that.
My younger self enjoyed "the captive universe" best of the harry harrison books that I read. A generation starship but they are Aztec!
I was excited for you when I saw the Deathworld cover. I remember them fondly, I think teenage me got more value out of 2 and 3 than you did but I would have to say that the first one is the cream of the crop. I never read Coils but I have a suspicion it might not be the best of Fred or Roger - so I'm saying don't write those authors off if Coils isn't great. Their output varies but their best work is excellent.
That is the book I read many years ago. I thought it was written by Heinlein, but have found out lately that it was Harrison. And i do agree that the second and third books weren't as good as the first.
The early stainless steel rat books are fun too, but my favorite Harry Harrison is Bill, the Galactic Hero.
I'm really hoping to find that one
The most popular Harry Harrison series is probably "The Stainless Steel Rat" series - I can highly recommend reading the graphic novel collection published by the UK publishers Rebellion, adapted by Carlos Ezquerra (artist) & Kelvin Gosnell (writer). They're lots of fun.
The first book, at least, sounds awesome!
I really like zelazny a lot. I have just read two of his books over the last few months, in fact...A Night in the Lonesome October, and Creatures of Light and Darkness...both of which I loved, for different reasons. Creatures -- was a little impenetrable at times, but it's a book I definitely plan to come back to more than once. i feel he's a writer who really invites that.
Not familiar with this collaboration though. he did a few of them! He has one with Philip K. Dick as well.
I think I own the Dick collab. Coils sucks pretty badly. Not judging Z. by it.
They probably packaged the trilogy into one book, because most readers had the same reaction as you about 2 & 3. I’ll add one to the list to look for
Exactly my kind of thing.
Hahah. Your disappointment in Coils being selected was palpable. Hope it turns out to be a gem!
Completely unrelated but I’ve been wanting to drop a comment about some books to keep an eye on during your jaunts. I know you don’t like Fantasy genre but if you ever encounter the Trade Paperbacks and Hardcovers of the Malazan series by Steven Erikson they go for top dollar basically everywhere. They’re incredibly difficult to find but regarded as the premium format to collect. Just wanted to inform you in case you were unaware. Great video as always. Keep being you.
Knew it was well liked but didn't know the books were scarce. Appreciate the tip.
First book sounds really good. Now you made me regret not buying this months ago when I had it in my hands at Half Price Books...
You haven’t read Lord of Light? Forget your book choosing ap for the moment and read Lord of Light! The longer you put it off the more you will regret not having read it sooner. It blew my mind.
Yeah, I really love the first book and revisit on occasion but have no desire to return to 2 and 3 lol
Hey, could you please add Bowl of Heaven to your list?
Would love to see it get a shot at getting read :)
I read the first one, lots of fun. I like harry harrison. He's got a great one called west of eden where evolved dinosaurs and people live on earth together.
I have that one
That was my introduction to Harrison. Love his "clear unassuming prose style".
@@michaelhansen7516 his books ate fun. I recently got a huge haul of them including the homeward/wheelworld ones. hoping to get to those soon.
I hate to be that guy but the planets name is pronounced pie-rus, great video though. I disagree with you on deathworld 2 and 3, I found the sequals to be extremely interesting philosophically on top of providing a really interesting universe building tools.
Don't read the Dorsai books out of order because they won't make sense. If you're interested in the Dorsai books start with "Tatics of Mistake"
I have an omnibus hardcover of the dorsai books
Sorry that the second book didn't work for you. It's one of my favorites because it explores a very strange civilization and the attitudes that evolved among the people. My only complaint is that it wasn't longer!
Speaking of an old sci-fi that aged well, have you read 1929 novel of Jan Weiss "House of a Thousand Floors"?
Hadn't heard of it, will look out for it
Do you have "Make Room, Make Room" by Harry Harrison? It was made into the movie "Soylent Green"
I'm aware of it but I don't have it
66.666% of the Deathworld trilogy is in Project Gutenberg.
Is Pyrrus where swordgrass grows?
I remember something like that
