I've had a Hypertherm 1000 plasma cutter for 5 or 6 years and use it often. It's a very nice machine. I've cut steel shapes using plywood forms but for some reason never thought of using painters tape. It's true, your never too old to learn a new tip or trick. Thanks.

@stillbashingmetal for cutting, a silver pencil works pretty well for me. I also wear bifocals and use a 2.00 magnifier while looking thru the tops of my bifocals. getting old sux sometimes but as they say..."its a privilege denied to many"
A good set of nozzles. My friend is using a Teflon washer to move a torch smoothly along a steel surface. It does not last long but helps to go straight or make curves without stick-and-slip of the torch.
I have the Spectrum 375. Been using it at 115V-20a up to 1/4" It's been very useful. I recently had 220V-20a circuit installed for a lathe so can't wait to try the plasma with the higher voltage.
Great demo, perfection doesn't allways mean a straight or ture line! Another reason for cutting the weld prep from the lower edge is that you have less tendency of contact to the metal with the contact tip due to the approach angle and maintaining your cut heigth , as in top side cutting:) Keith

It uses either compressed air or some inert gas typically. The gas is pushed out at a high speed, and where it is pushed out there are a set of electrodes that run a current through the gas, forming plasma. Hope this helps!
I cut with an Everlast plasma cutter and use a shade 5 or sometimes lighter depending on the ambient light conditions. I use a standoff when cutting which keeps the tip slightly off of the material. You can also get drag tips which have channels which direct plasma out to the sides when starting a cut but I haven't used those myself.

A very nice machine Jody but the only thing that puts me off is the cost of the consumables. I bought a Cut 50 on eBay three years ago very cheaply and it has worked hard and without fault since. It handles half inch steel easily and to me that is as thick as I would ever cut. I buy my consumables by the bulk lot from China direct and have no complaints about them either. Perhaps you might run a comparison test sometime with a view to cost and performance.
@stillbashingmetal Uni POSCA pens seem to work pretty well. they have a very opaque paint based ink that is very luminous and doesnt contaminate anything. One of the better upsides of using these is the paint is Waterbased and non-toxic

In Russia do not sell cutters from Miller, but sell cutters from Telwin (Italy) My plasma cutter "Telwin 54К" has a built-in compressor (it is very convenient). But, the torch cutter is not as convenient as for your Miller.
i really need a plasma cutter... dunno if i could fork out the cash for a miller, might have to look into longevity... have their 200amp AC/DC tig, pretty impressed for the price point.
Useful bit of kit and a good demo.As my eyes get older, I have trouble seeing exactly where I'm cutting or TIG welding...i tend to wander off the weld line. Does anyone know of a high visibility marker type pen that's good for highlighting the desired welding/cutting line? Could be purpose sold item or just something that you've found works for you. I am wondering how you managed the inside of the 'd' and 'g' and 'o's, etc. When you cut, you cut out the whole letter, but on your finished sign you have the inner piece each letter back in place.

Hi Jody, In my experience with plasma cutting, i have always been told to use only a non-conductive straight edge whilst cutting. I think it must have something to do with Continuity of the weld current passing through the straight edge and possibly shorting something out??

I'm using it to build a pole barn and the saddles I've been cutting into the top of the poles with my gas torch... well, suck! If you want a angle cut can you go at a 35degree angle/bevel from the start or do you always have be perpendicular to the sheet of metal when using a plasma cutter?

when it comes to thicker metal i would just use an oxy ace torch. when your skilled enough you can cut with little to no slag. i mean where you can file it vs use a grinder. just my 2 cents.
I use my powerplasma on anything 1 inch and thinner. The oxy ace torch does seem to do better on the thicker stuff but maybe that is because I only have a 60a plasma cutter.
The bad part is so many people think they are getting Miller quality from knock offs don't get me wrong they are some nice clones but most don't last 1 year
I would like a pasma cutter to do art like I have seen with gfarden shovels, wheelbarrows etc. What cutter would you recommend? I dont want a "hobby" version - meaning I would out grow it right away but I dont need to cut 2" steal either.

Ya, i was having a TOTALLY bad day when i typed that...hope you will forgive my slander... Fried through like 3 tips and electrodes, compressor was taking in humid air filling me moisture cup, someone ran over my 200 dollar 8 guage cord, and on and on....

they make "cheater lenses" which are clear plastic inserts that magnify the vision.

spectrum 375 and 875 have 50/60Hz for some reason 625 is not very clear?

tinkergene Between 40,000 and 60,000°F, can go up to 80,000. The surface of the sun is 10,000°F. So, pretty damn hot!
