Hickory King for the win. We also do Roy's Calais 'cause it's so darned quick (about 85 days to dried harvest here) we can get 2 crops in. Main crop in Spring. Follows behind our early Potatoes harvested in July. Plant a second crop then and there in the 'Tater beds to be harvested in Oct. Hickory King (our favorite) take the whole darned season here.
So cool! This is my first time to grow field corn and I’m trying glass gem corn this year. But I’ve got it in my notes for next year to grow Jimmy red. Now I’ve got to go antique shopping and find me one of those gadgets😉
Love your videos! Always so informative and well done. So inspired to do this and I’m going to be looking out for one of those shelling devices at the local antique stores! Thanks again 😊
Freezer space gets to be a problem. We can all we have time for during the garden year, and try to catch up in the fall and winter. The problem is we add meat to the process. We love what we do, and have a very low grocery bill.
Been growing out small plots of Cascade Ruby-Gold (flint) and Magic Manna (flour) field corn varieties in alternate years to increase my seed stock. Hubby likes to grow a hybrid sweet corn in the main season, so I start my flint or flour corn in trays inside to get a month's head start on it, and transplant it outside at the time hubby is seeding his sweet corn. That way they don't cross-pollinate, and my field corn is already beginning to dry down while the first planting of sweet corn is just starting to set its ears. It's working out well. (Also, our bees enjoy the extra window of pollen availability.)
Thank you! I'm going to try growing field corn for the first time next year. It's nice to see what to expect and a good video of how to handle the harvest. 👍
My first year doing this corn from Hoss nice video ! My only problem is beetles on my corn any suggestions what to use non chemical pesticides on it . Thanks
I sure would like to see a video on how you make it for your chicken feed I’ve thought of doing that and also thought about it for using to mix in pig feed too! Love y’all’s videos hopefully we can see that one soon!
I was thinking to winnow out the chaft, have a small amount of corn in pail and stick the business end of a leaf blower in pail just above corn and with your hand, stir up corn then chaft will blow out nicely.
what I do if it is a wet year is harvest the corn and shell it then i have a pices of bin flooring with small holes in it and put a fan under it then put the shelled corn on top of it then let it be for a couple day then when i come back couple days latter it ready to grind
I grew bloody butcher in 5a several years back . It was tall beautiful corn. I had two ears per stalk. We had drip tape in the row. I had very little insect pressure. We planted it early spring.
Your winnowing your corn like you do wheat, gosh that corn looks so good probably makes good grits and cornmeal...can't wait to do this next year... thanks for sharing
Greg my jimmy red is tall and coming on 85 days most of the silks are dark brown a few late bloomers are green silks but when do you stop watering I’m in New Mexico and first frost is october 15 worried about the time to get it dried out. We have never grown dent corn always done sweet corn . Keep up the good work love your products and seeds god bless you and miss hoss.
Last year I bought some hickory king form ya and planted about a half acre as a test/seed plot. It did great to spite a wet spring and DRY summer. It ground into some of the best whole ear steer feed we have ever made. The cattle went to it over commercial yellow corn feed every time, it even improved their coat. I'd like to step up to about 6 acres this year. But my question is, can the long skinny cobs stand up to a new idea picker? We just hand picked the small plot last year.
Thank you for this informative content Mr. Greg , That really is some beautiful corn for Grits & Cornmeal , I watched you & Mrs Sheila the other day & she just wanted to shell that corn right during the show lol. I appreciate all your great informative content . Can't wait to order my bulbing onions coming up soon . God bless you all Mrs Josette Montgomery County, Texas 🙏
Your question is hard to answer. My soil and your soil are not the same. Nutrient load is different, Cation exchange value is different. You will need to fertilize according to your soil and the crop your growing.
I finally got a rototiller so I'm going to give corn a proper try. I tried it a bit last year but it came up very small, like 4 feet tall, I think due to overcrowding and not fertilizing. But I did get some cute little ears. Do you keep spraying the corn for pests until harvest when you let it dry like this?
I live in east Tennessee. I don't know when I need to order my walla onions. And I need to put out strawberries . When I put them out .I'm new at this I done pretty good on my garden .which it was my first but next spring I want to start out better.so if you could help me when the best time to put them out for I can get a chance to have them. I have my other seeds put up for my corn beans etc. thank you
You will need to have your onion transplants and Strawberries ready to plant mid October. Below are 2 growing guides that may help you. hosstools.com/strawberry-growing-guide/ hosstools.com/onion-growing-guide/
The kernels of field corn are darker yellow and are larger than kernels of sweet corn. Field Corn kernels have a dimple. That dimple is also called a dent, and field corn is often also called “dent corn.”
So corn needs a lot of fertilizer, how much is a lot? As a potato farmer my idea of a lot is probably two or three times what the average home gardener would think. For my spring chip potatoes grown in Florida it was 300-180-300 lbs per acre of N-P-K.
Yes, I was aware that CORN today is genetically modified, which is why I stopped eating corn. But then I learned that the seeds for home growers was NOT genetically modified. So what is the TRUTH? When I saw your sheller, I immediately thought of the song - JIMMY CRACKED CORN.....GREAT VIDEO!!!!
Correct seeds for home growers are not. There are currently no genetically modified garden seeds available for sale to the general public. Most of the products you buy with processed corn are made with genetically modified corn.

With the price of deer corn going to $12 a bag, I think I am about to use your techniques next spring to help with my supplies. Thanks for the video

Beautiful corn!✌🏻

Enjoyed this video, thanks for the info!

I look forward to the next one in the series.
What do you do with the corn husks? Will you be showing how to make animal feed?
Gracias😊
Yes and yes
Do you have a video on fall tomatoes
not yet but good idea

Great video sir. I sure do wish Pointer Bibs were still made. I have one pair left. Sure do enjoy your videos. Thank you sir.

Hi , can frozen corn still germinate ? Do you store the Corn seeds for next year differently?
Thanks for your videos they are great!
Yes, absolutely
Curious why you chose to quantify the fertilizer requirement as "keeping it well fed" . Are you willing to say how much fertilizer you use? Thanks!
Your question is hard to answer. My soil and your soil are not the same. Nutrient load is different, Cation exchange value is different.

Quick question, isn’t shelled dried corn like that basically seed? so you could you plant it the next year if you wanted too?
yes
An old hippy passed away and I was gifted his seed corn collection. The problem is it is not labeled. How can I tell sweet corn from field corn seeds?
The kernels of field corn are darker yellow and are larger than kernels of sweet corn. Field Corn kernels have a dimple. That dimple is also called a dent, and field corn is often also called “dent corn.”
Is there any way to reduce weevils and corn worms?
Use of pyrethroid and Bug Buster II
NICE🔥
If you don't have room in your freezer do you suppose adding food grade DE to your grain would deter insects?
You could, but not a preferred method
@@gardeningwithhossThanks. That's good cause my freezer is full and deer season is just around the corner.
