  • Another Twa Togs Adventure this time to the Old and new Dalquharran castle in Ayrshire. Two amazing castle ruins, one built in the 1470's and the other in 1790 and owned by the Kennedy family.

      It's a cracking bit of architecture Arlene, it's a real shame as to how it's been left to crumble. Maybe one day you'll get the chance to see some of these places for yourself. 😁 👍

    Just done a night visit to this and it was too creepy but we'll go back and I'll have a good knowledge of the history thanks to you. Cheers lads, from a Motherwell boy. (noticed ye left from Hamilton on the map)

      Thanks Davey, your nice comment is very genuinely appreciated by both Jim and I. 😁 Dalquharran is a special place with amazing history. I'm the Motherwell lad (New Stevenston) and Jim, my cousin, lives in Hamilton. We left from his house that day, hence the leaving from Hamilton. 😁 👍 Glad we were of some help. Thanks again for your kind comment. 😁

      @@thetwatogs I didn’t know this was a Kennedy castle, I believe the Scottish Kennedy’s to be part of my ancestry so is of interest, I would love to know where the family grave is located near the castle so I can visit next time I’m up there

      I was just saying to Jim (the other Twa Tog) I wondered if you could be related to the Ayrshire Kennedy's?
      The graves are literally a 3 minute walk from the old Dalquharran Castle. Sadly, as you probably saw in our film? The graves are unkept and in a seriously condition. We hope you get to visit these amazing castles one day soon.
      We do have plans to make another adventure, later in the year, to Greenan Castle, near Ayr, which also has a has a link to your ancestors. Keep your eye on our channel for that one. All the best David! The Twa Togs. 😁 👍

      David, ( Jim here) When Ian and I did this filming last year, we did go to the graveyard and to be honest we did take pictures and a small video, most of the grave stones were damaged and the ones that had not been the writings on them had been covered in moss and other organisms, that’s why we only posted the one image of the Kennedy graveyard, if I can find the other images I took, I will let you know on here and if you want I can send them to you?
      Thanks again for you comments David and your interest in the Scottish Kennedy family ( the wealthy ones ) 😉 😉

    I visit this place a lot it’s always funny the way people try to pronounce it that’s not local the chap was right in the video it’s dal whurran the last kennedy laird John Campbell kennedy died in November 1934 the estate was sold in 1935 these Kennedy’s were a different branch of the family than the Kennedys that owned culzean castle when the new dalquharran was built it wasn’t as big the side wings were added on and completed in 1882

      @thetwatogs  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Michael, thanks for your comment. At the time we made this film, Dalquharran Estate was privately owned and up for sale for around £800.000. It's a shame Dalquharran, like so many other historical buildings we have visited like Dunmore Park House, are left to ruin.
      Not too sure what the state of play is currently with the sale of this amazing place though. 😁 👍

      @@thetwatogs I don’t have a website no. All the information I have collected over the past 3 years is just all for my own personal interest of the both castles and of course the Kennedy family . The extension to the building was costly and the castle and the estate was rented out as a shooting and fishing estate I myself call the new building a castle but it’s actually a country mansion built in a castle style the old castle obviously being medieval. The top of the drum tower at the back of the building the front obviously being the side at the forecourt and stables had a library at the top and a drawing room at the bottom plus a new library dining room and bedrooms were added in to the new extension . The stables are of a later date and not Robert Adams design there is a good few buildings been demolished over the years around the stable area.. I would of loved to have seen the place back in the day in all its glory there has been plans for years now from numerous companies to restore the place but tbh I don’t think it will ever happen but in my opinion the place wouldn’t be the same I think maybe the stone shell is to far gone now it’s a category A listed building anyway

    • @thetwatogs
      @thetwatogs  3 роки тому +1

      @@johnjamieson1758 thanks again John for this in-depth information, and country mansion is more fitting to these types of buildings, it’s great you’ve taken the time to delve more into the history of these buildings, I would have guessed that the new building was The original Robert Adams design ( just goes to show how clever the new blends in with the original building design) as for the stables & buildings long gone, like you, I would have loved to have seen these while still being inhabited ( that would be a sight to be hold) it saddens me to see these buildings neglected, vandalised and allowing nature to take hold, I wish this could be purchased and lived in again, I suppose John we can but dream eh!
