I used kali when it was called backtrack 4 ^^ It is truly my favorite OS. I also love Parrot OS, i use it whenever i need to use my WIFI adapter and i don't want to redo the driver installs with some headaches. But Kali is my all time favorite at age 14 i asked my mom to do the OSCP, but of course i did not knew what i was asking. Back when it was called Backtrack 5 it was only 1k for a permanent cert. On the bright side if my mom said yes i would lose the exam for sure XD so at least know we have guys like Daniel so we can prepare.
Right on! I remember the Backtrack days too! I remember thinking, "this will make me a 1337 h@x0r, it's got ALL the hacker tools!" Then I realized, "Oh yeah, now I need to learn how to USE all those tools 😅", and I'm still working on learning all those tools to this day 😆

Agreed! When I started out learning Linux I was really grateful for RedHat, Mandrake, and Knoppix which made it possible for me to get things figured out a bit before I started learning how to be more of a power user. The same was true for cybersec. Backtrack helped me become aware of hacking tools, which made me aware of techniques, which I could then research and test. It won't be long before you're building custom scripts to roll out on top of a fresh install of your favorite mainstream Linux distro while working your Pentesting|SOC job at Fortune-500 company and we can all say, "We knew her when..." 😃👍
As a distro jumper, I appreciate your video and overview of these pentesting distros. I'll be trying out Predator-OS shortly! Nonethess, I look forward to your upcoming videos on these distros--especially with BlackArchLinux and its *fun* post-install attempts in updating/upgrading :/ (but adding the BlackArch repo on top of another Arch has worked flawlessly).
I just switched to Parrot for my daily driver as well, they absolutely killed it with the latest iteration. I'm a pretty big distro jumper myself but for whatever reason i'm really feeling the Parrot sec. distro and its been almost 3 months now, which for me is quite long. Love your vids man, keep on keepin on!
The best advise someone give me when I started was use good old debian. As you need tools install them, you will cry you will say screw it, you will break your VM but that is how you learn

Parrot OS is so good that i have changed my main os to Parrot OS Home (without all the pentest stuff) and i use Parrot OS Security for Cybersec things and it's blazingly fast and stable . For my experience is the best Linux distro .

Very interested to see how blackbuntu holds up considering the support ubuntu already has. Predator I'm going to give a shot. I avoid blackarch now also because of problems. And I had thought backbox was supposed to be ubuntu with the tools installed. If blackbuntu holds up, probably don't need backbox. I would love to like kali but I have lost too much time and given it too many chances.
To be clear: If I run an OS I want to run the full OS. I have had too many problems running the full Kali and it's the same issue with full Blackarck. When there is that much code involved conflicts start to happen and suddenly to can't update upgrade. I have often thought it would be much better to just have the blackarch or kali ecosystem running from one usb and then have a separate USB where each tools runs from a separate folder so that to can just keep adding more tools/folders and code would never conflict because each tools runs from a designated folder. Even if you need the same or different versions of python or golang installed in multiple folders...that's still better to me than getting to a point over months and then having to compl9start over.
Predator definitely has the "Cool" factor, so I want to spend more time with it as my daily, but Parrot has been giving me a mostly trouble-free experience 😁👍
Python can get jacked up pretty good for sure. Check out Conda ( conda.io/projects/conda/en/latest/index.html) or maybe docker containers are the best way to go?
I"ve really taken to Parrot OS recently. I was hoping that Predator was going to be a great experience, but there are some quirky things about it that keeps me from going for it. Same with Blackbuntu, but I really need to spend more time with Blackbuntu before making my final decision about it.
If you have been using Linux for 25 years, Arch is not really difficult to understand and install. It may not be a distribution for absolute beginners, but in the end you really get to know Linux. Still, you don't have to use it and with Kali or Parrot you have everything you need.
I honestly don't have any experience with Fedora Security Lab. I haven't used anything similar to RedHat since CentOS was a thing, but maybe it's time to take FSL for a test drive. Thanks for the suggestion!
Whonix can be run as a VM or on bare metal. I would highly suggest reading the Whonix documentation before deploying in your production environment. www.whonix.org/wiki/Documentation I hope that helps

i run arch with blackarch repos i tested arch 3 days and i killed my windows since this day a use arch every day and i love it so much (at some parts its a bit annoying.... but okay, i have time too learn it :D)

I used to be a slackware user back in the day, but nowadays I find that I just want stuff to work out of the box so that I can just get on with whatever I need/want to do. I just ain't got no time to be configuring and tuning the OS all the time. :)
That's a tall order, but I'd start with the security basics. I'd also learn about the different systems that you might be hacking on as well as how they utilize networking. From there you start learning about vulnerabilities and exploits for those systems. You start picking up how to use hacking tools and probably building your own. But it all starts with learning about the security flaws in a given system, how to find them, and then how they're exploited. I know that is a VERY SHORT answer, but this question is not easily answered in a comment box :) Grab a book like the "Web Application Hacker's Handbook" and "The Hacker's Playbook" series. That should definitely get you going. I hope that helps. Cheers!
Luckily I learned linux before learning how to hack so I don't have to use kali linux as my only option, I love kali. the simplicity, the arrangement for tools, super easy to navigate it won't take much of your time configuring it, but I'm so used to tiling window manager( sway and i3) I can't install i3 on top of xfce ot for some reason though.
Predator os I don't like it and it seems like a trap for example it detects if it's in a vm and stops certain bits from. Running and it boots any desk and a few other sus programs on boot up and there's so much just lumped in together the terminals practically useless hardly anything works
So, I'm still not sure if you like Kali best?🤔 😁🤣In all seriousness, I found myself running back to Kali just the other day because it was the easiest way to get something done quickly and without needing to fix a bunch of broken things. Let me restate that. It was the quickest way to get something done without having to fix as many broken things, and the broken things were easier fixes. 👍

They all have their Pros and Cons. Kali and Parrot are mature platforms with widespread adoption. The others might just be lesser known or newer or both, but have some serious strengths. Thanks to virtualization we get test-drive them all 💯
@daniellowrie1024 I helped testing Athena and can say that BA actually got better because of Athena dev constantly submitting bug reports over to them on their Repro. I'm also going to try to do the PNPT on Athena as it's that good that I feel it's a good platform to do certification exams

It can definitely be frustrating when tools don't work. That seems to be something that I've experienced with most distros though. As for Metasploit, you gotta learn how to modify it so that it's payloads don't get busted. It's a FREE open-source tool, so you have to expect it to be signatured by most (if not all) defensive solutions.
@@daniellowrie a lot of people skip the fundamentals and try to go straight to penetration testing. If you don’t know a lot about linux and programming, you cant really do much useful stuff in offensive security. This comment is a perfect encapsulation of that

Which I used parrot for the longest bit might experiment with black arch but went back for kali for now
I used parrot basically all of last year. I like I, but somehow I'm back to Kali as well.

Parrot is just reliable and my go to distro. However Arch and some of the others going to test out moving forward.
I'm really enjoying Parrot right now. I think it may be due to the recent updates and refinements coupled with a bit of "Kali Fatigue" 😅.

It runs very well! Super speedy in my VMs and I'm about to slap it on a RasPi 4, Zero 2W and an old Dell laptop I've got laying around.

CSI Linux is super cool, but I was under the impression that it was geared more for DFIR and not Pentesting. I could easily be wrong about that though. If it is, maybe I should do a video about more BlueTeam/DFIR focused distros?

They all have their Pros and Cons. Kali and Parrot are mature platforms with widespread adoption. The others might just be lesser known or newer or both, but have some serious strengths. Thanks to virtualization we get test-drive them all 💯
Cant install wifi drivers on Parrot os. Very sad

There were actually a handful of other distros like AthenaOS, Pentoo, and ArchStrike that I just didn't have time to address. Sorry. 😥
@daniellowrie1024 I helped testing Athena and can say that BA actually got better because of Athena dev constantly submitting bug reports over to them on their Repro. I'm also going to try to do the PNPT on Athena as it's that good that I feel it's a good platform to do certification exams

It can definitely be frustrating when tools don't work. That seems to be something that I've experienced with most distros though. As for Metasploit, you gotta learn how to modify it so that it's payloads don't get busted. It's a FREE open-source tool, so you have to expect it to be signatured by most (if not all) defensive solutions.
@@daniellowrie a lot of people skip the fundamentals and try to go straight to penetration testing. If you don’t know a lot about linux and programming, you cant really do much useful stuff in offensive security. This comment is a perfect encapsulation of that
