      It's never really clear, right? 😅 The first time I've had played using one of these Heads, that was my big concern. Because I needed really clean sound. It was a borrowed amp, the first time playing live with that band.

    If you want the Dimebag tone you'll need an mxr 6-band graphic EQ pedal and a furman PQ-3 I believe, paired with this amp of course.

    If he had engaged the boost switch, you would have heard that this amp actually has a lot more gain available. I have the same amp and all you need is a bit of a boost in front and a 10-band EQ in the loop to get massive metal tones.

    I love this amp. Bought mine off my cousin about 12 years ago with the matching cab for about $300! Definitely a steal. It was out of commission for a long time because i was young and had no clue what i was doing with it. Recently got it serviced and it screams again. I did have some trouble really finding the tone i wanted from it but that was super simple to take care of. Put my TS808 mini in the front and a BOSS GE7 eq in the loop. This thing is vicious now. I love it

    • @JoeGuitar
      @JoeGuitar 8 років тому

      I am the dude that sold this amp to Fluff. I used to run both channels at once. On the green channel I would turn the Gain to 10,bass to 10, mid and treble to zero ! Then I would blend on the amount of the green channel I wanted with the RED channel which I had the eq dimed. This way I could eliminate the Furman parametric eq I had in the FX loop. The green channel only purpose was to add low end girth. Running both channels at once made this amp very versatile tone wise. I could get lots of different tones. The amp was pretty awesome.

    \m/

    • @nolasludge
      @nolasludge 8 років тому +1

      Yeah, but I will say that the Ampeg VH140C needs no boost. That is an amp that sounded great right out of the box. In fact, anytime I go to jam with some metal musicians, that is my go to amp. It's super easy to dial in, and there is no "need" for pedals.

    • @Thanksforaskingme
      @Thanksforaskingme 8 років тому +2

      i have a 1991 vh140c and it is much better than this. no boost needed. I have Marshall's first mosfet solid state version of the jcm 800 and it sounds amazing but needs a boost

    • @nolasludge
      @nolasludge 8 років тому +1

      Yeah, a lot of solid state amps get buzzy sounding when you get into high gain territory, so it's usually best to dial it back and supplement with an OD. That's why I love my Ampeg so much because it doesn't get really buzzy at the saturation point.

  • @lostinthemasses

    Someone gave me that amp because he thought it was broken by how the distortion channel sounded. I checked it out and after cracking it open, noticed it was intact and had zero issues. The guy who gave me the amp told me to keep it, so it sat under my bed for 4 years until I needed money for recording. Threw it in Craigslist and it took 6 months to get rid of it (I live in Southern California, so that's an insanely long time). Finally sold it for $140, which is $140 more than I paid for it, so fine by me. I couldn't stand that amps' tone, even the clean channel didn't impress me, which is really saying something for solid-state. Lots of people try to replicate the Dime tone with the L-500XL and the '59 neck, and I guess if you used that setup with a boost pedal, you'll probably get that Dimebag tone. That being said, I got a way closer Dimebag tone with the Randal RGT-100, which I strongly suggest over this junky thing.

    It would be cool to see a video on how close you can get to Dime's sound with this amp, especially if you could include most of the elements of his rig (furman parametric eq, mxr 6 band, flanger/doubler, bill lawrence pickup, etc.)

    • @JoeGuitar
      @JoeGuitar 8 років тому

      I had all that stuff.... and tried.... but I couldn't get it close at all. A big part of his tone was shear VOLUME driving those poor speakers into excursion. I wish I knew what he used for speaker drivers in his live rig. I saw plenty of Randall cabs in his stage rig .. which if left stock would have contained Jaguar 50watt spkrs.. they actually sound pretty good too. So much of Dime's tone was in his hands. And I'm definitely not Dime !!! lolss... Best of luck in yer tone quest !

RGT does sound familiar.Rg 100es is indentical to the RG 80es except it's 80 watts and have grey carpet. Dimebag Darrel has used every Randall except for the Bass head version and the ultra rare an beast 1980s Randall 100 watt tube head. Yeah, you read correctly not type o there is a 100 watt tube head version, rumor has it tube head version is so close to a Mesa.

    Sounds great with high gain and plenty of mids, though I would have liked to hear it with a bit less low end.
    I'm thinking you should show a few different eq settings on the amp during the intro-jam.
    [Start With Your Favorite EQ] [all EQ settings at 50%] [40% Bass, 100% Mid, 50% Treble] [60% Treble/Bass, 0% Mids] [Favorite Tone Again]

      I bought the orange cr120 h because of that demo, ended up being the shittiest amp I ever owned. It stopped working twice, and than would randomly come on again, (yes I have a proper furman surge protector). The dirty channel sounded digital and dry( even though the amp was analog). I am now using a dual Rec and a fender super sonic

      @DomSchu 8 років тому +2

      Canadaguitar Haha, goes to show how important mixing is. Something can sound great on a recording but can be the worst piece of equipment for real world use.

    • @GuitarFreak1901
      @GuitarFreak1901 8 років тому +2

      I bought my cr120 and, for me personally, it's the best amp I've ever owned. I'm a big fan of stoner and sludge metal, and I'm a total fuzz head, so I absolutely adore the tone it has. (it's also amazing for shoegaze and stuff like My Bloody Valentine). This might sound like blasphemy, but I actually sold my 6505+ once I got the orange because I didn't like it's tone as much for what I do. Yours must have been a dud, considering your reliability problems, and I'm not sure whether or not it's tone was effected by your issues. Everything is subjective though, and what works for you wouldn't work for me

    • @DomSchu
      @DomSchu 8 років тому

      GuitarFreak1901 Yeah, different strokes for different folks. 6505s are not knows for being good at anything besides tight metal. Mesa Rectifiers are actually really good at sludgy metal stuff. But if you're happy with your CR120 then no need to change it. I kinda wish I could be satisfied with a solid state amp. They always just sound so sterile and hollow to me. Modeling amps are a little better and I like practicing at low volumes with them, but they never get the feel right.

    • @GuitarFreak1901
      @GuitarFreak1901 8 років тому

      +DomSchu I've never played a modeling amp that I didn't hate. If I were to upgrade my cr120, I'd want an Orange or100 or a sunn model T- both of which are pretty darn expensive, and I'm currently maxing minimum wage haha. I'm very satisfied with my rig though

      I have owned BOTH the Randall Century 200ii and the RG3003.... In fact I am the guy who sold Fluff this Century 200ii amp. Both amps are great....One is not better than the other. They are different and therefore I used them for different music.
      Here is a break down on some of their differences.... and mind u this is just my opinion. please don't get upset if u don't agree on the tone differences between the RG3003 and the Century. Its all subjective. Find what makes u happy. FYI.. I'm a former (20+ yrs) sound engineer. Also .. I was born in 67' and I've been playin Metal guitar since 1980.... First song I learned wrong .. Smoke on the water, first song I learned right, "Crazy Train" . . . lols.

      Tone / EQ:
      The Red channel on the Century has very little low end. So you'll need an eq added to the fx loop. Which is why George Lynch added Furman PQ-3's to his Randall amps in his touring rigs. Which also may explain where Dime got the idea to add the PQ-3's to his rigs.
      The RG3003 has much better low end via a low boost sw. and mid scoop sw., but the 3 channels all share the same eq... which is very limiting tone-wise.
      Distortion:
      The Century 200ii has more fizz to the distortion... which, with some careful eq'ing ( I used a Furman PQ-3 in the fx loop like Lynch / Dime did) it will sound awesome. Lots of rich upper harmonics in the distortion. The thing people need to remember is when u set up and eq an amp for distortion / tone, you need to do it so it sounds good in a mix. AND when you do that, if you then play that amp by itself, it may not sound so good. Fluff is doing it correctly... Listen to his Randall when its in a mix... its sounds heavy and very distorted... but all by ltself it doesn't sound so good.. In fact I honestly cannot believe he got such an amazing tone out of that amp... and hell, I owned it.
      But if you normally play/practice without music then by all means eq it so it sounds good by itself. The Century's fizzy-ness when mixed in with a band or music actually gives it a more realistic tube type distortion sound... which is needed with old solid state gear.
      The 1991 Century 200ii actually has a little more gain/distortion than the newer 2015 RG3003 ! Which really surprised me. In fact I was amazed at how much distortion the Century had. I used to run the Century 200ii and the newer RG3003 simultaneously to compare them. Because the Century's distortion is a bit more fuzzy sounding it psychologically tricks you into thinking there's more distortion. Great for Van Halen or Loudness's Akira Takasaki tones.
      The RG3003's distortion is smoother sounding. The RG3003's distortion is not as harmonically "rich" as the Century but it has a "density" and tight-ness that is great for modern hi-gain music. Think Kill Switch or All That Remains. So it sounds better for modern hi-gain stuff than the "more" distorted Century... go figure.

      Versatility:
      The RG3003 has 3 channels which all share the eq... which is very limiting tone-wise. I never used the clean "green" channel... why would I? I'm not in a country band. Metal mutha fucka..And the "red" and "Blue" channels were 99% identicle as far as tone and distortion. So the shared eq thing was pretty limiting tone-wise. I used to run the red ch distortion at 2 and the blue ch at 9.
      The Century was actually more versatile tone-wise. Because the Century had separate eq's for each channel. By carefully eq'ing the Green channel I could get a pretty good JCM800 tone and then use the red channel for leads.
      So, there u go... 2 diffrent amps. 2 different tones. Both have pluses and minuses. Use whatever fits your musical tastes. I used about 10 different amps... 1) because I can afford to and 2) because I have very diverse musical tastes.... Now I own a Kemper..... LOLsss ... which means I have sold off 4 of my amps. I am keeping the 6 tube amps I built though ! Take care.

    I was confused by the title, this video is for the Century 200 Mark 2, not the original Century 200 which is the Randall monster that Dimebag used. I would really like to see him demo. Century 200's are extremely rare to find but there is one for sale on reverb now. Only one for sale I could find anywhere, if I had the cash I would grab it.

    • @terminalvelocity4858
      @terminalvelocity4858 6 років тому

      @@liljuanito123 The Century 200 is a different circuit and as for sound, as expected, is different that the 200II. The 200 is more raw and in your face while the 200II is smoother, it's not bad but I would take the Century 200 over ANY SS amp, any day. If you've played one in person, you will understand. As for the Century 170, NO, don't be mislead by the name...not even the same league as the 200, at all!! In fact it's actually the same circuit as the RG170ES, and that amp is a turd, I owned the head and 112 combo. Nothing like the 200. Sold mine last year for 100 bucks. The truth is people are selling shitty amps at LARGELY inflated prices labeling them as "Dimebag/Pantera" gear just to get that extra buck out of his name to an unsuspecting person who doesn't know what they are looking at. Don't be fooled. If you are in the market for ANY old Randall SS amp, the ONLY two you should be after is the RG100ES or Century 200, those are the holy grails and best sounding out of the entire Randall SS line, period. On another note, if you are on Facebook, you should join a group called "The Dimebag Sound" and ask your questions there. Great group of very knowledgeable people who have first hand experience with just about anything Randall. If you need technical proof of what I've said here, you should contact Randall regarding your questions on circuitry or find schematics online, they are available.
