I think you will find that those pulley wheels were a part of the flat rod (cable) system which transferred power to pumps in the shaft. Usually there is a wheel pit for a water wheel outside. There is a a similar set up in Wheal Benny (Tamar Valley). Similar set ups are found in mines in Mid Wales.. Probably the shaft is below the run in where the iron item you found.

I'm seriously jealous. I have seen many of your adventures where you actually take your mum along to enjoy the adventure with you. I find that very cool. I am also close with my parents and would love to have my mum or dad come with me on some of my wacky outings as well. This is why it is so important for parents to have kids when they are younger. This way as the kids get older the parents are still young enough and active enough to participate with them. StreetZips is a class case example. All the best.
