- Playing Technique: Played right on the neck pickup with high strength. Low action, sharp touch on the fingers. Neck pickup only, full tone
- Gear Sound: On amp, high gain and volume, some bass, lots of mids, a little treble. On eq added low end and presence on 2k, cut a bit of 500hz or so. Lots of compression

Not available on devices, you can watch it on your computer. I did my best with the tone, i'm still not entirely happy with it. It is a very hard and technical song, specifically some fills in the chorus and the solo. To really get the attack and feel you need to pluck strong (more info on description) but no need to bounce on the strings too much, since the action is very low. A snappy, clicky sound is what you want to get. The line itself is really great. You get the idea the song is mostly constructed around bass. About harmony, you could say is centered on F Lydian, with a chorus more into D Major. The pre chorus uses more exotic harmony of which i'm still not quite sure:
F Lydian (Key of C (no alterations))
I F (F A C)
II G (G B D)
III Am (A C E)
IV Bdim (B D F)
V C (C E G)
VI Dm (D F A)
VII Em (E G B)
D Major (F#, C#)
I D (D F# A)
II Em (E G B)
III F#m (F# A C#)
IV G (G B D)
V A (A C# E)
VI Bm (B D F#)
VII C#dim (C# E G)
Don't worry about the tone, it's amazing!
Now sing while playing!
I was expecting this comment
CoverSolutions Don't forget the one that asks you to play the keyboard with your feet too
CoverSolutions Where did you learn about theory? I've been watching your videos since I've started playing and I'm pretty happy with my progress but I don't know where to start with theory.
Instead of commenting about how great Geddy is (which he is), how about we congratulate this man for figuring out this part and playing it like a beast? Absolutely beautiful, amazing playing man! I’m blown away 😄
This guy is seriously 3/4 of where I got all my musical passion, skill, and sense from. Back when I was starting out and learning tool songs (46&2 was the first song I ever learned all the way through, thanks to my own instructor and this channel), to now with all this tough stuff, I genuinely owe most of my creativity and skill to this channel
@@zack7993 facts, this dude goes crazy, he helped me grow alot as a player
Totally agree! This guy totally nailed this song, especially that solo in the middle!😎👍
damn right
👏🏼
Holy fuck Geddy can sing, play keyboards with feet, and play this all at the same time?
He's a fucking god
The man is just amazing. I met him in a coffee shop in Barrie, ON and it was surreal. No one knew why I was freaking out over him and I just felt bad for everyone else around lol. I asked about how he practiced this and he just said "well the band needed a keyboard so I just did it" like it just comes naturally to him. True god amongst men.
@@Nothing2Interesting That's fucking awesome bro that you met Geddy. My fave bassist.
@@markusaurelius777 Same bro, I wish I had something more than a coffee cup that he could have signed at the time.
@@Nothing2Interesting I bet!
Neil: So what time signature should we use for this track?
Alex and Geddy: Yes.
Rush*
Neil: So Geddy, do you want to play bass, sing, or do math?
Geddy: yes
Neil wasn't shy of his sporadic time changes. Look at YYZ. Lol
@@ianspeight8313 Neil wasn’t the original drummer though.
@@xuphy9503 your point being? Ringo wasn't the original drummer of the Beatles so he's not great?
And don't forget to sing while doing this
you had to remind me. :-|
Haha
Lmfao
Geddy Lee is truly a genius)
@@ivans.191 genius doesnt even begin to decribe Geddy. He is a god amongst men.
New Difficulty Added:
-Easy.
-Medium.
-Hard.
-Extreme.
-Insane.
-Geddy Lee.
And then Les Claypool and Jaco Pastorius above Geddy.
@@GlaceonStudios The funny thing is that Les Claypool considers Geddy as one of his masters and vica versa. :) Geddy said he learnt a lot from Les. Both are great and super talented guys.
@@nadel-fu4wz and both super humble. Theyre both masters in the own right.... Les for creativity, Geddy for driving rythem and total music composition. Les is just out for fun, he even stated himself.
Y'know, I watched the first half of this video thinking "Yeah, ok, this song is doable, I could learn this." And then you got to the solo...
Sean Aaron The sixteenth notes during the solo are fucking horrible. Ones you can get those, it's doable. But good god, are they hard to play at that speed.
That solo raped my soul haha
It took me like, a week. The solo was just kcmksmlxk
You can do it. Just take it slow. Gradually speed up. Do it in small pieces then string them together.
Nah, you can do it. Let's talk about difficult after he does La Villa Strangiato. :)
3:16
Ignore this yall im jus trying to practice the solo so im marking the beginning
Dante Rosales make this the top comment cs
The way you play so many different tones with the same bass is beyound me.
I noticed that too !!!
For a second I was like "I can totally play this" then the solo hit and I lost all hope
Gordon Ramsay just play it without the sixteenth notes and you’ll be fine
Agree with @Seth Gartner, yeah the 16ths are just ornaments, spice.
0.75 speed on loop, you'll have it down in no time
@@sethgartner5057 the sixteenths aren't that's difficult if you use a 3 finger rake technique. that's how i learned it and it wasn't actually too bad
Same 😂
It's not even the difficulty of the solo that makes it hard, give me any of those parts repeated in a normal riff and I could have them down in a day or two. But man, the musical memory Geddy Lee had to write that, remember it, and record it (provided it wasn't improv, idk), that's what makes it so tough. And the fact that coversolutions was able to not only completely memorize it but also nail Geddy's sound and dynamics with vastly different gear is mind-blowing. It's taken me about 6 months to get that solo down completely, but thanks to you I've almost got it
Dear God. I never knew the bassline behind the solo was so ridiculous. Bravo!
I've started to learn this bass line in the end of 2018. At that time, it seemed hard (especially the solo), and I was comfortable with the idea of not learning ir. I learned other songs, other techniques, and this week, two years later and more mature, I finally nailed it. I feel glad with myself, but I need to thank everyone that helped me in this path:
Geedy Lee, for creating this line
My friends, for supporting me, and of course
Sebastian, that is one of my favourite player and bassist, that helped me a lot in this path, to keep learning and discovering new horizons on music in general
So, thank you, for everything.
Gracias por todo
Obrigado por tudo
Jesus, how did Geddy not destroy his wrists playing this song? The force needed to properly play most Rush tunes is insane and isn't relaxed at all. The one thing I like the most about your covers is you really try to nail the play style of the player. Too many people try to just play the notes, but not the attack and what not. The part where people say "the tone is in your fingers." And Geddy is definitely one of those people.
Why do you think it shouldn't be relaxed? It really should. Applying more strength also needs control. Try checking more info on description to get more details
There's this fender video where Geddy explains his picking technique ... Not a bass player... But I guess what he does is sorta unique.
That plus years of practise. 👍
you can play with lots of force and still be relaxed
@@TheRobotZ In fact you have to play relaxed (as opposed to tense), otherwise you won't have control, and you won't physically last. And that's what practice and lessons are for.
Favorite Geddy to answer to how he plays softer passages: I don't play soft.
I love that the solos is just Geddy being like "this is garbage, I'll make it better"
That's kind of a shitty thing to say. Just because it's the best part of the song doesn't mean the rest is garbage.
People focus too much on execution and technique, but to me, you're becoming a master of tune. Every video I watch, you use the same bass, but the tune is almost as perfect as the original you're covering from. This requires hard work. Congrats man. And thanks for the tutorial in the description.
I have learned more bass from your speechless videos than anywhere else. Thanks for just showing us how it's done.
I love how his left hand flails open during the verse when he plays an open g
I've always done this when playing this song too. Good to know I'm in good company!
@@joshuaboniface Mine too. Can't help it.
I was trying this, then I decided to go get some tacos. Best choice in my life ever man.
*Geddy already has a slaptone by just how hard he plucks*
Good god man.. I came back to this after playing along to bass tabs and I just have to say again how fucking spot on not only the tab is, but how right on point the tone is!! Holy fuck man you nailed it on this song. Absolutely astonishing man...
Thanks for putting the chords above the tab. I need to learn theory and this is really helping. I think this is a great song for this.
I think i had an aneurism during that solo...
I'm not sure if it seemed more difficult simply because the eighth notes were grouped into couples, but I feel like they should have been grouped into triplets because we're in 12/8 time. However, I don't know if the way Lee emphasized those notes during that solo lent itself more to duplet grouping or not...
ya dude same
When the solo comes I pretend that I have to scratch my back or that I just remembered something important to put on the calendar.
LMFAO
Me before 😁😁😁 .. me during solo 🤨🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺.... Me after 😭🤮😭🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮💀💀
You should do red barchetta by rush also!
Yes
my new project to learn in the next 6 months hopefully practicing everyday
Great playing. Wow. That solo section. . . insane.
Yes!!! Finally some more RUSH. I would love to see The Analog Kid, The Trees, Leave That Thing Alone and Red Barchetta with the live outro solo covered as well
kero gunso +1 analog kid
After hours and hours i almost got half of the solo down! 🥳
The tone is spot on, I love this so much
Absolutely masterfully done man , there's so much going on that is lost in the wash on the album recordings that seeing you play it makes this even more amazing to see covered . Righteous!
I never tired of listening to this, AWESOME!
That was so enjoyable to watch. I consider the instrumental break in this song to be on its own level for all three of them. Joyful noise!
Thank you sooooo much for making this video. I just found out that I’m playing bass and singing this in 8 days. Your video is absolutely perfect! I’m now supporting you on Patreon. Thanks again!
Thank you - I've always wanted to learn that bass line and thanks to your video/tab combo I've finally managed it. Breaking the solo break into bite-sized sections and then stringing them all together worked well for me. Time-consuming for sure, but absolutely worth it. Thanks again!
I have waited soooooo long to see another Rush video. I wasn't expecting my favorite song... more RUSH please!!!
perhaps Spirit of the radio, Fly by night, or literally any other rush song :)
I am a stickler when it comes to Rush. I let nothing slide. That, kicked serious ass, my dude. Well done!🤘
Love this cover. Marvelous execution, thanks for this.
Rush were genius. Every day I love them more and more.
I am very proud of myself for being able to do the first part of this almost good enough to know what song im playing. But that solo, respect to you for doing that i dont know how Geddy did stuff like that for so many years
Geddy's vocals high in the skies...incredible power.❤
Yes - Heart of the Sunrise please!
light535 good song, i have this song in my channel
Yess
Great job! I am learning electric and acoustic but its fascinating seeing the base line heart of this song being played out note by note, thanks!
It's taken 3 and a half years of bass playing. I think I can finally play this song
Well done man! That was awesome, thumbs up!
Woow!! Congrats! Nailed the whole song AND the instrumental part... that one is a masterpiece. Great tone man! One of my favs from Rush, keep making covers from prog rock (and Jamiroquai ;D). Greetings from Argentina!
The bass tone is spot on!
Hey! I’d just like to say thank you for your work. Played a great benefit last night that has been going on for 20 years. Raises $ to buy instruments for kids. Found out day before I would need to fill in with one of the other bands playing to do Spirit and Freewill. Grew up learning these but it’s been 30 years. You, sir, are a life saver👍
Phenomenal performance!!!!
Great stuff. Good camera angle. Nice legible tab. Best play along videos on UA-cam. Don't change a thing.
Dude you're incredible. Thanks for making all of these transcriptions.
Been waiting long for this!!!!
Fantastic! I’m currently learning this bass line and this has been really helpful.
Absolutely amazing
that was awesome ! you nailed it! Great Playing! Thank You!
Awesome stuff man! Loved the bass tone and above all, your playing did justice to a ripper track
Amazing Work!!!
Beautiful work
Desde Chile disfrutando y aprendiendo. Muchas gracias
Holy hell. I had no idea so much was happening with the bass. One reason, my mind would try to single out the standard guitar. Much appreciate this work. Brilliant.
Good job! I'd love for you to do more Rush! Limelight, Spirit of Radio, Red Barchetta, Fly by Night
Keep up the great work, have learned a lot from your videos!
I'm a veteran guitar player but I love to grab my bass and attempt to play along with this song. Man what a workout but I just have the best time!! Geddy is the absolute man and this an amazing cover!
sounds really good , thanks for all you do
Great Job! Cheers from Brazil.
Uhhhh, this guy is good. Very good. You can also tell that instrument is set up beautifully, and that’s a huge part of the battle.
That was fantastic! What skill...
Dude, you are absolutely great!!!
This is one one of my favorite song from Rush , well play buddy!
SICK
That was amazing by all means!!
You have the same sound from the original recording , i cant believe it!!
Puxa vida, muito obrigado! Eu rezei por essa aula. Saludos del Brazil! Muchas Gracias
You killed that solo man
Hats off to you
Nailed the tone dude and the song obviously.
Great job!
nice job
nice bass
great tone
2nd favorite rush song, thanks
BRO!!!!! I stand for the anthem and this transcription too ........lmao ........awesome
Geddy is astonishing!
THIS CHANNEL NEEDS MORE RUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent! Subscribed.
Omg it's back! WOOT
this is beastly geddy lee so awesome
If your videos have shown me one thing, it's the incredible number of unique tones you can get out of a single bass. How the hell did you make that thing sound identical to a Rickenbacker? Madness.
If you know wnough mixing, mastering and tone shaping with your bass you can do more than you think
Wow puro compas de amalgama, que natural suena la cancion, sin duda mi banda favorita
You're a beast bass player!
Yay, it's back!
Awesome 👍
OOOOOOOH. I was very pleased to see this
Well done sir.
we need more primus and rush!! you're cool, man)
God-like.
Awesome
Thank you.
personally for me to get the solo 100%, I just listened to the song while working, and played through it at full speed a few times. every time I went through it, I could hear myself getting better and better. Its as simple as just playing it again and again. the solo is rather long, but some parts are similar, so no point of putting at 75% speed to play it.
Yeah I'll come back next year for this one.
Bravo
Awesome!
This song has the best instrumental section in the world.
Geddy is god
quite possibly
Just played the part at 3:14 with out missing a note and it felt so good
Geddy is the Maan!!!!
Outstanding..🤘🤘🤘🤘
